Assessment of Sea Water Inundation Along Daboo Creek Area in Indus Delta Region, Pakistan

Indus Deltaic Region(IDR) in Pakistan is an erosion vulnerable coast due to the high deep water wave energy. Livelihood of millions of people depends on the fisheries and mangrove forests in IDR. IDR consists of many creeks where Daboo is a major creek located at southeast of the largest city of Pakistan, Karachi. Unfortunately, there has been no detailed study to analyze the damages of sea water intrusion at a large temporal and spatial scale. Therefore, this study is designed to estimate the effects of sea water inundation based on changing sea water surface salinity and sea surface temperature(SST). Sea surface salinity and SST data from two different surveys in Daboo creek during 1986 and 2010 are analyzed to estimate the damages and extent of sea water intrusion. Mean salinity has increased 33.33% whereas mean SST decreased 13.79% from 1987 to 2010. Spatio-temporal analysis of creek area using LANDSAT 5 Thematic mapper(TM) data for the years 1987 and 2010 shows significant amount of erosion at macro scale. Creek area has increased approximately 9.93%(260.86 m^2 per year) which is roughly equal to 60 extensive sized shrimp farms. Further Land Use Land Cover(LULC) analyses for years 2001 and 2014 using LANDSAT 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus(ETM+) has indicated 42.3% decrease in cultivated land. Wet mud flats have spread out at the inner mouth of creek with enormous increase of 123.3%. Significant sea water intrusion has increased the area of barren land by 37.9%. This also resulted in overall decrease of 6.7% in area covered by mangroves. Therefore, this study recorded a significant evidence of sea water intrusion in IDR that has caused serious damages to community living in the area, economical losses. Additionally, it has also changed the environment by reducing creek biological productivity as reported by earlier studies over other regions of the world.

Mixture temperature prediction of waxy oil–water two-phase system flowing near wax appearance temperature

Temperature sensitivity of waxy crude oils makes it difficult to study their flow behaviour in the presence of water especially near their wax appearance temperature(WAT). In this study a method was proposed and implemented to mitigate such difficulties which was applied in predicting mixture temperatures(Tm) of a typical Malaysian waxy crude oil and water flow in a horizontal pipe. To this end, two analytical models were derived firstly from calorimetry equation which based on developed two correlations for defining crude oil heat capacity actualized from the existed specific heat capacities of crude oils. The models were then applied for a set of experiments to reach the defined three predetermined Tm(26 °C, 28 °C and 30 °C). The comparison between the predicted mixture temperatures(Tm,1and Tm,2) from the two models and the experimental results displayed acceptable absolute average errors(0.80%, 0.62%, 0.53% for model 1; 0.74%, 0.54%, 0.52% for model 2). Moreover,the average errors for both models are in the range of standard error limits(±0.75%) according to ASTM ***, the proposed model showed the ease of obtaining mixture temperatures close to WAT as predetermined with accuracy of ± 0.5 °C approximately for over 84% of the examined cases. The method is seen as a practical reference point to further study the flow behaviour of waxy crudes in oil–water two-phase flow system near sensitive temperatures.

In vivo Anticancer Activities of Benzophenone Semicarbazone against Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma Cells in Swiss Albino Mice

Objective Benzophenone semicarbazone(BSC) was synthesized and characterized to identify compounds with anticancer activities. Methods Anticancer activities were studied against Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma(EAC) cells in Swiss albino mice by monitoring parameters such as tumor weight measurement,survival time of tumor bearing mice,tumor cell growth inhibition,and so *** hematological parameters,such as red blood cells,white blood cells,and hemoglobin content,were also measured. Results The results showed that BSC has a positive effect against EAC *** assessment was conducted by comparing these results with those obtained using the standard drug bleomycin. Conclusions The BSC compound can be considered as a potent anticancer agent.

