AIM:To assess the reliability and practical applicability of the widely used Alvarado,Eskelinen,Ohhmann and Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Appendicitis(RIPASA)scoring systems in patients with suspected acute ***:Patients admitted to our tertiary center due to suspected acute appendicitis constituted the study *** were divided into two *** group(Group A)consisted of patients who underwent appendectomy and were histopathologically diagnosed with acute appendicitis,and non-appendicitis group(Group N-A)consisted of patients who underwent negative appendectomy and were diagnosed with pathologies other than appendicitis and patients that were followed *** operative findings for the patients,the additional analyses from follow up of the patients and the results of those analyses were recorded using the follow-up ***:One hundred and thirteen patients with suspected acute appendicitis were included in the *** the 113 patients(62 males,51 females),the mean age was 30.2±10.1(range 18-67)*** the 113patients,94 patients underwent surgery,while the rest were followed *** the 94 patients,77patients were histopathologically diagnosed with acute *** study showed a sensitivity level of81%for the Alvarado system when a cut-off value of 6.5was used,a sensitivity level of 83.1%for the Ohmann system when a cut-off value of 13.75 was used,a sensitivity level of 80.5%for the Eskelinen system when a cut-off value of 63.72 was used,and a sensitivity level of 83.1%for the RIPASA system when a cut-off value of 10.25 was ***:The Ohmann and RIPASA scoring systems had the highest specificity for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis.

Excitonics,an alternative to romising for processing information since semiconductor electronics is rapidly approaching the end of Moore’s ***,the development of excitonic devices,where exciton flow is controlled,is mainly focused on electric-field modulation or exciton polaritons in high-Q ***,we show an alloptical strategy to manipulate the exciton flow in a binary colloidal quantum well complex through mediation of the Förster resonance energy transfer(FRET)by stimulated *** the spontaneous emission regime,FRET naturally occurs between a donor and an *** contrast,upon stronger excitation,the ultrafast consumption of excitons by stimulated emission effectively engineers the excitonic flow from the donors to the ***,the acceptors’stimulated emission significantly accelerates the exciton flow,while the donors’stimulated emission almost stops this *** this basis,a FRET-coupled rate equation model is derived to understand the controllable exciton flow using the density of the excited donors and the unexcited *** results will provide an effective alloptical route for realizing excitonic devices under room temperature operation.

English Needs＂ EL Programme for Distance Education Learners

This paper will discuss the findings of students＇ needs for an EL （English language） programme at the SDE （School of Distance Education）, USM （Universiti Sains Malaysia）, Penang. English is offered as a compulsory subject for all its students since the School＇s inception in 1971, and the subject has not moved beyond that status quo. However, in the new millennium, with USM having been selected as a research university with an apex status, the expectation of its stakeholders has increased. SDE needs to keep abreast with what is on and what is up in distance education teaching and learning so that its programmes remain relevant. It cannot remain complacent with its present courses Taking into consideration the current needs of its stakeholders within the realm of distance teaching and learning, the researchers carried out a research on the need for an EL programme. Findings show that the students agree that an English programme will help them improve their language and their upward mobility. Majority of the students will sign up for the course if it is offered. This research will provide insights for curriculum developers and lecturers at the SDE to design a new English programme tailored towards meeting the needs of their adult students

English Language Needs of Non-native Foreign Students

This paper will investigate the English language needs of non-native foreign students who are studying at the University of Otago, New Zealand. These students comprise of students from Asia （China, Thailand, Korea, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, to name a few） and Europe. For these students, English is their second or third language and they face proficiency problems. To them, mastery of English is most important because all the courses in the university are taught in English and unless the students are proficient to operate in English, they will lose out and face difficulties in securing good grades for their subjects. Findings of this research will provide insights for the curriculum developers and English teachers at public universities especially in Malaysia that have been accepting students from Asia and the Middle East. The present curriculum need to be reviewed or a new curriculum need to be designed to meet the English needs of their non-native foreign students

