Plant community dynamics in arid lands: the role of desert ants

Ants (Formicidae, Hymenoptera) play an important role in seed bank, seedling establishment andplant composition of arid ecosystems. Thus, knowing plant-ant interaction provides useful information formanagers to design restoration and conservation plans. In this study, the roles of desert harvester ants (Messorintermedius and Messor melancholicus) and scavenger ants (Cataglyphis nodus and Lepisiota semenovi) on plantcommunities were investigated in arid ecosystems of southeastern Iran. Two vegetation types weredistinguished in the study area and the nest density of ant species was determined. Furthermore, plantcomposition and soil seed bank were estimated at different distances from the ant nests. Results showed thatthe density of M. intermedius and M. melancholicus nests was higher in dwarf shrub-shrub vegetation type and thedensity of C. nodus and L. semenovi nests was higher in dwarf shrub vegetation type. The harvester and scavengerants had enhanced the seed bank to 55% and 70%, respectively. Therefore, the role of scavenger ants on theplant communities' seed bank was greater than that of harvester ants. Although the scavenger ants were moreinfluential on the annuals and the invasive plant species, the radius impact of the harvester ants on theperennials was greater, i.e., a positive interaction existed between the perennial plants and the harvester ants. *** and L. semenovi played an important role in enhancing the ecosystem's potential for restoration throughestablishment of pioneer species in early stage of succession. The activity of M. intermedius is crucial for thedevelopment and maintenance of climax plant communities in arid ecosystems through assisting the plantspecies' establishment in late stage of succession. It is essential to preserve the diversity of these key ant speciesfor the maintenance and sustainability of shrubs in arid ecosystems.

Proposing a novel geo-structural model for Torbat-e-Jam-Fariman plain(Northeast of Iran),based on Geomorphic indices calculation,conjugating the field evidences

There are various faults in northern and southern margins of Torbat-e-Jam-Fariman plain which show the probability of enormous earthquake in the *** present study the geomorphic indices contain Asymmetry Function(Af),Sinuosity of mountain front(Smf),Valley floor index(Vf),Hypsometric index(Hi),Mean Axial slope of channel index(MASC)and Drainage Basin Shape(Bs),have been utilized to determine the relative tectonic activity index(IAT)to recognize,eventually,the geo-structural model of the study *** and folds control the geo-structural activities of the study area,and the geomorphic indices are being affected in consequence of their *** intensity of these activities is different throughout the *** are many geomorphic evidences,related to active transform fault which are detectable all over the study area such as deviated rivers,quaternary sediments transformation,fault ***,recognition of geo-structural model of the study area is extremely *** study,then,approved the results of geomorphic indices calculation in determining the geo-structural model of the study *** depicted that the geostructural model of the study area is a kind of Horsetail splay form which is in accordance to the relative tectonic activity of the study *** on the above mentioned results it can be predicted that the splays are the trail of Neyshabour fault.

Spatial correlation between groundwater seepage faces and fault zone in high bedrock channel: method and application

The groundwater may recharge the surface water bodies through seepage faces and *** spatial correlation between the fault zones and the groundwater seepage faces results in deep understanding of the hydrogeologic regime,especially where there is no monitoring *** these recharging zones by conventional methods is a challenging task;particularly in areas where(1)there is no hydrogeologic monitoring boreholes or reliable data,(2)private pumps withdraw the stream,and(3)intense canopy limits the use of drones and satellite *** paper aims to study the relationship between the fault zones and occurrence of the groundwater seepage faces by using the high resolution handheld thermal imaging cameras as a tool to locate the seepage faces along a small river in the Damavand County,north of *** correlation between the structural geology features and occurrence of the groundwater seepage faces revealed that the stream in the study area is being recharged by the groundwater at extensive fault ***,this study suggests that the handheld thermal imaging cameras are a useful robust tools to evaluate the surface-groundwater ***,it is essential to use the field structural geologic and hydrogeologic observations to interpret the thermal images.

Optimal design of structures for earthquake loads by a hybrid RBF-BPSO method

The optimal seismic design of structures requires that time history analyses （THA） be carried out repeatedly. This makes the optimal design process inefficient, in particular, if an evolutionary algorithm is used. To reduce the overall time required for structural optimization, two artificial intelligence strategies are employed. In the first strategy, radial basis function （RBF） neural networks are used to predict the time history responses of structures in the optimization flow. In the second strategy, a binary particle swarm optimization （BPSO） is used to find the optimum design. Combining the RBF and BPSO, a hybrid RBF-BPSO optimization method is proposed in this paper, which achieves fast optimization with high computational performance. Two examples are presented and compared to determine the optimal weight of structures under earthquake loadings using both exact and approximate analyses. The numerical results demonstrate the computational advantages and effectiveness of the proposed hybrid RBF-BPSO optimization method for the seismic design of structures.

