Hydrated cement is one of the complex composite systems due to the presence of multi-scale phases with varying *** silicate hydrate,which is the principal binder phase in the hydrated cement,is responsible for the stiffness,strength,and durability of Portland cement *** understand the mechanical and durability behavior of concrete,it is important to investigate the interactions of hydrated cement phases with other materials at the *** this regard,the molecular simulation of cement-based materials is an effective approach to study the properties and interactions of the cement system at the fundamental ***,many studies have been published regarding atomistic simulations to investigate the cement phases to define/explain the microscopic physical and chemical properties,thereby improving the macroscopic performance of hardened *** research in molecular simulation of cementitious systems involves researchers with multidisciplinary backgrounds,mainly in two areas:(1)cement chemistry,where the hydration reactions govern most of the chemical and physical properties at the atomic scale;and(2)computational materials science and engineering,where the bottom-up approach is *** latter approach is still in its infancy,and as such,a study of the prevailing knowledge is useful,namely through an exhaustive literature *** state-of-theart report provides a comprehensive survey on studies that were conducted in this area and cites the important findings.

Prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections and its relationship with socio-demographics and hygienic habits among male primary schoolchildren in Al-Ahsa,Saudi Arabia

Objective:To investigate the prevalence of different intestinal parasitic infections among male primary schoolchildren in Al-Ahsa,Saudi Arabia,and to explore the possible relative socioeconomic, environmental and behavioural sanitary ***:A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed.A total of 1 289 male students aged from 7 to 12 years were selected randomly from 20 urban and 12 rural primary schools by multistage sampling method. Neuroprotection by misoprostol against rotenone-induced neurotoxicity in rat brain

Objective: To investigate the effect of the prostaglandin E1 analogue misoprostol on oxidative stress and neurodegeration caused by subcutaneous rotenone administration in rats. Methods:Rotenone was administered in a dose of 1.5 mg/kg every other day for 2 weeks. Starting from the 1 st day of rotenone injection, rats were subcutaneously treated with misoprostol at doses of10, 100 or 1 000 μg/kg. Rats were evaluated for brain lipid peroxidation(malondialdehyde:MDA), reduced glutathione(GSH), nitric oxide(NO) levels, and paraoxonase-1(PON-1) *** concentrations of the anti-apoptotic protein B cell/lymphoma-2(Bcl-2) were determined in the striatum. Histopathologic examination and the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS) in the cerebral cortex and striatum were also performed. Results: Compared with the vehicle-treated group, rotenone caused a significant increase in brain lipid proxidation(MDA)by 61%(P<0.05) accompanied by an increase in NO by 73.1%(P<0.05) and a decrease in GSH concentration by 29.4%(P<0.05). In addition, brain PON-1 activity significantly decreased by63.0%(P<0.05) and striatal Bcl-2 significantly decreased by 27.9%(P<0.05) with respect to the corresponding control value. Brain sections from rotenone treated rats showed extensive dark pyknotic and apoptotic nuclei in neurons, shrunken cytoplasm and perineuronal *** also caused pronounced expression of iNOS in the cerebral cortex and *** with misoprostol at doses of 100 and 1 000 μg/kg resulted in decreased brain MDA(by 16.5%-23.0%)(P<0.05) and NO levels(by 37.1%-40.7%)(P<0.05) and increased GSH concentrations(by 18.8%-30.1%)(P<0.05). PON-1 activity was significantly increased by80.0%-114.8%(P<0.05) by misoprostol at 100 and 1 000 μg/kg, respectively. In addition,misoprostol treatment restored striatal Bcl-2 concentrations to its normal value. Investigation of physico-chemical properties and microbial community during poultry manure co-composting process

Co-composting of poultry manure and rubber wood sawdust was performed with the ratio of 2：1（V/V） for a period of 60 days. An investigation was carried out to study the extracellular enzymatic activities and structural degradation utilizing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy（FT-IR）, thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis（TG/DTA）and scanning electron microscopy（SEM）. The microbial succession was also determined by using denaturing gel gradient electrophoresis（DGGE）. The compost was able to reach its highest temperature of 71°C at day 3 and stabilized between 30 and 40°C for 8 ***, FPase and β-glucosidase acted synergistically in order to degrade the cellulosic substrate. The xylanase activities increased gradually during the composting and reached the peak value of 11.637 U/g on day 35, followed by a sharp decline. Both Li P and Mn P activities reached their peak values on day 35 with 0.431 and 0.132 U/g respectively. The FT-IR spectra revealed an increase in aromaticity and a decrease in aliphatic compounds such as carbohydrates as decomposition proceeded. TGA/DTG data exhibited significant changes in weight loss in compost samples, indicating degradation of organic matter. SEM micrographs showed higher amounts of parenchyma exposed on the surface of rubber wood sawdust at day 60, showing significant degradation. DGGE and 16 S r DNA analyses showed that Burkholderia sp., Pandoraea sp., and Pseudomonas sp. were present throughout the composting process. Ornithinibacillus sp. and Castellaniella ginsengisoli were only found in the initial stage of the composting, while different strains of Burkholderia sp. also occurred in the later stage of composting.

