Impact of Forestry Interventions on Groundwater Recharge and sediment Control in the Ganga River Basin

Water related services of natural infrastructure will help to combat the risk of water crisis, and nature-based solutions involve the management of ecosystems to mimic or optimize the natural processes for the provision and regulation of water. Forested areas provide environmental stability and supply a high proportion of the world’s accessible freshwater for domestic, agricultural, industrial and ecological needs. The present work on “Forestry Interventions for Ganga” to rejuvenate the river is one of the steps toward the Ganga River rejuvenation programme in the country. The consequences of forestry interventions for Ganga will be determined on the basis of water quantity and water quality in the Ganga River. The study conservatively estimated the water savings and sedimentation reduction of the riverscape management in the Ganga basin using the soil Conservation service Curve Number (sCs-CN) & GEC, 2015 and Trimble, 1999 & CWC, 2019 methodologies, respectively. Forestry plantations and soil and moisture conservation measures devised in the programme to rejuvenate the Ganga River are expected to increase water recharge and decrease sedimentation load by 231.011 MCM·yrsup>-1sup> and 1119.6 cubic m·yrsup>-1sup> or 395.20 tons·yrsup>-1sup>, respectively, in delineated riverscape area of 83,946 kmsup>2sup> in Ganga basin due to these interventions. The role of trees and forests in improving hydrologic cycles, soil infiltration and ground water recharge in Ganga basin seems to be the reason for this change. Forest plantations and other bioengineering techniques can help to keep rivers perennial, increase precipitation, prevent soil erosion and mitigate floods, drought & climate change. The bioengineering techniques could be a feasible tool to enhance rivers’ self-purification as well as to make river perennial. The results will give momentum to the National Mission of Clean Ganga (NMCG) and its Namami Gange programme including other important

Conditional disruption of the osterix gene in chondrocytes during early postnatal growth impairs secondary ossification in the mouse tibial epiphysis

In our previous studies, we have found that the prepubertal increase in thyroid hormone levels induces osterix(Osx) signaling in hypertrophic chondrocytes to transdifferentiate them into osteoblasts. To test if Osx expressed in chondrocytes directly contributes to transdifferentiation and secondary ossification, we generated Osx^flox/flox;Col2-Cre-ERT2 mice and knocked out Osx with a single injection of tamoxifen at postnatal day(P) 3 prior to evaluation of the epiphyseal bone phenotype by μCT, histology, and immunohistochemistry(IHC) at P21. Vehicle(oil)-treated Osx^flox/flox;Col2-Cre-ERT2 and tamoxifen-treated, Cre-negative Osx^flox/flox mice were used as controls.μCT analysis of tibial epiphyses revealed that trabecular bone mass was reduced by 23% in the Osx conditional knockout(c KO) compared with control mice. Trabecular number and thickness were reduced by 28% and 8%,respectively, while trabecular separation was increased by 24% in the c KO mice. Trichrome staining of longitudinal sections of tibial epiphyses showed that bone area and bone area adjusted for total area were decreased by 22% and 18%, respectively. IHC studies revealed the presence of abundant Osx-expressing prehypertrophic chondrocytes in the epiphyses of control mice at P10, but not in the cKO mice. Furthermore, expression levels of MMP13, COL10, ALP, and BsP were considerably reduced in the epiphyses of cKO mice. We also found that Osx overexpression in ATDC5 chondrocytes increased expression of Col10, Mmp13, Alp, and Bsp. Our data indicate that Osx expressed in chondrocytes plays a significant role in secondary ossification by regulating expression of genes involved in chondrocyte hypertrophy and osteoblast transdifferentiation.

In this paper, a new approach to stability analysis of nonlinear dynamics of an underactuated autonomous underwater vehicle（AUV） is presented. AUV is a highly nonlinear robotic system whose dynamic model includes coupled terms due to the hydrodynamic damping factors. It is difficult to analyze the stability of a nonlinear dynamical system through Routh＇s stability approach because it contains nonlinear dynamic parameters owing to hydrodynamic damping coefficients. It is also difficult to analyze the stability of AUVs using Lyapunov＇s criterion and Lasalle＇s invariance principle. In this paper, we proposed the extended-Routh＇s stability approach to verify the stability of such nonlinear dynamic systems. This extended-Routh＇s stability approach is much easier as compared to the other existing methods. Numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed stability verification of the nonlinear dynamic systems, e.g., an AUV system dynamics.

