Ultrafine Fraction and Aerosol Attached Activity Size Distribution of Radon Progeny in Living Room

Inhalation of 222Rn progeny in the domestic environment contributes the greatest fraction of the natural radiation exposure to the public. The ultrafine activity of these progeny amounts up to about l 0 percent of the total activity （attached and ultrafine）, but is considered to yield about 50 percent of the total radiation dose. Therefore, measurements of ultrafine fraction are essential for the estimation of radiation dose. The current study presents measured data on the total equilibrium equivalent concentration （EEC） and ultrafine equilibrium equivalent concentration （EECUn）, ultrafine fraction （fb）, attached and unattached activity size distributions of radon progeny in the low ventilated rooms at Minia University, Minia city, Egypt. A screen diffusion battery was used for collection the ultrafine fraction and measuring the total activity concentration of radon progeny. The attached activity size distribution of 214pb is determined by using a low pressure cascade impactor. The EEC of radon progeny varied between 1.3 and 18.9 Bq/m3 with a mean value of 5.2 ± 0.48 Bq/m2. The mean activity thermodynamic diameter （AMTD） ofultrafine of radon progeny was determined to be 1.26 nm with relative mean geometric standard deviations （GSD） of 1.3. The ultrafine fraction of radon progeny, fb, has a range 0.01 to 0.21 with an average of 0.08 ± 0.03. A relative mean GSD of 2.7 was determined for attached 2Lapb at a mean active median aerodynamic diameter （AMD） of 350 nm. Based on the above experimental results, the deposition fractions have been evaluated in each air way generation through the human lung by applying a lung deposition model. The bronchial deposition efficiencies of particles in the size range of attached radon progeny were found to be lower than those of ultrafine progeny. The effect of radon progeny deposition by adult male has been also studied for various levels of physical exertion. The dose conversion factor has been discussed as a function of fb.

Urinary Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) as a Novel Mark.r for Early Prediction of Esophageal Varices in Patients with Chronic Liver Disease

Back.round/Aims: Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) has a crucial role in portal hypertension and collateral vessels formation. This study aims to assess urinary VEGF in cirrhotic patients as a predictor of presence of esophageal varices, and variceal bleeding. Settings and Design: 42 cirrhotic patients were randomly selected and classified into 2 groups according to the presence of variceal bleeding. Methods and Material: Urinary VEGF was measured and corrected against urinary creatinine. Platelet count, liver functions, abdominal ultrasonography and upper endoscopy were done. Statistical Analysis Used: Comparison was done by Mann Whitney and k.usk.l Wallis tests. Correlation was done using Spearman rank.correlation. Multivariable logistic regression was done to identify predictors of variceal bleeding and presence of large varices. Receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC) analysis was used to determine the optimum cut off value of predictors. Results and Conclusions: Urinary VEGF was lower in cirrhotic patients with esophageal varices than those without. Low VEGF, low platelet count and splenomegaly were found to be independent predictors of both the presence of large esophageal varices, and variceal bleeding. Cut-off values for platelet count ≤ 166.3 × 103/μL, and corrected VEGF ≤ 59.12 pg/mg were predictive of large esophageal varices with 93.1%, 86.2% sensitivity and 74.5%, 58.2% specificity respectively. While variceal bleeding could be predicted at a platelet count ≤ 153 × 103/μL, and corrected VEGF ≤ 45.08 pg/mg with 90.9%, 81.8% sensitivity and 72.6%, 59.7% specificity respectively. The study concludes that urinary VEGF can be used as an alternative to upper endoscopic screening.

Influence of Plastic Deformation and Aging Process on Microstructure and Tensile Properties of Cast Ti-6Al-2Sn-2Zr-2Mo-1.5Cr-2Nb-0.1Si Alloy

In the present work. titanium alloy with a composition of Ti-6.5Al-3Mo-1.9Nb-2.2Sn-2.2Zr-1.5Cr (TC21) was subjected to plastic deformation and aging processes. A Plastic deformation at room temperature with 2%, 3% and 4% strok. strain was applied on the studied samples. Then, the samples aged at 575°C for 4 hr. By applying different plastic deformation ratios, the structure revealed an elongated and thin β-phase embedded in an α-phase. Secondary α-platelets were precipitated in the residual β-phase. Maximum hardness (HV440) was obtained for 4% deformed + aged samples. Minimum hardness (HV320) was recorded for the as-cast samples without deformation. The highest ultimate tensile strength of 1311 MPa was obtained for 4% deformed + aged samples due to presence of high amount of dislocation density as well as precipitation of secondary α-platelets in the residual β-phase. The lowest ultimate tensile strength of 1020 MPa was reported for as-cast samples. Maximum elongation of 14% was registered for 4% deformed + aged samples and minimum one of 3% was obtained for as-cast samples. Hence, strain hardening + aging can enhance considerably the elongation of TC21 Ti-alloy up to 366% and 133% in case of applying 4% deformation + aged compared to as-cast and aged samples without applying plastic deformation, respectively.