Nigella sativa oil as a treatment for gingivitis: A randomized active-control trial

Objective: To assess the clinical anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial efficacy of Nigella sativa oil compared with chlorhexidine in patients with gingivitis. Methods: A double-blind, randomized clinical trial was conducted in patients having chronic generalized gingivitis. Patients were randomly assigned to receive Nigella sativa oil(n=18) or chlorhexidine(n=19). The following assessments were made on day 0 and day 15: plaque index, gingival index, gingival IL-6 and IL-18 levels were measured using ELISA, plaque colony-forming units, and alpha-hemolytic Streptococcus strains. Data were analyzed using parametric and non-parametric tests and Fisher’s exact ***: Both interventions reduced plaque index and gingival index scores(P0.05). The post-intervention plaque index and gingival index scores and inflammatory cytokine levels between the two groups were not significantly different. Both interventions caused a significant reduction in the plaque colony-forming units(P<0.000 1), reducing pathogenic bacteria: Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus sanguinis, and Streptococcus parasanguinis in the chlorhexidine group(50%)(P=0.103 1), and the Nigella sativa oil group(20%)(P=0.739 5). Conclusions: Nigella sativa oil had anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities, reducing biofilm formation and disrupting the colonization of pathogenic bacteria essential for the progression of periodontal disease. Nigella sativa oil could offer an alternative therapy for treating gingivitis and may prevent associated systemic diseases and improve overall health outcomes.

Changes in corneal biomechanics and intraocular pressure following Femto-LASIK using Goldman applanation tonometry and ocular response analyzer

AIM:To compare intraocular pressure(IOP)measurements before and after laser in situ keratomileusis(LASIK)with a femtosecond laser for flap creation using ocular response analyzer(ORA)and Goldmann applanation tonometry,and to identify factors that may influence the preoperative and postoperative ***:A prospective study conducted on myopic patients who underwent LASIK using a femtosecond laser for flap *** patients were evaluated preoperatively,6 wk and 3 mo postoperatively for manifest refraction(MR),keratometric(K)readings and central corneal thickness(CCT)using a scheimpflug-based *** resistance factor(CRF),corneal hysteresis(CH),Goldmann correlated IOP(IOPg)and corneal compensated IOP(IOPcc)were measured using ORA besides IOP assessment by Goldman applanation tonometry(GAT).RESULTS:There was a statistically significant decrease in measures of IOPg by 3.35±0.83 mm Hg,followed by GAT which decreased by 2.2±0.44 mm Hg,and the least affected by operation was IOPcc which decreased only by 0.87±0.1 mm Hg after 6 *** 3 mo follow up there was a statistically significant decrease in IOPcc which decreased only by 0.76±0.4 mm Hg,followed by IOP GAT by 1.6±0.5 mm Hg,and the most affected by operation was IOPg which decreased by 2.3±0.3 mm ***,there was a statistically significant decrease in CH and CRF after 6 wk and 3 *** 3 mo,the preoperative MR and preoperative GAT were prominent significant predictors of the postoperative GAT *** prediction equation was ***:IOP measurements and corneal biomechanical factors reduce significantly after LASIK with a femtosecond laser for flap *** IOPcc values are less influenced by changes in corneal properties than IOPg and GAT,indicating that IOPcc may provide the most reliable measurement of IOP after this procedure.

