Climate change and finger millet: Perception, trend and impact on yield in different ecological regions in Central Nepal

The views of local people on climate change along different ecological regions are relatively unexplored in Nepal. This study was conducted in 13 villages in central Nepal at different altitudes to document the views of small holder farmers and compare their perception with trends of climatic variables, finger millet yield, natural disasters, plant phenology(flowering and fruiting), status of forest and wild life, as well as the spread of diseases and pests. Analysis on the climatic data of stations for 36-41 years between 1975 and 2016 showed significant increases in the minimum temperature in lower tropical climatic region(subtropical climatic region(500-2000 m) and temperate climatic region(2000-3000 m) by 0.01, 0.026 and 0.054℃/year, respectively, and an increase of maximum temperature by 0.008, 0.018, and 0.019℃/year, respectively. Rainfall showed a strongly significant decreasing trend in all elevation regions. This result matches with the views of respondents except 38% respondent from temperate climatic region. People from the temperate climatic region also mentioned that current onset of snowfall is delayed but amount of snowfall remained the same. From the documented records, except events of wild fire, frequency of natural disasters events have increased in the recent years, which was in harmony with the views of local people. Multi-linear regression analysis showed that contribution of climatic variables on finger millet yield in lower tropical climatic region and upper tropical to subtropical regions was 23% and 57.3%, respectively, which was supported by increasing trend on average growing degree day(GDD) temperature at the rate of 0.01℃ in upper tropical to subtropical region and 0.007℃ in lower tropical climatic region yearly. Finger millet yield has been increasing at the rate of 7.39 and 36.9 kg/ha yearly in lower tropical climatic region and upper tropical to subtropical climatic region, respectively. Convective heat transfer of nanofluids with correlations

To investigate the convective heat transfer of nanofluids, experiments were performed using silver-water nanofluids under laminar, transition and turbulent flow regimes in a horizontal 4.3 mm inner-diameter tube-in-tube counter-current heat transfer test section. The volume concentration of the nanoparticles varied from 0.3% to 0.9% in steps of 0.3%, and the effects of thermo-physical properties, inlet temperature, volume concentration, and mass flow rate on heat transfer coefficient were investigated. Experiments showed that the suspended nanoparticles remarkably increased the convective heat transfer coefficient, by as much as 28.7% and 69.3% for 0.3% and 0.9% of silver content, respectively. Based on the experimental results a correlation was developed to predict the Nusselt number of the silver-water nanofluid, with ＋10% agreement between experiments and prediction.

Dynamic stability of axially accelerating viscoelastic plates with longitudinally varying tensions

The dynamic stability of axially accelerating plates is investigated. Longitudi- nally varying tensions due to the acceleration and nonhomogeneous boundary conditions are highlighted. A model of the plate combined with viscoelasticity is applied. In the viscoelastic constitutive relationship, the material derivative is used to take the place of the partial time derivative. Analytical and numerical methods are used to investigate summation and principal parametric resonances, respectively. By use of linear models for the transverse behavior in the small displacement regime, the plate is confined by a viscous damping force. The generalized Hamilton principle is used to derive the govern- ing equations, the initial conditions, and the boundary conditions of the coupled planar vibration. The solvability conditions are established by directly using the method of mul- tiple scales. The Routh-Hurwitz criterion is used to obtain the necessary and sufficient condition of the stability. Numerical examples are given to show the effects of related parameters on the stability boundaries. The validity of longitudinally varying tensions and nonhomogeneous boundary conditions is highlighted by comparing the results of the method of multiple scales with those of a differential quadrature scheme.

Excitations of optomechanically driven Bose Einstein condensates in a cavity: Photodetection measurements

We present a detailed study to analyze the Dicke quantum phase transition within the thermodynamic limit for an optomechanically driven Bose-Einstein condensate in a cavity. The photodetection-based quantum optical measurements have been performed to study the dynamics and excitations of this optomechanical Dicke system. For this, we discuss the eigenvalue analysis, fluorescence spectrum and the homodyne spectrum of the system. It has been shown that the normal phase is negligibly affected by the mechanical mode of the mirror while it has a significant effect in the superradiant phase. We have observed that the eigenvalues and the spectra both exhibit distinct features that can be identified with the photonic, atomic and phononic branches. In the fluorescence spectra, we further observe an asymmetric coherent energy exchange between the three degrees of freedom of the system in the superradiant phase arising as a result of optomechanical interaction and Bloch-siegert shift.

