＜正＞ The alkali silica reaction may lead to damage in concrete. Even though the reaction has been known for sometime and extensively studied, it is difficult to predict the advancement of the reaction and its consequences inaffected *** paper presents part of larger study that aims to study the relationship between the progress of the reaction andthe evolution of the mechanical properties of concrete in order to support better prognosis of the effect of ASR onaffected *** basic approach is to characterise the microstructural and mechanical state of mortar and concrete in the initialstate and throughout the expansion;so as to determine how the progress of the chemical reaction is related to thechanges in mechanical *** micro structural characteristics of some Swiss aggregates have been studied and quantified using microscopictechniques. Mortar samples were subjected to the “Microbar test”（2 days alkaline environment at 150 ℃） toreach the limits of the ASR. The amount of reaction was quantified by analysis of backscattered electron （BSE）images of polished samples in the scanning electron microscope （SEM）. These results were compared with thedegree of reaction observed in mortar bars throughout the expansion process. There is a very promisingcorrelation of the amount of reaction measured with the degree of expansion.