Investigation of climate change impacts on food security has become a global hot *** so,efforts to mitigate these issues in arid regions have been ***,in this paper,further research is discussed based on data obtained from various crop and climate *** DSSATcrop models(CMs)(CERESWheat and N-Wheat)were calibrated with two wheat cultivars(Gemiza9 and Misr1).A baseline simulation(1981-2010)was compared with different scenarios of simulations using three Global Climate Models(GCMs)for the 2030s,2050s and *** impacts of climate change were assessed using the GCMs and CMs under the high emission Representative Concentration Pathway(RCP8.5).Results predicted decreased wheat grain yields by a mean of 8.7%,11.4%and 13.2%in the 2030s,2050s and 2080s,respectively,relative to the baseline *** impacts of climatic change are probable,despite some uncertainties within the GCMs(i.e.,2.1%,5.0%and 8.0%)and CMs(i.e.,2.2%,6.0%and 9.2%).Changing the planting date with a scenario of plus or minus 5 or 10 days from the common practice was assessed as a potentially effective adaptation option,which may partially offset the negative impacts of climate *** the sowing date by 10 days(from 20 November to 30 November)proved the optimum scenario and decreased further reduction in wheat yields resulting from climate change to 5.2%,6.8%and 8.5%in the 2030s,2050s and 2080s,respectively,compared with the 20 November *** planting 5-days earlier scenario showed a decreased impact on climate change ***,the 10-days early planting scenario increased yield reduction under projected climate *** cultivar Misr1 was more resistant to rising temperature than *** the negative impacts of projected climate change on wheat production,water use efficiency would slightly *** ensemble of multi-model estimated impacts and adaptation uncertainties of climate change can assist decision-makers in planning clima

BACKGROUND Little is known about inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)burden and its impact on bone mineral density(BMD)among adult patients in Saudi *** the best of our knowledge,our study is the only study to give an update about this health problem in adult Saudi patients with *** is a great risk factor for reduced BMD due to its associated chronic inflammation,malabsorption,weight loss and medication side ***,screening for reduced BMD among patients with IBD is of utmost importance to curb and control anticipated morbidity and mortality among those *** To assess the relationship between IBD and BMD in a sample of adult Saudi patients with *** Ninety adult patients with IBD-62 Crohn’s disease(CD)and 28 ulcerative colitis(UC)-were recruited from King Fahad Specialist Hospital gastroenterology clinics in Buraidah,*** enrolled patients were interviewed for their demographic information and for IBD-and BMD-related clinical *** patients had the necessary laboratory markers and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scans to evaluate their BMD *** were divided into two groups(CD and UC)to explore their clinical characteristics and possible risk factors for reduced *** The CD group was significantly more prone to osteopenia and osteoporosis compared to the UC group;44%of the CD patients had normal BMD,19%had osteopenia,and 37%had osteoporosis,while 78%of the UC patients had normal BMD,7%had osteopenia,and 25%had osteoporosis(P value<0.05).In the CD group,the lowest t-score showed a statistically significant correlation with body mass index(BMI)(r=0.45,P<0.001),lumbar z-score(r=0.77,P<0.05)and femur z-score(r=0.85,P<0.05).In the UC group,the lowest t-score showed only statistically significant correlation with the lumbar z-score(r=0.82,P<0.05)and femur z-score(r=0.80,P<0.05).The ROC-curve showed that low BMI could predict the lowest t-score in the CD group with the best cut-off value at≤23.43(m/kg2);area

Hydrocarbon-source correlation in the Obayied sub-basin， north Western Desert， Egypt: controls on generation of natural gas and light crude hydrocarbon blend

Obayied sub-basin provides one-third of the annual natural gas production in the Egyptian Western Desert. The origin of the Obayied hydrocarbons are however poorly constrained. In this study， the molecular biomarkers of the Obayied hydrocarbon blend were studied to infer on their origin and generation mechanism. API values are in the range of (41.3°-53.7°) reflecting post-mature hydrocarbons. The molecular biomarkers suggest a generation of Obayied crude from clay-rich fluvio-deltaic source rocks. Age- and maturity-relevant biomarkers (e.g. Ts/Tm trisnorhopanes and methylphenanthrene indices) reflect a successive expulsion of the Obayied crudes from mature Jurassic rocks (> 1%Ro). Biological markers correlate perfectly with those of the Jurassic Khatatba shale and coal extracts attesting. Additionally， the Obayied gases are wet， thermogenic and have been derived from a mature (1.3%-2%Ro) type III kerogen. The studied gases display compositional characteristics of mixed coal- and oil-type gases， and were therefore derived via primary cracking of the Khatatba coal as well as secondary cracking of the light liquid crudes. The present study clarifies the controls on the geochemical processes responsible for the accumulation of liquid and gas hydrocarbon mix in the deep as well as shallow inverted rift basins of the north Western Desert， Egypt.