Deformation of plastically compressible hardening-softening-hardening solids

Motivated by a model of the response of vertically aligned carbon nanotube （VACNT） pillars in uniaxial compression, we consider the deformation of a class of compressible elastic-viscoplastic solids with a hardeningsoftening-hardening variation of flow strength with plastic strain. In previous work （Hutchens et al. 2011） a constitutive relation was presented and used to model the response of VACNT pillars in axisymmetric compression. subsequently, it was found that due to a programming error the constitutive relation presented in the paper （Hutchens et al. 2011） was not the one actually implemented. In particular, the plastic flow rule actually used did not satisfy plastic normality. Here, we present the constitutive formulation actually implemented in the previous work （Hutchens et al. 2011）. Dynamic, finite deformation, finite element calculations are carried out for uniaxial compression, uniaxial tension and for indentation of a ＂half-space＂ by a conical indenter tip. A sequential buckling-like deformation mode is found in compression when there is plastic non-normality and hardening- softening-hardening. The same material characterization gives rise to a Lfiders band-like deformation mode in ten- sion. When there is a deformation mode with a sharp front along mesh boundaries, the overall stress-strain response contains high frequency oscillations that are a mesh artifact. The responses of non-softening solids are also analyzed and their overall stress-strain behavior and deformation modes are compared with those of hardening-softening- hardening solids. We find that indentation with a sharp indenter tip gives a qualitatively equivalent response for hardening and hardening-softening-hardening solids.

Dynamic stability of axially accelerating viscoelastic plates with longitudinally varying tensions

The dynamic stability of axially accelerating plates is investigated. Longitudi- nally varying tensions due to the acceleration and nonhomogeneous boundary conditions are highlighted. A model of the plate combined with viscoelasticity is applied. In the viscoelastic constitutive relationship, the material derivative is used to take the place of the partial time derivative. Analytical and numerical methods are used to investigate summation and principal parametric resonances, respectively. By use of linear models for the transverse behavior in the small displacement regime, the plate is confined by a viscous damping force. The generalized Hamilton principle is used to derive the govern- ing equations, the initial conditions, and the boundary conditions of the coupled planar vibration. The solvability conditions are established by directly using the method of mul- tiple scales. The Routh-Hurwitz criterion is used to obtain the necessary and sufficient condition of the stability. Numerical examples are given to show the effects of related parameters on the stability boundaries. The validity of longitudinally varying tensions and nonhomogeneous boundary conditions is highlighted by comparing the results of the method of multiple scales with those of a differential quadrature scheme.

Excitations of optomechanically driven Bose Einstein condensates in a cavity: Photodetection measurements

We present a detailed study to analyze the Dicke quantum phase transition within the thermodynamic limit for an optomechanically driven Bose-Einstein condensate in a cavity. The photodetection-based quantum optical measurements have been performed to study the dynamics and excitations of this optomechanical Dicke system. For this, we discuss the eigenvalue analysis, fluorescence spectrum and the homodyne spectrum of the system. It has been shown that the normal phase is negligibly affected by the mechanical mode of the mirror while it has a significant effect in the superradiant phase. We have observed that the eigenvalues and the spectra both exhibit distinct features that can be identified with the photonic, atomic and phononic branches. In the fluorescence spectra, we further observe an asymmetric coherent energy exchange between the three degrees of freedom of the system in the superradiant phase arising as a result of optomechanical interaction and Bloch-siegert shift.

To ensure smooth and reliable operations of battery systems,reliable prognosis with accurate prediction of state of Health of lithium ion batteries is of utmost ***,battery degradation is a complex challenge involving many electrochemical reactions at anode,separator,cathode and electrolyte/electrode ***,there is significant effect of the operating conditions on the battery *** machine learning tech-niques have been applied to estimate the capacity and state of Health of lithium ion batteries to ensure reliable operation and timely *** this paper,we study the Gaussian Process Regression(GPR)and support Vector Machine(sVM)model-based approaches in estimating the capacity and state of Health of ***-tery capacity and state of Health estimations are carried out using GPR and sVM models and the predictions comparatively studied for accuracy based on RMsE *** prediction accuracy is further compared with re-spect to single sensor and multi sensor ***,a combined multi battery data set model is used to improve the prediction *** the data of multiple batteries with similar operating conditions for training a model resulted in higher prediction accuracy.