Causes of 2022 summer marine heatwave in the East China Seas

Recent occurrences of marine heatwaves(MHWs)in coastal China seas have caused serious impacts on marine ecosystem services and ***,the underlying physical process,including local drivers and remote associations,remains poorly understood,thereby hindering accurate *** this study,we reported an extreme MHW event in the East China Seas(ECSs,including the Bohai,Yellow,and East China Sea),lasting for 75 d with a maximum intensity of 1.96℃relative to 1982-2011 during the summer *** ECSs MHW event was triggered by a combination of anomalous atmospheric and oceanic conditions,including enhanced insolation,weakened surface wind speed,suppressed latent heat loss from ocean,a shallower mixed layer,and upper ocean current ***-layer temperature budget diagnosis suggested that changes in the ECSs temperature were dominated by the surface net heat flux,largely due to strong shortwave radiation flux,during the development and decay of the MHW *** advection also created favorable conditions for the maintenance of the *** physical drivers were further regulated by the westward expanded and intensified western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH),potentially linked to the negative phase of Indian Ocean Dipole(IOD).Despite the three years(2020-2022)consecutive La Niña events,the ECSs summer MHWs appeared to be more closely linked to negative IOD events,with a lagging period of 1-3 *** seasonal precursor signals of the negative IOD have the potential to affect local physical drivers of ECSs MHWs through regulating the strength and position of WPSH,thus serving as a promising predictor for the ECSs *** future likelihood and intensity of the ECSs MHWs are projected to increase substantially in the coming decades,largely due to broad-scale warming attributed to anthropogenic climate ***,there is an urgent need to develop MHW forecasting and early warning systems,and robust approaches to address climat

Prolonged QT dispersion in inflammatory bowel disease

AIM:To investigate the frequency and factors of prolonged QT dispersion that may lead to severe ventricular arrhythmias in patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).METHODS:This study included 63 ulcerative colitis(UC) and 41 Crohn's disease(CD) ***-seven healthy patients were included as the control *** rate was calculated using electrocardiography,corrected QT dispersion(QTcd) and the Bazett's *** model assessment(HOMA) was used to determine insulin resistance(IR).HOMA values 2.5 indicated a high probability of ***:Prolonged QTcd was found in 12.2% of UC patients,and in 14.5% of CD patients compared with the control group(P < 0.05).A significant difference was found between the insulin values(CD:10.95 ± 6.10 vs 6.44 ± 3.28,P < 0.05;UC:10.88 ± 7.19 vs 7.20 ± 4.54,P < 0.05) and HOMA(CD:2.56 ± 1.43 vs 1.42 ± 0.75,P < 0.05;UC:2.94 ± 1.88 vs 1.90 ± 1.09,P < 0.05) in UC and CD patients with and without prolonged *** behavior types were determined in CD patients with prolonged *** systolic arterial pressure(125 ± 13.81 vs 114.09 ± 8.73,P < 0.01) and age(48.67 ± 13.93 vs 39.57 ± 11.58,P < 0.05) in UC patients were significantly associated with prolonged ***:Our data show that IBD patients have prolonged QTcd in relation to *** routine followup of IBD patients should include determination of HOMA,insulin values and electrocardiogram examination.

Structural model of factors relating to the health promotion behavior of reproductive health among Indonesian adolescents

Objectives:We aim to explore the factors related to the health promotion behavior of reproductive health(RH)among Indonesian adolescents via structural equation ***:A cross-sectional quantitative study was used to measure 108 adolescents aged 12-16 *** employed a self-administered questionnaire developed from the health promotion model(HPM)and the empowerment model(EM)on the basis of self-efficacy to determine the factors related to health promotion in maintaining RH *** equation modeling(SEM)was used to examine re-lationships among the *** Analysis of Moment Structures(AMOS)approach was used to evaluate if the proposed model is suitable for the data based on goodness-of-fit ***:The model is appropriate for the *** interrelationships emerge among independent variables(P>0.05),namely,personal and cognitive behaviors(r=-0.01),cognitive and health pro-motion behaviors(r=0.09),and affective and health promotion behaviors(r=-0.17).The strongest relationship is between empowerment and health promotion behavior(r=0.72).Affection(interper-sonal and situational influences),immediate competing demands and preferences,and empowerment(participation and control)are directly related to RH behavior ***,willingness of adolescents,prior related behavior,personal factor,and commitment to a plan of action are indirectly related to RH behavior *** model explains 43.9%of the variance in maintaining RH ***:The HPM and EM models help determine the factors related to RH behavior maintenance among *** to promote RH among Indonesian adolescents should begin from the level of child-parent-health care professional encounter for empowering the RH of adolescents.

