Estimation of red tip disease severity in pineapple using a non-contact sensor approach

Red tip disease on pineapple (Ananas comosus) was first recognized about 20 years ago in a commercial pineapple stand located in Simpang Renggam, Johor, Peninsular Malaysia. Since its discovery, there has been no confirmation on the causal agent of red tip disease. The epidemiology of red tip disease is still not fully understood. However, based on disease symptoms and field transmission mode, red tip disease seems to be strongly associated with viral infection. The aim of this work was to assess the feasibility of using an optical sensor to estimate red tip disease severity. This work was performed in a commercial pineapple plantation located in Simpang Renggam, Johor. Four observation plots bearing pineapple variety SR36 were demarcated based on crop growth stage. Each plot comprised a total of eighty corresponding measurements of percent Disease Severity (% DS) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Our data showed a strong correlation between % DS and NDVI. The 7- and 11-month plantings registered a correlation coefficient (r) of -0.83 and -0.88, respectively. The negative correlation infers that NDVI increases when disease severity is low. This is expected since healthy leaves reflect more near-infrared light and less visible light which results in a higher NDVI. The regression of NDVI on % DS for the 7-month planting was explained by: % DS = 181.6 - 185.6*NDVI. Meanwhile, the regression of NDVI on % DS for the 11-month planting was explained by: % DS = 213.2 - 219.8*NDVI. The linear fit between measured % DS and estimated % DS from the 7-month and 11-month plantings was relatively strong. This work has demonstrated that NDVI is a reliable predictor of % DS in pineapple.

K-anonymity is a model to protect public released data from identification. These techniques have been focus of intense research in the last few years. An important requirement for such techniques is to minimize the information loss due to anonymization, it is crucial to group similar data together and then anonymize each group individually. In this paper we propose an approach that uses the idea of clustering to minimize information loss and thus ensure good data quality in k-anonymization model. This work compares the performance of two recently proposed clustering-based techniques for k-anonymization, and proposes a hybrid of both techniques to achieve less information loss than each of the original techniques. Based on results show that the proposed hybrid technique reduces not only the total information loss but also the variance of information loss among groups.

Case Report: Dual Antiplatelet in Capsular Warning Syndrome

Background: Capsular warning syndrome (CWS) is defined as a recurrent stereotype transient lacunar syndrome without cortical symptoms. However, to date, there is limited literature proposed on the definitive treatment options for the prevention of persistent stroke in cases of capsular warning syndrome. Aim: The aim of this case report is to address dual antiplatelet therapy as a treatment choice in CWS to prevent progressive stroke. Case presentation: A 56-year-old man with several comorbidities experienced recurrent periods of limb weakness and dysarthria lasting 5 - 20 minutes with a complete resolution of symptoms in between. The fluctuating episodes lasted for 72 hours followed by a persistent minor stroke. A gadolinium-enhanced MRI scan of the brain revealed a right basal ganglia infarct. He was treated with dual antiplatelet, and his functional outcome was favourable at 90 days post stroke. Conclusion: Dual antiplatelet may be a beneficial therapeutic option in CWS in improving functional outcomes in the early neurological deficit and decreasing the clinical fluctuation.

Objective:To explore the effects of kelulut honey on bone structure and histomorphometry against glucocorticoid-induced ***:Thirty-five male rats were used(n=7).Twenty-eight adrenalectomized rats were divided into four groups;each group was given normal saline 0.9%(negative control),calcium water(positive control),kelulut honey(200 mg/kg/day and 400 mg/kg/day,respectively)treatment,*** of them were administered with intramuscular injection of dexamethasone(120μg/kg/day)to induce *** sham operated rats were given vehicle palm olein 0.05 mL/100 g/day by intramuscular injection and 0.1 mL/kg/day *** the treatments were given daily for 2 *** peroxidation and oxidative stress enzymes were *** addition,bone structural and histomorphometry analyses were also ***:Two-month glucocorticoid treatment increased the level of malondialdehyde and decreased superoxide dismutase *** significant changes were found in the activities of catalase and glutathion *** volume/tissue volume and trabecular number were significantly reduced while trabecular separation of the femoral bones was increased which corresponded to the decreased number of osteoblast surface after two months of receiving glucocorticoid *** honey treatment restored the level of superoxide dismutase and reduced malondialdehyde significantly(P<0.05).Moreover,kelulut honey increased bone volume/tissue volume,trabecular number and decreased trabecular separation significantly(P<0.05),which were further confirmed by increased osteoblast surface and decreased osteoclast surface number(P<0.05).Conclusions:Kelulut honey may have potential bone protective effect,and may be a prophylaxis against glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.

Comparative Human Landing Catch and CDC Light Trap in Mosquito Sampling in Knowlesi Malaria Endemic Areas in Peninsula Malaysia

Adult mosquito sampling techniques are essential for monitoring transmission of malaria and other mosquito borne infections. Preference for any sampling technique depends on both its field efficiency and the characteristics of local vector populations. Surveys on adult mosquitoes using Human Landing Catch (HLC) and CO2-baited CDC light trap (CDC-LT) techniques were conducted in several knowlesi malaria endemic areas between the months of March to December 2012 in several states of Peninsula Malaysia. These two techniques were relatively compared to determine the preferences of anopheline mosquitoes towards CO2-baited CDC-LT technique using HLC technique as the reference method. Cx. gelidus, An. maculates and An. introlatus were the main three species collected by HLC technique, whereas the species collected by CO2-baited CDC-LT technique were mostly An. cracens, Ar. durhami and Coquillettidia species. Most of the Anopheles species were collected almost exclusively by the human collectors except for An. cracens and An. introlatus which were collected using both techniques. Anopheles cracens was the most dominant species captured using CO2-baited CDC-LT technique. This is the first report showing An. cracens was caught using CO2-baited CDC-LT technique in Malaysia.

