Role of endoscopic ultrasound/SpyScope in diagnosis and treatment of choledocholithiasis in pregnancy

Cholelithiasis and choledocholithiasis occur frequently in pregnancy and their management can be complicated. Traditional endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP)is the first line treatment for choledocholithiasis,but in addition to its baseline risks,fluoroscopy poses an additional radiation risk to the fetus. Endoscopic ultrasound(EUS)is an accurate modality for detecting common bile duct stones,but its role has not been defined in *** describe an alternative management strategy to conventional ERCP in a pregnant patient with choledocholithiasis and cholangitis detected using EUS and choledochoscopy.

Combined tests of prostate specific antigen and testosterone will improve diagnosis and monitoring the progression of prostate cancer

Prostate-specific antigen （PSA） testing has been widely used to screen men for prostate cancer （PCa） and to monitor PCa progression. However, more studies have shown that around 15% of men with low or normal PSA levels have PCa. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship of androgen and PSA levels and to better understand the reason that some PCa patients have low serum PSA values. The in vitro data demonstrated that cultured LNCaP cells ceased to produce PSA after androgen withdrawal and resumed PSA production after androgen was re-added. The in vivo experiment results showed that 48% of PCa xenografts carrying mice have serum PSA level lower than 4 ng ml^-1. The serum PSA levels increased significantly with rises in testosterone （T） levels 1 week after T pellet implantation. These data indicated that the androgen is a key factor controlling the production of PSA. Low serum PSA levels in mice with PCa xenografts are associated with low serum T levels. Raising serum T levels in tumor caring mice will also significantly increase serum PSA level. This may have clinical implications when screening PSA in men, who have occult PCa.

New approaches to water purification for resource- constrained settings： Production of activated biochar by chemical activation with diammonium hydrogenphosphate

A significant portion of the world＇s population does not have access to safe drinking water. This problem is most acute in remote, resource-constrained rural settings in developing countries. Water filtration using activated carbon is one of the important steps in treating con- taminated water. Lignocellulosic biomass is generally available in abundance in such locations, such as the African rain forests. Our work is focused on developing a simple method to synthesize activated biochar from locally available materials. The preparation of activated biochar with diammonium hydrogenphosphate （DAP） as the activating agent is explored under N2 flow and air. The study, carried out with cellulose as a model biomass, provides some insight into the interaction between DAP and biomass, as well as the char forming mechanism. Various characterization techniques such as N2 physisorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy are utilized to compare the properties between biochar formed under nitrogen and partial oxidative conditions. At a temperature of 450 ℃, the loading of DAP over cellulose is systematically varied, and its effect on activation is examined. The activated biochar samples are predominantly microporous in the range of concentrations studied. The interaction of DAP with cellulose is investigated and the nature of bonding of the heteroatoms to the carbonaceous matrix is elucidated. The results indicate that the quality of biochar prepared under partial oxidation condition is comparable to that ofbiochar prepared under nitrogen, leading to the possibility of an activated biochar production scheme on a small scale in resource-constrained settings.

A Systems Approach for Analyzing Vegetative and Soil Degradation in Arnigad Micro-watershed of Indian Himalayan Region

This study analyzes the vegetative and soil degradation,measured as biomass and soil loss,for Arnigad micro-watershed located in Indian Himalayan state of Uttarakhand,in systems framework by using dynamic linear programming bio-economic *** focus is at investigating the effects of alternate policy regimes,i.e.,introduction of improved energy sources for cooking along with substitution of existing local livestock breeds with improved breed,reduction in human population growth and introduction of high yielding varieties of main crops including paddy,maize and *** model horizon extended over a period of 25 years,i.e.,from 2006 to *** was found that the model scenario incorporating increased use of improved energy sources along with substitution of local cows by improved cows could be the most effective policy option in reducing vegetative and soil *** vegetative biomass density declined to 19.76% compared to 35.24% in the BASE scenario and soil erosion loss was also lowered by 29.13%.Also,the reduction of population growth rate to half of the BASE scenario led to minor improvements in *** of high yielding varieties of main crops slightly increased vegetative degradation but reduced soil loss(8.35%) with respect to the BASE *** a phenomenon could be explained in terms of changed crop mix resulting in reduced amount of crop by-products requiring increased lopping of tree branches for animal *** policy option of the increased use of improved energy sources along with substitution of improved breed of cows resulted in 9.58% higher *** of high yielding varieties of crops led to 1.92% increase in income,but the income decreased by 1.25 % when population growth was reduced to *** usefulness of the model lies in analyzing the systems behavior in its entirety where the results can predict the possible direction of change as a result of manipulation in alternate economic regimes.