The advancements in Mobile Ad-hoc Network(MANET)are suitable to wide applications,which involve military applications,civilian domains,and disaster recovery *** is assumed that the nodes present in the routing protocols of MANETs are cooperative and *** assumption makes MANET more prone to manipulation and interception,which generates several possibilities of different suspicious attacks,such as Denial of service(Dos)***,security is considered as an important parameter as the network is fond of suspicious *** paper addresses the security issues by proposing an optimization algorithm,named Jaya Cuckoo search(JCs)algorithm,which is the combination of Jaya algorithm and Cuckoo search(Cs)algorithm for initiating secure route among the MANET nodes so that the path attained is feasible and *** proposed JCs algorithm uses a fitness function,which considers a multiobjective function using parameters,such as distance,link lifetime,delay,energy,trust,along with the reputation factor to select a secured *** JCs algorithm shows maximum performance with energy,throughput,and PDR values as 27.826 J,0.554,and 0.628,respectively.

Partial sine wave tracking dual mode control topology for a single-phase transformerless photovoltaic system

A unique high efficiency photovoltaic(PV)system is presented. It uses partial sine wave tracking for a pulse-width modulation(PWM) boost converter as well as a full-bridge inverter. The boost converter and full-bridge inverter are connected via a compact intermediate film capacitor(i.e. non-smoothing DC link stage). PWM switching is activated by a dual mode control technique. In the proposed topology, simultaneous switching of both power conversion stages is avoided and therefore this increases the power conversion efficiency. The distinctive operating principles of these two power processing stages are discussed and analyzed with the experimental results for single-phase loading of the PV system.

A four parameter cubic equation of state with temperature dependent covolume parameter

A four-parameter, Ghoderao–Dalvi–Narayan 2 cubic equation of state(GDN2 CEOs), is presented which incorporates the following: 1. The experimental value of the critical compressibility factor has been used as a fixed input parameter for calculations;2. All the parameters(a, b, c, d) of CEOs are temperature dependent functions in the subcritical region and are temperature independent functions in the supercritical region and;3. A new α function is introduced with two compound specific parameters which are estimated by matching saturated vapor pressure at two fixed temperature points Tr= 0.5, 0.7. Our formalism enables us to cast three of the four parameters of the CEOs as a function of the remaining parameter. The proposed CEOs is used to predict properties of 334 pure compounds, including saturated vapor pressure and liquid density, compressed liquid density, heat capacities at the constant pressure and volume, enthalpy of vaporization, sound velocity. To calculate thermodynamic properties of a pure compound, the present CEOs require the critical temperature, the critical pressure, the Pitzer’s acentric factor, the critical compressibility factor, and two parameters of the alpha function. The saturated liquid density predictions for pure fluids are very accurate when compared with GDN1(Ghoderao–Dalvi–Narayan 1),MPR(Modified Peng–Robinson), and PT(Patel–Teja) equations of state. Unlike MPR EOs, the proposed temperature dependent covolume parameter b in the present work satisfies all the constraints mentioned in the literature to avoid thermodynamic inconsistencies at the extreme temperature and pressure. Using van der Waals one-fluid mixing rule, the present CEOs is further used to predict bubble pressure and the vapor mole fraction of binary mixtures.

Extreme ultraviolet and x-ray transition wavelengths in Rb XXIV

Energy levels, radiative rates, oscillator strengths and line strengths are reported for transitions among the lowest 97 levels of the（1s22s22p6） 3s23p2, 3s23p3 d, 3s3p3, 3p4, 3s3p23 d, and 3s23d2 configurations of Rb XXIV. A multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock（MCDF） method is adopted for the calculations. Radiative rates, oscillator strengths, and line strengths are provided for all electric dipole（E1）, magnetic dipole（M1）, electric quadrupole（E2）, and magnetic quadrupole（M2）transitions from the ground level to all 97 levels, although calculations are performed for a much larger number of *** achieve the accuracy of the data, comparisons are provided with similar data obtained from the Flexible Atomic Code（FAC） and also with the available theoretical and experimental results. Our energy levels are found to be accurate to better than 1.2%. Wavelengths calculated are found to lie in EUV（extreme ultraviolet） and x-ray regions. Additionally, lifetimes for all 97 levels are obtained for the first time.

An alternative treatment process for upgrade of petroleum refinery wastewater using electrocoagulation

An electrocoagulation treatment process was developed for treatment and upgrade of petroleum refinery effluent （wastewater）, instead of the conventional methods, which can consume higher amounts of chemicals and produce larger amounts of sludge. The effect of the operation parameters, such as current density, initial pH, anode material, anode dissolution, energy consumption and electrolysis time, on treatment efficiency was investigated. The experimental results showed that the effluent can be effectively treated under optimal conditions. Fourier transform infrared （FTIR） analysis of the effluent, and scanning electron microscopy （sEM） coupled with energy dispersive analysis of X-rays （EDAX） of the sludge produced, revealed that the unwanted pollutants can be eliminated. The electrocoagulation treatment process was assessed by using the removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand （COD）, total suspended solids （Tss）, and the general physicochemical characteristics of wastewater, and the results showed that the electrocoagulation is an efficient process for recycling of petroleum wastewater; it is faster and provides better quality of treated water than the conventional methods.
