We perform self-consistent ab-initio calculations to study the structural and electronic properties of zinc blende ZnS, ZnO and their alloy. The full-potential muffin-tin orbitals (FP-LMTO) method was employed within density functional theory (DFT) based on local density Approximation (LDA), and generalized gradient approximation (GGA). We analyze composition effect on lattice constants, bulk modulus, band gap and effective mass of the electron. Using the approach of Zunger and coworkers, the microscopic origins of band gap bowing have been detailed and explained. Discussions will be given in comparison with results obtained with other available theoretical and experimental results.

The camel economy is of considerable importance for arid countries. In the last decade, studies about camel immune system and immune responses have recorded increasing interest. However, drawing a comprehensive picture of the camel immune system remains far from reached. A major part of this review is to cover the studies of the primary and secondary immune organs and the markers of the camel immune cells and certain lymphoid tissues. At the same time, immune responses to different diseases and the nature of effective immunity were included, with an emphasis on the most important zoonotic diseases in camels such as MERS CoV;brucellosis. New findings on the diversity mechanisms of camel immunoglobulin genes were addressed. However, detail of the mechanism of MHC-restricted cellular immunity and the mechanism of B lymphocyte activation in camels await further attention. Interestingly, the gross and the histological structure of the lymphoid tissues of the camel’s thymus, tonsils, and peyer’s patches have indicated significant differences from other animals in terms of structure and function. The most peculiar CD expression, such as LPAM-I, MAdCAM-1 and CX3CR1, in certain camel cells and tissues refers to possible extraordinary mechanisms of immune hemostasis in camel in comparison to other ruminants. The widely applied immunodiagnostic techniques to control camel diseases and to assist in improving the camel resistance were considered. Nigella sativa and Matricaria chamomilla are extensively consumed as tea or tonic. Despite their widespread use as a home remedy, relatively few trials evaluated their benefits in nephroprotection. Hence, this study evaluates the nephroprotective effects of supportive treatments (N. sativa, M. chamomilla and vitamin E) in cisplatin nephrotoxicity rat model. Eighty rats divided into 10 groups, of 8 animals each. The first group (G1) injected with saline intra-pretoneal (i.p). G2 injected with 5 mg/kg cisplatin i.p on zero day of experiment and repeated 4 times, with 5 days free interval. G3-G10 received daily supportive treatments, started 5 days before the experiment (–5day). Concomitantly G4, G6, G8 and G10 injected with 5 mg/kg cisplatin i.p like G2. On day sixteen, animal scarified, serum and/or kidney tissue were used to determine kidney function tests (serum urea, creatinine, NAG, β-gal), oxidative stress indices (NO, LPO), antioxidant activities (SOD), sulphur compounds (GGT, GSH, total thiols ), apoptotic indices (cathepsin D, DNA fragmentation), two minerals (Ca2+ and zn2+). Cisplatin caused marked elevation in serum GGT that reduced signifi-cantly in group received M. chamomilla with cisplatin (P < 0.001). There is a correlation between GGT and NAG in cisplatin group (r = 0.731 p < 0.05) that may suggest one of possible mechanisms of renal injury by cisplatin. M. chamomilla followed by N. sativa and vitamin E improved the biochemical and pathological renal injury, as determined by increasing the body weight, normalizing the kidney functions, decreasing the oxidative stress markers, improving the apoptotic markers, minimizing the pathological changes. Hence, N. sativa and M. chamomilla will be a promising nephroprotective agents for reducing cisplatin nephrotoxicity, most probably, by antioxidants effects and inhibition GGT production, respectively.

Background Pituitary apoplexy(PA)is defined as the hemorrhage or the infraction of a pituitary *** to determine the epidemiological,clinical,paraclinical characteristics as well as management and outcomes of PA in our population,we conducted this cross-sectional *** This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Endocrinology of Hedi chaker university hospital,*** was collected from medical charts of patients with pituitary apoplexy admitted in our department between 2000 and *** We included 44 patients with *** mean age was 50±12.6 *** them,31.8%had a known pituitary adenoma,and it was in all cases a macroadenoma,predominantly a prolactin secreting tumor(42.8%).A triggering factor of PA was encountered in 31.8%of cases and it was mainly:head trauma,dopamine antagonists,and *** clinical presentation of PA encompassed headaches(84.1%),visual disturbances(75%),and neurological signs(40.9%).Gonadotropin deficiency was the most frequent form of hypopituitarism noted(59.1%),followed by corticotropin deficiency(52.3%),thyrotropin deficiency(47.7%),and somatotropin deficiency(2.3%).Hormonal assessment at PA onset,concluded that 23 had a secreting adenoma:18 prolactinomas,3 ACTH-secreting adenomas,and 2 GH-secreting *** the 21 remaining cases,the tumor was non-functioning(47.7%).Pituitary MRI was performed in 42 cases(95.5%),revealing infraction and or hemorrhage in the pituitary gland in 33 cases;a heterogenous signal or a fluid level within the adenoma,in nine *** administration of intra venous hydrocortisone was required in 19 *** administration was mandatory in a patient who had severe intracranial *** management of the PA was imperative in 24 patients(54.5%):15 suffered from severe visual impairment,4 had an intracranial hypertension,2 cases demonstrated an impaired consciousness,2 patients experienced a tumor enlargement and one case had a severe