Graphene is a fascinating material of recent origin whose first isolation was being made possible through micromechanical cleavage of a graphite crystal. Owing to its fascinating properties, graphene has garnered significant attention in the research community for multiple applications. A number of methods have been employed for the synthesis of single-layer and multi-layer graphene. The extraordinary properties of graphene such as its Hall effect at room temperature, high surface area, tunable bandgap, high charge mobility and excellent electrical, conducting and thermal properties allow for the development of sensors of various types and also opened the doors for its use in nanoelectronics, supercapacitors and batteries. Biological aspects of graphene have also been investigated with particular emphasis on its toxicity and drug delivery. In this review, many of the salient aspects of graphene, such as from synthesis to its applications, primarily focusing on sensor applications which are of current interest, are covered.

Source apportionment of PM10 in Delhi, India using PCA/APCS, UNMIX and PMF

Source apportionment of particulate matter （PM10） measurements taken in Delhi, India between January 2013 and June 2014 was carried out using two receptor models, principal component analysis with absolute principal component scores （PCA/APCS） and UNMIX. The results were compared with previous estimates generated using the positive matrix factorization （PMF） receptor model to investigate each model＇s source-apportioning capability. All models used the PM10 chemical composition （organic carbon （OC）, elemental carbon （EC）, water soluble inorganic ions （WSIC）, and trace elements） for source apportionment. The average PM10 concentration during the study period was 249.7±103.9 μg/m3 （range： 61.4-584.8 μg/m3）. The UNMIX model resolved five sources （soil dust （SD）, vehicular emissions （VE）, secondary aerosols （SA）, a mixed source of biomass burning （BB） and sea salt （SS）, and industrial emissions （IE））. The PCA/APCS model also resolved five sources, two of which also included mixed sources （SD, VE, SD＋SS, （SA＋BB＋SS） and 1E）. The PMF analysis differentiated seven individual sources （SD, VE, SA, BB, SS, IE, and fossil fuel combustion （FFC））. All models identified the main sources contributing to PM10 emissions and reconfirmed that VE, SA, BB, and SD were the dominant contributors in Delhi.

Comparison of different cationic polymers efficacy in fabrication of alginate multilayer microcapsules

In past decades, alginate-based multilayer microcapsules have been given important attention in various pharmaceutical investigations. Alginate-poly l lysine-alginate(APA) is studied the most. Due to the similarity between the structure of polyethyleneimine(PEI) and poly-L-lysine(PLL) and also lower price of PEI than PLL, this study was conducted to compare the efficacy of linear(LPEI) and branch(BPEI) forms of PEI with PLL as covering layers in fabrication of microcapsules. The microcapsules were fabricated using electrostatic bead generator and their shape/size, surface roughness, mechanical strength, and interlayer interactions were also investigated using optical microscopy, AFM, explosion test and FTIR, respectively. Furthermore, cytotoxicity was evaluated by comparing the two anionic final covering layers alginate(Alg) and sodium cellulose sulphate(NCS) using MTT test. BPEI was excluded from the rest of the study due to its less capacity to strengthen the microcapsules and also the aggregation of the resultant alginate-BPEI-alginate microcapsules, while LPEI showed properties similar to PLL. MTT test also showed that NCS has no superiority over Alg as final covering layer. Therefore, it is concluded that, LPEI could be considered as a more cost effective alternative to PLL and a promising subject for future studies.