On the occurrence of Neoplanorbulinella Matsumaru, 1976(Foraminifera) from the late Oligocene of Central Iran(Qom Formation):Palaeobiogeographic implications

The shallow marine carbonates of the upper Oligocene Qom Formation yielded several occurrences of the foraminiferan genus Neoplanorbulinella Matsumaru. Neoplanorbulinella saipanensis Matsumaru has so far been recorded from the late Eocene-early Miocene of Japan and late Oligocene of NE Italy whereas N. malatyaensis Gedik is only reported from the Oligocene from its type locality in the Malatya Basin, eastern Turkey. The new records reported here from the Qom Formation indicate that both species occur in the Dobaradar section, ca. 10 km south of the city of Qom in North-Central Iran. The palaeogeographic distribution of these two species therefore has to be extended as far as the palaeolongitude of current Central *** accompanying larger benthic foraminifers, including Miogypsinoides complanatus(Schlumberger),M. formosensis Yabe and Hanzawa, Spiroclypeus margaritatus(Schlumberger), Operculina complanata(Defrance), and Risananeiza pustulosa Boukhary et al., indicate the upper Chattian SBZ 23 Zone. The coexistence of the N. saipanensis and N. malatyaensis points to suitable palaeobiogeographic conditions of Central Iran to host Western and Eastern Tethyan taxa.

Cloud service selection using cloud service brokers: approaches and challenges

Cloud computing users are faced with a wide variety of services to choose from. Consequently, a number of cloud service brokers (CSBs) have emerged to help users in their service selection process. This paper reviews the recent approaches that have been introduced and used for cloud service brokerage and discusses their challenges accordingly. We propose a set of attributes for a CSB to be considered effective. DifFerent CSBs' approaches are classified as either single service or multiple service models. The CSBs are then assessed, analyzed, and compared with respect to the proposed set of attributes. Based on our studies, CSBs with multiple service models that support more of the proposed effective CSB attributes have wider application in cloud computing environments.

Influence of non-stationarity and auto-correlation of climatic records on spatio-temporal trend and seasonality analysis in a region with prevailing arid and semi-arid climate,Iran

Trend and stationarity analysis of climatic variables are essential for understanding climate variability and provide useful information about the vulnerability and future changes,especially in arid and semi-arid *** this study,various climatic zones of Iran were investigated to assess the relationship between the trend and the stationarity of the climatic *** Mann-Kendall test was considered to identify the trend,while the trend free pre-whitening approach was applied for eliminating serial correlation from the ***,time series stationarity was tested by Dickey-Fuller and Kwiatkowski-Phillips-Schmidt-Shin *** results indicated an increasing trend for mean air temperature series at most of the stations over various climatic zones,however,after eliminating the serial correlation factor,this increasing trend changes to an insignificant decreasing trend at a 95%confidence *** seasonal mean air temperature trend suggested a significant increase in the majority of the *** mean air temperature increased more in northwest towards central parts of Iran that mostly located in arid and semiarid climatic *** trend reveals an insignificant downward trend in most of the series over various climatic zones;furthermore,most of the stations follow a decreasing trend for seasonal ***,spatial patterns of trend and seasonality of precipitation and mean air temperature showed that the northwest parts of Iran and margin areas of the Caspian Sea are more vulnerable to the changing climate with respect to the precipitation shortfalls and *** analysis indicated that the stationarity of climatic series influences on their trend;so that,the series which have significant trends are not *** findings of this investigation can help planners and policy-makers in various fields related to climatic issues,implementing better management and planning strategies to adapt to climate chang

Evolving Hoava cosmological horizons

Several sets of radially propagating null congruence generators are exploited in order to form 3-dimensional marginally trapped surfaces, referred to as black hole and cosmological apparent horizons in a Hoava universe. Based on this method, we deal with the characteristics of the 2-dimensional space-like spheres of symmetry and the peculiarities of having trapping horizons. Moreover, we apply this method in standard expanding and contracting FLRW cosmological models of a Horava universe to investigate the conditions under which the extra parameters of the theory may lead to trapped/anti-trapped surfaces both in the future and in the past. We also include the cases of negative time, referred to as the finite past, and discuss the formation of anti-trapped surfaces inside the cosmological apparent horizons.

Evolutionary algorithm for optimization of multilayer coatings

In this paper, a new evolutionary algorithm, the well-known imperialist competition algorithm, is proposed for optimizing the optical thin-films. In this method, the process is modeled of the competition between countries as imperialists and their colonizing of others as colonies. This algorithm could be an appropriate alternative to some of the more popular algorithms for optimizing the optical thin-films for good performance. The polarizer and edge filter for example are designed by using the imperialist competition algorithm method and the results are compared with those from two optimization high-performance methods： the genetic algorithm and differential evolutionary algorithm. Based on these results,the performance of the imperialist competition algorithm method shows that this algorithm is not sensitive to the change of its parameters and it can be an important advantage for quickly achieving a global optimal point. On the other hand the results show a better ratio of P-polarization transmittance to S-polarization transmittance in the design of a 1540-nm polarizer, which is more appropriate than the results from the other two methods. In the second design, an edge filter with a lower number of layers and more uniform bandpass spectrum than the counterparts of those methods is obtained. These results indicate that the imperialist competition algorithm is a robust method for optical thin-film designs.