Diagnostic evaluation of optical coherence tomography parameters in normal, preperimetric and perimetric glaucoma patients

AIM: To compare the diagnostic ability of glaucoma parameters measured by the optical coherence tomography(OCT) in normal, preperimetric glaucoma(PPG) and perimetric glaucoma(PG) patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study includes 127 eyes of 127 subjects. Patients were divided into PPG(51 eyes), PG(46 eyes), and normal controls(30 eyes) based on clinical optic disc assessment and Humphrey visual field changes. The Heidelberg Spectralis OCT machine using Glaucoma Module Premium Edition software was used to measure the retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL) and Bruch’s membrane opening-minimum rim width(BMO-MRW) to assess the optic nerve head and ganglion cell layer(GCL) thickness in the macula. RESULTS: RNFL, MRW, and GCL thickness were all significantly thinner in PG compared to PPG and the normal group. The BMO-MRW parameters showed better specificity(>70%) at 90% specificity compared to both RNFL and GCL parameters to discriminate normal, PPG, and PG patients. All BMO-MRW parameters showed higher area under curves(AUC) compared to RNFL and GCL parameters with the highest AUC observed in the superotemporal sector of the BMO-MRW(AUC=0.819 and and 0.897 between normal and PPG and PG groups respectively).CONCLUSION: While the BMO-MRW best discriminates PPG and PG against normal eyes, GCL parameters poorly differentiate the three groups.

Objective： The combination effect of Piperbetle （PB） and 5-fluorouracil （5-FU） in enhancing the cytotoxic potential of 5-FU in inhibiting the growth of colon cancer cells was investigated. Methods： HT29 and HCT116 cells were subjected to 5-FU or PB treatment. 5-FU and PB were then combined and their effects on both cell lines were observed after 24 h of treatment. PB-5-FU interaction was elucidated by isobologram analysis. Apoptosis features of the treated cells were revealed by annexin V/PI stain. High-performance liquid chromatography （HPLC） was performed to exclude any possible chemical interaction between the compounds. Results： In the presence of PB extract, the cytotoxicity of 5-FU was observed at a lower dose （IC^0 12.5 pmol/L） and a shorter time （24 h） in both cell lines. Both cell lines treated with 5-FU or PB alone induced a greater apoptosis effect compared with the combination treatment. Isobologram analysis indicated that PB and 5-FU interacted synergistically and antagonistically in inhibiting the growth of HT29 and HCT116 cells, respectively. Conclusions： In the presence of PB, a lower dosage of 5-FU is required to achieve the maximum drug effect in inhibiting the growth of HT29 cells. However, PB did not significantly reduce 5-FU dosage in HCT116 cells. Our result showed that this interaction may not solely contribute to the apoptosis pathway.

Antiproteinuric Effect of Aliskiren versus Losartan in Primary Glomerulonephritis

Introduction: Treatment with renin-angiotensin-aldosterone-system (RAAS) blockers plays a major role in halting chonic kidney disease (CKD) progression. Aliskiren is the first orally available direct renin inhibitor (DRI). Objective: We studied the efficacy of aliskiren compared to losartan in patients with primary GN. Design and Method: This was a prospective open-label randomized control trial in patients with primary GN. Patients were randomized to receive either aliskiren or losartan to maximum tolerated doses for 24 weeks. Blood and urine investigations were measured at baseline and at 4-weekly intervals. Adverse effects were recorded. Results: 22 patients were recruited (aliskiren-11 and losartan-11). Their baseline characteristics were comparable with the exception of a higher proteinuria (uPCI) in the aliskiren arm. There were no significant differences in proteinuria, blood pressure and other renal parameters between both groups. At end-study, only patients in the aliskiren arm showed significant reductions in both the systolic blood pressure and in proteinuria. There were no changes in the other parameters of renal function over time and no adverse events occurred. Conclusion: Aliskiren appears to be as efficacious and tolerable as losartan both as an antihypertensive and antiproteinuric agent in this study.

Introduction: Limited data are available for the use of sulodexide in primary glomerulonephritis (GN). Objective: We studied the efficacy of sulodexide compared to losartan in patients with primary GN. Design and Method: This was a prospective, open labelled, randomized control trial in patients with stable primary GN. Patients were randomized to receive either sulodexide or losartan to maximum tolerated doses for 12 weeks. Blood and urine investigations were measured at baseline and at 4-weekly intervals. Adverse effects were recorded. Results: 18 patients were recruited (10-sulodexide and 8-losartan). Their baseline characteristics were comparable. At end study, patients in both groups showed no significant reduction in proteinuria and there were no differences between groups at each visit. Nonetheless, there was a trend towards lower protein uria in the losartan but not in sulodexide group. There were no changes in the other parameters of renal function or of coagulation over time. No adverse events in particular clinical bleeding occurred. Conclusion: Sulodexide and losartan did not demonstrate any significant anti-proteinuric effect in primary GN. Nevertheless, there was a trend of better proteinuria reduction in losartan group. Furthermore, other renal parameters were not significantly affected by both drugs.
