Topographic characteristics of keratoconus among a sample of Jordanian patients

· AIM: To identify topographic characteristics of keratoconus in a Jordanian sample.· METHODS: This study characterized 210 corneas affected with keratoconus presenting to Jordan University Hospital. Patients were diagnosed based on clinical examinations and Pentacam imaging. Eyes of males(n =101) were of a similar proportion to females(n =109). All of the 111 patients were affected *** ranged between 13 and 44 y with a mean age of25.2y.· RESULTS: Results revealed significant differences between males and females at the level of the flat curvature power, basement membrane thickness and size of the anterior chamber. Eyes were arranged in three groups based on severity levels: mild, moderate and severe determined by the mean curvature power(Km).Results show that the flat(K1) and steep(K2) curvature powers, corneal asphericity coefficient(QV), thinnest point, pachy apex and basement membrane thickness are significantly different among the three groups, but not the corneal and anterior chamber *** analyses, based on sagittal maps, show no differences in keratometric values between eyes with different sagittal patterns except for the vertical location of the pachy apex relative to the pupil center and the thinnest point. Eyes with the island front elevation map are significantly more affected than eyes with the U shape and the ridge pattern.· CONCLUSION: All keratometric values measured except for corneal and anterior chamber volumes vary significantly with disease severity. The vertical pachy apex location correlates well with severity levels while the horizontal location seems to have no effect. Ourstudy also indicates that front elevation maps may be a better predictor of the severity of keratoconus than sagittal maps.

Ferrara ring segments implantation for treating keratoconus

AIM: To investigate the efficacy of Ferrara rings (FR) implantation in the treatment of ***: It was a retrospective case series descriptive study. The sample was comprised of 50 patients 79 eyes diagnosed with progressive keratoconus. This included 24 (48%) males and 26 (52%) females between the age of 13 and 44 years. All participants underwent surgical implantation of FR in the period between January 2009 and September 2010 at Jordan University Hospital. Thorough ophthalmologic examinations were applied to measure vital variables for each pathological condition before and after surgery. RESULTS: Findings indicated an overall significant postoperative improvement in both uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and best spectacle corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) throughout follow up visits. Moreover, results illustrated a significant decrease in spherical equivalent (SE) and keratometric readings (lower, higher and the average). CONCLUSION: Surgical intervention strategies are being frequently developed to meet the needs of patients with keratoconus. The implantation of Ferrara rings has proven to be a safe and feasible alternative procedure for the treatment of mild-moderate keratoconus especially for patients with contact lenses intolerance. We have found that this procedure has improved visual outcomes in all eyes studied. Nevertheless, further research is needed to investigate long term outcomes.

An attractive analytical technique for coupled system of fractional partial differential equations in shallow water waves with conformable derivative

Mathematical simulation of nonlinear physical and abstract systems is a very vital process for predicting the solution behavior of fractional partial differential equations(FPDEs)corresponding to different applications in science and engineering. In this paper, an attractive reliable analytical technique, the conformable residual power series, is implemented for constructing approximate series solutions for a class of nonlinear coupled FPDEs arising in fluid mechanics and fluid flow, which are often designed to demonstrate the behavior of weakly nonlinear and long waves and describe the interaction of shallow water waves. In the proposed technique the n-truncated representation is substituted into the original system and it is assumed the(n-1) conformable derivative of the residuum is zero. This allows us to estimate coefficients of truncation and successively add the subordinate terms in the multiple fractional power series with a rapidly convergent form. The influence, capacity, and feasibility of the presented approach are verified by testing some real-world applications. Finally, highlights and some closing comments are attached.

Cervical cancer is screened by pap smear methodology for detection and classification *** smear images of the cervical region are employed to detect and classify the abnormality of cervical *** this paper,we proposed the first system that it ables to classify the pap smear images into a seven classes *** smear images are exploited to design a computer-aided diagnoses system to classify the abnormality in cervical images *** features that have been extracted using ResNet101 are employed to discriminate seven classes of images in Support Vector Machine(SVM)*** success of this proposed system in distinguishing between the levels of normal cases with 100%accuracy and 100%*** top of that,it can distinguish between normal and abnormal cases with an accuracy of 100%.The high level of abnormality is then studied and classified with a high *** the other hand,the low level of abnormality is studied separately and classified into two classes,mild and moderate dysplasia,with∼92%*** proposed system is a built-in cascading manner with five models of polynomial(SVM)*** overall accuracy in training for all cases is 100%,while the overall test for all seven classes is around 92%in the test phase and overall accuracy reaches 97.3%.The proposed system facilitates the process of detection and classification of cervical cells in pap smear images and leads to early diagnosis of cervical cancer,which may lead to an increase in the survival rate in women.