Angiogenic and FLT3 Receptors Expression in Acute Lymphoblastic Leuk.mia in Pediatric Age Group

Angiogenesis has an important role in pathophysiology of cancer. FMS-lik. tyrosine k.nase 3 (FLT3) is implicated in hematopoietic malignancies. Their role in childhood acute lymphoblastic leuk.mia (ALL) pathogenesis needs more enlightenment. Expression of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 and -2 (VEGFR-1 and -2), as well as FLT3 were assessed by flow cytometry in bone marrow (BM) blasts of 55 newly diagnosed children with ALL. Patients included B cell ALL (B-ALL) group (n = 41) and T cell ALL (T-ALL) group (n = 14). Comparison between groups revealed a significant increase in blasts percent (%) expressing FLT3 and FLT3 intensity detected in B-ALL group (p = 0.004 and p = 0.02, respectively). In B-ALL patients, a significant positive correlation was seen between blasts % expressing FLT3 and blasts percentage infiltrating BM (r = 0.405;p = 0.009), also positive correlation was seen between % of blasts expressing VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2 (r = 0.704;p 0.001). In T-ALL group, blast % expressing FLT3 revealed significant positive correlations with blast % expressing VEGFR-1, and those expressing VEGFR-2 (r = 0.627;p = 0.016, and r = 0.654;p = 0.011, respectively). In addition, significant correlation was seen in blasts % expressing all;FLT3, VEGFR-1 and -2, with blasts % expressing stem cell mark.r CD34 (r = 0.826;p = 0.001, r = 0.596;p = 0.041, and r = 0.798;p = 0.002, respectively). Conclusion: Expression of VEGFR-1, VEGFR-2 and FLT3 were demonstrated and link.d on leuk.mic blasts of ALL which highlights their role in pathogenesis. FLT3 expression plays a role in facilitating blasts proliferation in BM in B-ALL. FLT3, VEGFR-1 and -2 could be used in future profiling of CD34+ leuk.mic stem cell pool in T-ALL.

Utility of 2-Methyl-quinazolin-4(3H)-one in the Synthesis of Heterocyclic Compounds with Anticancer Activity

Quinolino[2,1-b]quinazolines 3 and 4, pyrrolo[2,1-b]quinazoline 5 and various substituted 2-(4-chlorostyryl)quinazoline derivatives including: 4-amino derivative 8, 4-hydrazino derivative 9, thiourea derivative 10, thiosemicarbazide derivative 19, 4-benzylidene hydrazinyl derivative 21, 4-amino thiazolidene derivatives 11, 12, 13, 22, imidazoquinazolines 15, 16, quinazolinium chloride 14, triazino[4,3-c]quinazolines 17, 18, tetrazino[1,6-c]quinazoline 20, 4-amino azetidinyl derivative 23, triazolo[4,3-c]quinazoline 24, 4-amino substituted quinazolines 25, 26, 27, 29 and quinazolino quinazoline 28 were synthesized through different chemical reactions. The obtained compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antitumor activity against HEPG2 and MCF-7 cell lines compared to the reference drug (doxorubicin). Compounds 18, 19, 20, 23 and 24 were found to be the most active against both cell lines exhibiting IC50 values ranging from 10.82 - 29.46 μM/L and 7.09 - 31.85 μM/L against Hep-G2 and MCF-7 cell lines, respectively, in addition to dock.ng study of these five compounds against thymidylate synthase and dihydrofolate reductase enzymes active sites.

Prevalence of occult hepatitis C in egyptian patients with non alcoholic fatty liver disease

This study aim is to assess the prevalence of occult HCV infection among Egyptian patients with non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with elevated AST and ALT, and to correlate presence of occult HCV with severity of liver disease. Patients and Methods: After informed consent 27 patients with elevateed liver enzymes diagnosed as NAFLD were examined for demographic, clinical, laboratory data and Ultrasonography. Liver biopsy was done and tested for HCV RNA in tissue. Genotyping using RFLP analysis of PCR products in the 5’NCR was done for positive cases. Results: HCV RNA in tissue was positive in 11/27 patients (40.7%);genotype was 4a in all positive cases. AST and ALT values showed significantly lower values in occult HCV than the non HCV NAFLD group. Liver biopsy of studied patients showed no significant difference as regard inflammation and fibrosis according to METAVIR score. Conclusions: Occult HCV is highly prevalent among Egyptian NAFLD patients. It seems to induce a mild liver disease. Patients with elevated ALT and negative HCV RNA in sera might be investigated for tissue HCV RNA. Follow up is recommended for the occult HCV patients to monitor progression to overt disease.

Methylprednisolone（MP） is currently the only drug confirmed to exhibit a neuroprotective effect on acute spinal cord injury（SCI）. Vitamin C（VC） is a natural water-soluble antioxidant that exerts neuroprotective effects through eliminating free radical damage to nerve cells. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells（BMMSCs）, as multipotent stem cells, are promising candidates in SCI repair. To evaluate the therapeutic effects of MP, VC and BMMSCs on traumatic SCI, 80 adult male rats were randomly divided into seven groups： control, SCI（SCI induction by weight-drop method）, MP（SCI induction, followed by administration of 30 mg/k. MP via the tail vein, once every other 6 hours, for five times）, VC（SCI induction, followed by intraperitoneal administration of 100 mg/k. VC once a day, for 28 days）, MP ＋ VC（SCI induction, followed by administration of MP and VC as the former）, BMMSCs（SCI induction, followed by injection of 3 × 10~6 BMMSCs at the injury site）, and BMMSCs ＋ VC（SCI induction, followed by BMMSCs injection and VC administration as the former）. Locomotor recovery was assessed using the Basso Mouse Scale. Injured spinal cord tissue was evaluated using hematoxylin-eosin staining and immunohistochemical staining. Expression of transforming growth factor-beta, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and matrix metalloproteinase-2 genes was determined using real-time quantitative PCR. BMMSCs intervention better promoted recovery of nerve function of rats with SCI, mitigated nerve cell damage, and decreased expression of transforming growth factor-beta, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and matrix metalloproteinase-2 genes than MP and/or VC. More importantly, BMMSCs in combination with VC induced more obvious improvements. These results suggest that VC can enhance the neuroprotective effects of BMMSCs against SCI.