A four parameter cubic equation of state with temperature dependent covolume parameter

A four-parameter, Ghoderao–Dalvi–Narayan 2 cubic equation of state(GDN2 CEOs), is presented which incorporates the following: 1. The experimental value of the critical compressibility factor has been used as a fixed input parameter for calculations;2. All the parameters(a, b, c, d) of CEOs are temperature dependent functions in the subcritical region and are temperature independent functions in the supercritical region and;3. A new α function is introduced with two compound specific parameters which are estimated by matching saturated vapor pressure at two fixed temperature points Tr= 0.5, 0.7. Our formalism enables us to cast three of the four parameters of the CEOs as a function of the remaining parameter. The proposed CEOs is used to predict properties of 334 pure compounds, including saturated vapor pressure and liquid density, compressed liquid density, heat capacities at the constant pressure and volume, enthalpy of vaporization, sound velocity. To calculate thermodynamic properties of a pure compound, the present CEOs require the critical temperature, the critical pressure, the Pitzer’s acentric factor, the critical compressibility factor, and two parameters of the alpha function. The saturated liquid density predictions for pure fluids are very accurate when compared with GDN1(Ghoderao–Dalvi–Narayan 1),MPR(Modified Peng–Robinson), and PT(Patel–Teja) equations of state. Unlike MPR EOs, the proposed temperature dependent covolume parameter b in the present work satisfies all the constraints mentioned in the literature to avoid thermodynamic inconsistencies at the extreme temperature and pressure. Using van der Waals one-fluid mixing rule, the present CEOs is further used to predict bubble pressure and the vapor mole fraction of binary mixtures.

Extreme ultraviolet and x-ray transition wavelengths in Rb XXIV

Energy levels, radiative rates, oscillator strengths and line strengths are reported for transitions among the lowest 97 levels of the（1s22s22p6） 3s23p2, 3s23p3 d, 3s3p3, 3p4, 3s3p23 d, and 3s23d2 configurations of Rb XXIV. A multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock（MCDF） method is adopted for the calculations. Radiative rates, oscillator strengths, and line strengths are provided for all electric dipole（E1）, magnetic dipole（M1）, electric quadrupole（E2）, and magnetic quadrupole（M2）transitions from the ground level to all 97 levels, although calculations are performed for a much larger number of *** achieve the accuracy of the data, comparisons are provided with similar data obtained from the Flexible Atomic Code（FAC） and also with the available theoretical and experimental results. Our energy levels are found to be accurate to better than 1.2%. Wavelengths calculated are found to lie in EUV（extreme ultraviolet） and x-ray regions. Additionally, lifetimes for all 97 levels are obtained for the first time.

The influence of stocking levels,clone,fertilization,and weed control on surface CO_(2)efflux in a mid-rotation Pinus radiata *** plantation in Canterbury,New Zealand

silvicultural practices applied in managed forest plantations may help counteract the effects of climate change by influencing soil surface CO_(2)efflux(Fs).Understanding the effects of silvicultural practices on Fs will provide unbiased estimates of carbon fluxes and allow better silvicultural decisions for carbon ***,we assessed how Fs differed seasonally across silvicultural practices(i.e.,stocking levels,clone,fertilization and weed control treatments)and evaluated the effects of soil temperature(Ts)and soil volumetric water content(θv)on Fs across these practices for a mid-rotation(14 year-old)Pinus radiata plantation in the Canterbury region of New *** were significant differences in Fs(pseasons,three levels of stocking,and five *** effects of fertilization and weed control applied 12 years previously on Fs were *** estimate of Fs(mean±1 standard deviation)from the study site was 22.7±7.1 t ha^(-1)a^(-1)in the form of CO_(2)(6.2±2.1 t ha^(-1)a^(-1)in the form of C).Fs values were consistently higher in plots with 1250 stems ha^(-1)compared to 2500 stems ha^(-1),which may be related to a strong soil resource limitation because of the close spacing in the latter *** differences in Fs across clones suggest that variations in carbon partitioning might explain their growth *** treatments influenced Fs response to soil temperature(psulting in models explaining 28-49%of the total variance in *** findings provide insights into how silvicultural management decisions may impact Fs in mid-rotation radiata pine plantations,contributing towards developing more precise and unbiased plantation carbon budgets.