The application of polymers to replace oleylamine(OLA)and oleic acid(OA)as ligands for perovskite nanocrystals is an effective strategy to improve their stability and durability especially for the solution-based ***,we report a mechanosynthesis of lead bromide perovskite nanoparticles(NPs)stabilized by partially hydrolyzed poly(methyl methacrylate)(h-PMMA)and highmolecular-weight highly-branched poly(ethylenimine)(PEI-25K).The as-synthesized NP solutions exhibited green emission centered at 516 nm,possessing a narrow full-width at half-maximum of 17 nm and as high photoluminescence quantum yield(PL QY)as 85%,while showing excellent durability and resistance to polar solvents,e.g.,*** colloids of polymer-stabilized NPs were directly processable toform stable and strongly-emitting thin films and solids,making them attractive as gain ***,the roles of h-PMMA and PEI-25K in the grinding process were studied in *** h-PMMA can form micelles in the grinding solvent of dichloromethane to act as size-regulating templates for the growth of *** PEI-25K with large amounts of amino groups induced significant enrichment of PbBr_(2)in the reaction mixture,which in turn caused the formation of CsPb_(2)Br_(5)-mPbBr_(2)and CsPbBr_(3)-Cs_(4)PbBr_(6)-nCsBr *** presence of CsPbBr_(3)-Cs_(4)PbBr_(6)-nCsBr NPs was responsible for the high PL QY,as the Cs_(4)PbBr_(6)phase with a wide energy bandgap can passivate the surface defects of the CsPbBr_(3)*** work describes a direct and facile mechanosynthesis of polymer-coordinated perovskite NPs and promotes in-depth understanding of the formation and phase conversion for perovskite NPs in the grinding process.

The electron-hole exchange interaction significantly influences the optical properties of excitons and radiative decay. However, exciton dynamics in luminescent carbon dots （Cdots） is still not clear. In this study, we have developed a simple and efficient one-step strategy to synthesize luminescent Cdots using the pyrolysis of oleylamine. The sp^2 clusters of a few aromatic rings are responsible for the observed blue photoluminescence. The size of these clusters can be tuned by controlling the reaction time, and the energy gap between the π-π＊ states of the sp^2 domains decreases as the sp^2 cluster size increases. More importantly, the strong electron-hole exchange interaction results in the splitting of the exciton states of the sp^2 clusters into the singlet-bright and triplet-dark states with an energy difference ΔE, which decreases with increasing sp^2 cluster size owing to the reduction of the confinement energy and the suppression of the electron-hole exchange interaction.

High-efficiency CdTe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals in water enabled by photo-induced colloidal hetero-epitaxy of CdS shelling at room temperature

We report high-efficiency CdTe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals synthesized in water by epitaxially growing CdS shells on aqueous CdTe cores at room temperature, enabled by the controlled release of S species under low-intensity ultraviolet （UV） light illumination. The resulting photo-induced dissociation of S2O2- ions conveniently triggers the formation of critical two-dimensional CdS epitaxy on the CdTe surface at room temperature, as opposed to initiating the growth of individual CdS core-only nanocrystals. This controlled colloidal hetero-epitaxy leads to a substantial increase in the photoluminescence （PL） quantum yield （QY） of the shelled nanocrystals in water （reaching 64%）. With a systematic set of studies, the maximum PL QY is found to be almost independent of the illuminating UV intensity, while the shell formation kinetics required for reaching the maximum QY linearly depends on the illuminating UV intensity. A stability study of the QD films in air at various temperatures shows highly improved thermal stability of the shelled QDs （up to 120 ℃ in ambient air）. These results indicate that the proposed aqueous CdTe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals hold great promise for applications requiring efficiency and stability.