Agricultural production systems are immensely exposed to different environmental stresses in which heavy metal stress receives serious concerns. This study was conducted to explore the deleterious effects of different chromium(Cr) stress levels, i.e., 0, 30, 6090, 120, and 150 μmol L-1, on two maize genotypes, Wandan 13 and Runnong 35. Both genotypes were evaluated by measuring their growth and yield characteristics, Cr accumulation in different plant tissues, alterations in osmolyte accumulation, generation o reactive oxygen species(ROS), and anti-oxidative enzyme activity to scavenge ROS. The results showed that Cr stress decreased the leaf area, cob formation, 100-grain weight, shoot fresh biomass, and yield formation, while Cr accumulation in different maize tissues was found in the order of roots > leaves > stem > seeds in both genotypes. The increased Cr toxicity resulted in higher free proline soluble sugars and total phenolic contents, and lower soluble protein contents. However, enhanced lipid peroxidation was noticed in the forms of malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide(H2O2) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance accumulation, and electrolyte leakage. The hyperactivity of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, especially glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase indicated that these anti-oxidative enzymes had a central role in protecting maize from Cr toxicity, especially for Wandan 13. Moreover, higher uptake and less translocation of Cr contents into the grains of Wandan 13 implied its importance as a potential candidate against soil Cr pollution.

Prediction of breakdown strength of cellulosic insulating materials using artificial neural networks

In this research work,a few sets of experiments have been performed in high voltage laboratory on various cellulosic insulating materials like diamond-dotted paper,paper phenolic sheets,cotton phenolic sheets,leatheroid,and presspaper,to measure different electrical parameters like breakdown strength,relative permittivity,loss tangent,*** the dependency of breakdown strength on other physical parameters,different Artificial Neural Network(ANN)models are proposed for the prediction of breakdown *** ANN model results are compared with those obtained experimentally and also with the values already predicted from an empirical relation suggested by Swanson and *** reported results indicated that the breakdown strength predicted from the ANN model is in good agreement with the experimental values.

Hepatoprotective effect of acetone semicarbazone on Ehrlich ascites carcinoma induced carcinogenesis in experimental mice

Objective:To determine the hepatoprotective effect of acetone semicarbazone(ASC)in vivo in normal and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma(EAC)bearing male Swiss albino ***:Druginduced changes in biochemical and behavioral parameters at dose of 2.0 mg/kg body weight for14 d and nullifying the toxicity induced by EAC cells were *** histopathology studies of the protective effects of ASC on vital organs were also ***:The administration of ASC made insignificant changes in body weight and behavioral(salivation,diarrhea,muscular numbness)changes during treatment period due to minor toxicity were minimized after the treatment in normal *** biochemical parameters,including serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase,glutamate oxaloactate transaminase,alkaline phosphatase,serum glucose,cholesterol,urea,triglyceride and billirubin changed modestly in normal mice receiving *** the treatment continued,these values gradually decreased to normal level after the *** EAC bearing mice,the toxic effects due to EAC cells in all cases were nullified by treatment with the *** abnormalities were not detected in histology of the various organs of the normal mice treated with ***:ASC can,therefore,be considered safe in formulating novel anticancer drug,as it exhibits strong protective effect against EAC cell bearing mice.

Six Years Clinical Experience and Surgical Considerations in Management of Cardiac Myxoma in Iraqi Center for Heart Disease—Single Center Experience

Background: Cardiac myxomas are the most frequently encountered benign cardiac tumors that if left untreated are inexorably progressive and potentially fatal. Surgery is the only way of treatment, and if not treated with the right surgical technique recurrence occurs. Objectives: In this single center study we documented the patterns of presentation, localization, surgical approaches and outcome of cardiac myxomas. Methods: This is a retrospective study of 20 patients who underwent surgical removal of atrial myxoma from January 2010 to December 2015. All patients underwent general investigations, and echocardiography was performed on all patients and surgery was done using extracorporeal circulation and mild hypothermia. Results: The ages of the patients ranged from 14 years to 71 years, with a mean of 51.45 years. Most myxomas (75%) originated from left atrium, 20% from right atrium and biatrial in 5% of cases. The male-to-female ratio was 1:2.3 (14 females and 6 males). Myxomas were more common in blood group A+ and B+. Chief complaints were dyspnea (70%) and palpitation (50%). The majority of masses were attached to the interatrial septum (65%) and four of cases (20%) arose from the lateral wall. Right atrial trans-septal incision was used in 55% of cases. No recurrence was recorded in our study. Six patients had postoperative complications, mainly in the form of arrhythmia (3 cases), bleeding (0ne case) and renal failure (one case) which resulted in the death of the patient. Conclusions: Cardiac myxoma excision account for a very small percentage of cardiac procedures. Immediate surgical treatment is indicated because of high risk of embolization and sudden death. Cardiac myxomas can be excised with a low rate of mortality and morbidity. Follow-up examination, including echocardiography, should be performed regularly.