An Enhanced Automatic Arabic Essay Scoring System Based on Machine Learning Algorithms

Despite the extensive effort to improve intelligent educational tools for smart learning environments,automatic Arabic essay scoring remains a big research *** nature of the writing style of the Arabic language makes the problem even more *** study designs,implements,and evaluates an automatic Arabic essay scoring *** proposed system starts with pre-processing the student answer and model answer dataset using data cleaning and natural language processing ***,it comprises two main components:the grading engine and the adaptive fusion *** grading engine employs string-based and corpus-based similarity algorithms *** that,the adaptive fusion engine aims to prepare students’scores to be delivered to different feature selection algorithms,such as Recursive Feature Elimination and ***,some machine learning algorithms such as Decision Tree,Random Forest,Adaboost,Lasso,Bagging,and K-Nearest Neighbor are employed to improve the suggested system’s *** experimental results in the grading engine showed that Extracting DIStributionally similar words using the CO-occurrences similarity measure achieved the best correlation ***,in the adaptive fusion engine,the Random Forest algorithm outperforms all other machine learning algorithms using the(80%–20%)splitting method on the original *** achieves 91.30%,94.20%,0.023,0.106,and 0.153 in terms of Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient,Willmot’s Index of Agreement,Mean Square Error,Mean Absolute Error,and Root Mean Square Error metrics,respectively.

BACKGROUND Picky eating is a commonly observed behavior among children globally,negatively impacting their physical and mental *** common characteristics distinguish peaky eaters,including food selectivity,food neophobia,and food avoidance,there is no clear definition to assess this *** to the unavailability of data regarding picky eating,it wasn’t easy to estimate its *** To develop a regional protocol to help healthcare professionals identify and manage mild and moderate picky eating *** A virtual roundtable discussion was held in April 2021 to gather the opinions of seven pediatricians and two pediatric dietitians from eight Middle Eastern countries who had great experience in the management of picky *** discussion covered different topics,including clearly defining mild and moderate picky eating,identifying the role of diet fortification in these cases,and the possibility of developing a systematic approach to diet *** The panel identified picky eating as consuming an inadequate amount and variety of foods by rejecting familiar and unfamiliar *** of the time,moderate picky eating cases had micronutrient deficiencies with over-or undernutrition;the mild cases only showed inadequate food consumption and/or poor diet *** attention to the organic red flags like growth faltering and development delay and behavioral red flags,including food fixation and anticipatory gagging,will help healthcare professionals evaluate the picky eaters and the caregivers to care for their *** dietary supplementation and commercial food fortification play an important role in picky eating,they were no benefit in the Middle *** The panel agreed that food fortification through a food-first approach and oral nutritional supplements would be the best for Middle Eastern *** recommendations would facilitate identifying and managing picky-eating children in the Middle East.

The ground state properties of the spherical nucleus ^40Ca have been investigated by using constrained spherical Hartree Fock （CSHF） approximation at equilibrium and under high radial compression in a six major shells. The effective baryon-baryon interaction that includes the △（1236） resonance freedom degrees to calculate nuclear properties is used. The nucleon-nucleon （N-N） interaction is based on Reid soft core （RSC） potential. The results of calculations show that much of increase in the nuclear energy generated under compression is used to create the massive △ particles. The number of △ ＇s can be increased to about 2.1% of constituents of nucleus when nuclear density reaches about 1.34 times of normal density. The single particle energy levels are calculated and their behavior under compression is also examined. △ good agreement has been found between current calculations and phenomenological shell model for low lying single-particle spectra. The gap between shells is very clear and L-S coupling become stronger as increasing the static load on the nucleus. The results show a considerable reduction in compressibility when freedom degrees of △＇s are taken into account. It has been found that the total nuclear radial density becomes denser in the interior and less dense in the exterior region of nucleus. The surface of nucleus becomes more and more responsive to compression than outer region.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECMO)has emerged as a vital circulatory life support measure for patients with critical cardiac or pulmonary conditions unresponsive to conventional *** allows blood to be extracted from a patient and introduced to a machine that oxygenates blood and removes carbon *** blood is then reintroduced into the patient’s circulatory *** process makes ECMO essential for treating various medical conditions,both as a standalone therapy and as adjuvant ***-venous(VV)ECMO primarily supports respiratory function and indicates respiratory ***,veno-arterial(VA)ECMO provides hemodynamic and respiratory support and is suitable for cardiac-related *** study reviews recent literature to elucidate the evolving role of ECMO in trauma care,considering its procedural intricacies,indications,contraindications,and associated ***,the use of ECMO in trauma patients,particularly for acute respiratory distress syndrome and cardiogenic shock,has demonstrated promising outcomes despite challenges such as anticoagulation management and complications such as acute kidney injury,bleeding,thrombosis,and *** studies have shown that VV ECMO was associated with significantly higher survival rates than conventional mechanical ventilation,whereas other studies have reported that VA ECMO was associated with lower survival rates than VV *** plays a critical role in managing trauma patients,particularly those with acute respiratory *** research is necessary to explore the full potential of ECMO in trauma *** should have a clear understanding of the indications and contraindications for the use of ECMO to maximize its benefits in treating trauma patients.
