The Role of Serum Trace elements and Oxidative Stress in Egyptian Breast Cancer Patients

Back.round: Oxidative stress is considered to be involved in the pathophysiology of all cancers. Studies indicated that the levels of oxidative stress mark.rs increased in breast cancer. Trace metals are essential to normal human homeostasis. When present in an abnormal expression, they contribute in many pathological processes. Some trace metals are claimed to be carcinogenic and capable of inducing a toxic effect through the formation of free radicles and acting as cofactors in the oxidative damage of biological macromolecules and DNA. Objective: Our aim was to investigate the serum levels of some trace elements (Copper, Zinc and Cadmium), the total oxidative and anti-oxidative capacity (TOC and TAC) in patients with breast cancer in comparison to patients with benign breast tumours. Patients and Methods: The present study included 65 females. The participates were divided into 2 main groups: control group which consisted of 20 apparently healthy female;the patient groups which divided into 3 groups: group B included 15 patients with benign breast tumours, group N consisted of 15 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients and group M included 15 patients with metastatic breast cancer. Results: The mean serum levels of Copper, Zinc, and Cadmium were significantly higher in the three patients groups (B, N and M) than the control group. Similarly, serum uric acid (UA) and (TAC) levels showed significant higher level in both breast cancer groups as compared to the benign group. However TOC levels showed only significantly higher level in metastatic group. Conclusions: The present study suggested elevated TAC, UA and TOC in breast cancer patients. The increased levels of trace elements could lead to formation of free radicals or other reactive oxygen species. The serum profile of these trace metals may be helpful in predicting prognosis of breast cancer.

Training program for caregivers to prevent pressure ulcers among elderly residents at geriatric homes

Objectives:Pressure ulcer(PU)is one of the most common problem among the bedridden elderly and has significantly more burden on elderly and *** study is aimed to evaluate the effects of the training program for caregivers to prevent PUs among elderly residents at geriatric ***:A quasi-experimental design was used to carry out the current study.A purposive sample comprised of all formal(39 nurses)or informal caregivers(39)and all immobilized elderly residents(35)who are found in all geriatric centers in Helwan district.A structured questionnaire was used to assess caregivers’socio-demographic characteristics,k.owledge,attitude,and observational check.ists for their practice for prevention of PU at pre-and posttest and during ***:After the training program,there were improvements in the level of k.owledge,practice,and positive attitude of caregivers about PU prevention with a statistically significant difference between pre-,post-,and follow-up training programs(Pk.owledge,practice,and attitude of the subjects to PU ***,in turn,implies that adequate k.owledge affects directly the elderly caregivers’attitudes as well as practice for prevention could be important in reducing the burden of PU among the ***,conducting a training program for caregivers at different geriatric homes about caring sk.lls for elders can prevent PU,and using spontaneous reposition is very effective to prevent PUs.

Current investigation has shown that human exposure to aflatoxins is not limited to the administration of contaminated cereals,but water is another possible *** study was aimed to design easily applicable method to eliminate aflatoxin B2(AFB2)from contaminated drink.ng *** has been used for preparation of probiotic-coated polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)and cellulose acetate(CA)*** of these hybrid nanofibers were studied by scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR).SEM showed the proper coating of probiotic strains(k.uyveromyces lactis CBS 2359 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 9763)on both nanofiber *** areas(1-5 cm^(2))of the probiotic-nanofiber hybrid were used to enhance the removal of 20 ng/ml of aflatoxin B2(AFB2)from prepared AFB2-contaminated water over *** revealed that a 5 cm^(2) area of probiotic-coated PVA nanofibers can eliminate 97.5% of AFB2 as compared to 87.5%,90.5%,93.5%,and 95.5%,for 1 cm2,2 cm^(2),3 cm^(2),and 4 cm^(2),respectively,while probiotic-coated CA nanofibers were slightly less ***,the cytotoxicity of probiotics-CA treated water on cultured human fibroblasts was almost 10 times lower than the cytotoxicity recorded in probiotics-PVA treated ***,results of the current research suggest that probiotics-polymer nanofiber membranes can be used as an extra stage in the water purification system for the treatment of AFB2-contaminated water.

Synthesis,antimicrobial, antiquorum-sensing and cytotoxic activities of new series of benzothiazole derivatives

New series of benzothiazole derivatives were designed and synthesized. The newly synthesized compounds were screened for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus. Compounds 6j and 6o showed the highest activity against E. coli and S. aureus. The antifungal activity of these compounds was also tested against Candida albicans and Aspergillus fumigatus293. Compounds 4c, 4g and 6j exhibited the highest activity against C. albicans. In addition, compounds4 a and 6j displayed promising activity against A. fumigatus 293. The same compounds were examined for their antiquorum-sensing activity against Chromobacterium violaceum ATCC 12472, whereas compounds4 a, 6j and 6p showed moderate activity. The in vitro cytotoxicity testing of the synthesized compounds was performed against cervical cancer（Hela） and k.dney fibroblast cancer（COS-7） cell lines. Results indicated that all tested compounds have IC50 values 〉50 mmol/L against both cell lines. Molecular properties, toxicities, drug-lik.ness, and drug score profiles of compounds 4a–c, 5a, 6g,h, 6j, 6l, 6o and7 c,d were also assessed.

Functional and anatomical evaluation of the effect of nepafenac in prevention of macular edema after phacoemulsification in diabetic patients

AIM: To evaluate the effect of prophylactic administration of nepafenac in prevention of macular edema occurring in diabetic patients after phacoemulsification and to investigate the correlation between optical coherence tomography(OCT) foveal thick.ess and multifocal electroretinogram(MF-ERG) ***: The study included two groups. Group 1 included 50 diabetic patients with senile cataract(50 eyes, 30 females, 20 males, aged 55±7 y) received nepafenac 0.1% eye drop. Group 2 included another 50 diabetic patients with senile cataract(50 eyes, 22 female, 28 males, aged 53.8±8 y) did not receive nepafenac. All patients were followed up for 3 mo postoperatively. OCT and MF-ERG were done preoperative and at 1 wk. 1, 2 and 3 ***: The mean foveal thick.ess was statistically significantly lower in Group 1. Five eyes in Group 2 developed clinical cystoid macular oedema(CMO)(10%), and no patients in Group 1 developed central macular thick.ning more than 50 μm. There were insignificant differences in MF-ERG amplitudes and latencies between the two groups except in the five eyes that developed CMO, there statistically significant reduction of MF-ERG amplitude with increase in foveal thick.ess. CONCLUSION: Perioperative nepafenac reduces the incidence of CMO following uncomplicated phacoemulsification significantly. Nepafenac has no side effects.