Objectives: To explore patient’s perspectives of the role of the community pharmacist in view of other health care professionals (specialist physician, general practitioner, nurse and others (e.g. herbalist)) in Jordan, UAE and Iraq. The study also investigated patient’s willingness to pay for specialized pharmaceutical care services. Methods: This study followed a single phase cross sectional survey methodology, conducted in three Middle Eastern countries. Data were collected over a period of 6 months on two consecutive years (March to May 2009 and 2010). A questionnaire was designed and validated, then completed by patients walking into community pharmacies. The source of advice (specialist physician, general practitioner, pharmacist, nurse, or herbalist) regarding patient’s medication use and medical management were investigated. Key findings: Patients visiting community pharmacies in Jordan (n = 1000), UAE (n = 1000) and Iraq (n = 968) were recruited into the study (mean age 35.9 ± 13.1, 50.6% males). Significant difference between the three countries was shown, as more patients chose the pharmacist as their primary source of advice on medication use vs. the specialist physician in Jordan (50.8% vs. 37.3%) and Iraq (41.9% vs. 36.7%) compared to UAE (38.0% vs. 40.1%), P < 0.001, Chi-square test. Few agreed to receive paid pharmaceutical care services (Jordan 19.5%;UAE 24.7%;Iraq 2.3%). Conclusion: Current situation resulting in the lower socioeconomic status in Jordan and Iraq seems to lead to patients’ higher reliance on the pharmacist, as compared to the UAE. Majority of patients, regardless of the country of origin, are not willing to pay for specialized pharmaceutical care services. These findings are important for future social pharmacy research in the area.

Early Predictors of Acute Pancreatitis Related In-Hospital Mortality: How Practical Are They?

Background/Purpose: Early assessment of the severity of acute pancreatitis (AP) is a highly challenge for a physicians’ practice to improve the management and decrease the mortality. We aimed to determine early prognostic factors for AP related in-hospital mortality. Methods: Upon hospital admission, predictors of AP related in-hospital mortality were prospectively assessed using regression analysis over 129 consecutive AP patients. Predictive abilities of these prognostic factors were compared using the area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results: AP related in-hospital mortality was 10.9%. Red cell distribution (RDW), serum creatinine, glucose and albumin were associated with AP mortality. RDW had the highest AUC followed by serum creatinine and albumin (AUC: 914, 95% CI: 0.797 - 0.975;0.797, 95% CI: 0.695 - 0.878;0.798, 95% CI: 0.677 - 0.865 respectively). The cut-off with the best ability to predict in-hospital mortality was 14.2 for RDW. By coupling RDW and serum creatinine, AUC was improved to 0.940, 95% CI: 0.839 - 0.986. Conclusion: RDW, serum creatinine, albumin, and glucose even with borderline level changes may predict AP related in-hospital mortality, where, RDW has the highest prognostic accuracy. Coupling RDW and serum creatinine model significantly improves their predictive accuracy that may aid in further improvement of the quality of care of AP patients.

This study delves into the charge transfer mechanism of boron (B)-doped 3C-SiC through first-principles investigations. We explore the effects of B doping on the electronic properties of 3C-SiC, focusing on a 12.5% impurity concentration. Our comprehensive analysis encompasses structural properties, electronic band structures, and charge density distributions. The optimized lattice constant and band gap energy of 3C-SiC were found to be 4.373 Å and 1.36 eV respectively, which is in agreement with previous research (Bui, 2012;Muchiri et al., 2018). Our results show that B doping narrows the band gap, enhances electrical conductivity, and influences charge transfer interactions. The charge density analysis reveals substantial interactions between B dopants and surrounding carbon atoms. This work not only enhances our understanding of the material’s electronic properties, but also highlights the importance of charge density analysis for characterizing charge transfer mechanisms and their implications in the 3C-SiC semiconductors.

BACKGROUND The current coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has affected routine endoscopy service across the gastroenterology *** led to the suspension of service provision for elective *** To assess the potential barriers for resuming the endoscopy service in *** A national online survey,four domains,was disseminated over a period of 4 wk in August *** primary outcome of the survey was to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the endoscopy service and barriers to the full resumption of a disabled center(s).RESULTS A hundred and thirteen Egyptian endoscopy centers participated in the *** waiting list was increased by≥50% in 44.9% of areas with clusters of COVID-19 cases(n=49)and in 35.5% of areas with sporadic cases(n=62).Thirty nine(34.8%)centers suffered from staff shortage,which was considered a barrier against service resumption by 86.4% of centers in per-protocol *** multivariate analysis,the burden of cases in the unit locality,staff shortage/recovery and the availability of separate designated rooms for COVID-19 cases could markedly affect the resumption of endoscopy practice(P=0.029,<0.001 and 0.02,respectively)and Odd’s ratio(0.15,1.8 and 0.16,respectively).CONCLUSION The COVID-19 pandemic has led to restrictions in endoscopic *** staff shortage/recovery and the availability of COVID-19 designed rooms are the most important barriers against *** working hours and dividing endoscopy staff into teams may help to overcome the current situation.

Association between Immunological Thrombocytopenia and Thrombosis, Is It an Exotic Phenomenon?—A Case Report

Immunologic thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune disease associated with the production of autoantibodies against specific platelet membrane glycoproteins. A thrombotic event as an unusual occurrence during ITP is becoming more and more frequent. In fact, several recent studies have shown an increased thrombotic risk in this situation. The case presented here is that of a fifty-one-year-old woman with extensive cerebral venous thrombosis 2 years after her ITP diagnosis. During IT, thrombosis may be triggered by the release of pro-thrombotic platelet micro-particles and by platelet activation due to the interaction between autoantibodies and platelet glycoproteins. Immunosuppressive therapy has also been linked in several studies to the thrombotic phenomenon. Increased thromboembolic risk should be taken into account in all ITP patients.
