Establishing the role of detoxifying enzymes in field-evolved resistance to various insecticides in the brown planthopper （Nilaparvata lugens） in south India

The brown planthopper （BPH）, Nilaparvata lugens （stal）, is one of the major pests of rice throughout Asia. Extensive use of insecticides for suppressing N. lugens has resulted in the development of insecticide resistance leading to frequent control failures in the field. The aim of the present study was to evaluate resistance in the field populations of N. lugens from major rice growing states of south India to various insecticides. We also determined the activity of detoxifying enzymes （esterases [EsTs], glutathione s- transferases [GsTs], and mixed-fimction oxidases [MFOs]）. Moderate levels of resistance were detected in the field populations to acephate, thiamethoxam and buprofezin （resistance factors 1.05-20.92 fold, 4.52-14.99 fold, and 1.00-18.09 fold, respectively） as compared with susceptible strain while there were low levels of resistance to imidacloprid （resistance factor 1.23-6.70 fold） and complete sensitivity to etofenoprox （resistance factor 1.05- 1.66 fold）. EsT activities in the field populations were 1.06 to 3.09 times higher than the susceptible strain while for GsT and MFO the ratios varied from 1.29 to 3.41 and 1.03 to 1.76, respectively. The EsT activity was found to be correlated to acephate resistance （r = 0.999, P ≥ 0.001）. The high selection pressure of organophosphate, neonicotinoid, and insect growth regulator （IGR） in the field is likely to be contributing for resistance in BPH to multiple insecticides, leading to control failures. The results obtained will be beneficial to IPM recommendations for the use of effective insecticides against BPH.

Objective:To investigate the presence of statistically significant geographical clusters of tuberculosis(TB) using Geographical Information system and spatial scan statistics in Dehradun, ***:The spatial scan statistic implemented with a software program,saTscan v6.1, was used to test the presence of statistically significant spatial clusters of TB and to identify their approximate locations(Psters and Psecondary clusters). Conclusions:There is sufficient evidence about the existence of statistically significant TB clusters in seven wards of Dehradun,*** purely spatial scan statistics methodology used in this study has a potential use in surveillance of TB for detecting the true clusters of the disease.

Multi-polarized Radarsat-2 satellite sensor in assessing forest vigor from above ground biomass

Accurate estimates of forest biomass are increasingly important in relation to sequestration of carbon by forest trees. satellite remote sensing is a useful tool for biomass estimation and monitoring of forest ecological processes. Microwave synthetic aperture radar （sAR） can increase the accuracy of estimations of forest biomass in comparison to optical remote sensing, due to the unique capacities of sAR, including high penetrability, volumetric scattering, interaction with surface roughness, and dielectric property. We studied the potential of multi-polarized C-band Radarsat-2, a sAR technology, with HH, HV and VV polarization for estimating biomass of moist tropical Indian forest. Backscatter values are correlated with fieldbased biomass values and axe regressed to generate models for estimating biomass. HH polarization provided maximum information regarding tree biomass. A coefficient of determination of 0.49 was calculated for HH polarized C-band image with in situ measurements. An exponential model was proved to be best suited for estimating forest biomass. Correlation of 0.62 and RMsE of 24.6 t ha-1 were calculated for the relationship between estimated and predicted biomass values for the best fit model. The aver- age absolute accuracy of the model was 61%, while Willmott＇s index of agreement was 0.87. Results suggest that most of the biomass of the area ranged within 70 t ha-1 a probably due to the saturation of C-band around 60-70 t ha-1 for tropical forests.

Tuning the structural and Optical Properties of sILAR-Deposited Cu_2O Films Through Zn Doping

Undoped and Zn-doped Cu2O films were deposited onto glass substrates using successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction（sILAR） technique with different Zn doping levels（0, 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 wt%）. The structural,optical, and surface morphological studies were carried out and reported. The structural study revealed that the crystalline quality is gradually enhanced up to 5 wt% of Zn doping level, and then quality begins to degrade for further increase in doping level. Moreover, the preferential orientation changes from（111） to（110） for the highest doping level were examined. Optical study shows that the transmittance（65%） and optical band gap values are maximum（2.41 e V） when the Zn doping level is at 5 wt%. The photoluminescence study confirms the presence of various defects in the Cu2O matrix and also the variation obtained in the optical band gap from the transmittance data. sEM images revealed the annealinginduced changes in the surface morphology of the films.

An Attention Based Neural Architecture for Arrhythmia Detection and Classification from ECG signals

固化/稳定化是重金属污染土治理的最常用方法,但因为As(Ⅲ)的迁移性强,固化处理As(Ⅲ)污染土的效果欠佳。提出了As(Ⅲ)污染土的预氧化—稳定化—固化联合修复方法,首先利用Fenton试剂将土中As(Ⅲ)氧化为迁移性弱的As(Ⅴ),再用FeCl3稳定As(Ⅴ),最后通过水泥固化进一步固定As(Ⅴ)。通过无侧限抗压强度试验、毒性浸出试验(TCLP)、合成沉降浸出试验(sPLP)、pH测试、连续萃取试验和光谱分析研究了联合修复的效果和机理。结果表明,Fenton预氧化能够有效提高修复效率,当Fe与As的摩尔比为1︰1、添加10%水泥时,TCLP和sPLP得到As的浸出毒性分别低至2.51,1.33mg/L,修复效率分别高达97.46%,98.53%;FeCl3能促进水泥的水化并改善固化体的孔隙结构,提高固化体的强度;修复方法可将As转化为更稳定的形态,有效降低As的潜在环境风险;大多数As可以与铁的水合氧化物结合而被固定,但随着水泥用量增加pH增加,Fe-As的结合减弱,导致部分As释放;光谱分析结果表明,联合修复可以将土中92.5%的As(Ⅲ)转化为As(Ⅴ),并通过水化硅酸钙的固封和钙矾石的离子交换将As固定。该研究为As(Ⅲ)污染土的高效修复提供了新的视角。

Passive diffusion sampling of sulfur dioxide in India: Impact assessment on arid areas

Environmental constraints have drastically limited options of sustainable developmentand have severely offset many developmental schemes. In this paper, possibilities of acidic depo-sition, as a counter measure of desertification, are analyzed. seasonal data of ambient sulfur di-oxide, pH of rain water and soil acidity are collected for over an year and analyzed. Arid environ-ment of surrounding areas of Delhi is considered and analyzed. Though ambient sulfur depositionis well below critical level, it might not be truly indicative of plant survival in arid areas. Results maybe useful in arid area afforestation, and polluting industries relocation, which holds tremendouspotential vis-a-vis sustainable development.
