Structural Control of Ore Mineralization in the Southeastern Margin of Western Nigeria Basement

Structural analyses are often ignored in mineral prospecting endeavor of any geological terrain despite the importance of geological structures in the formation of ore deposits. This paper correlates the results of mineral prospecting campaign to those of the structural analysis in the southeastern margin of the western Nigeria basement. The mineral prospecting was executed by essentially geochemical-exploration methods, while the structural analysis was achieved by lineament analysis using Landsat-8 imagery. The mineral prospecting campaign eventually led to the discovery of gold bearing marble deposit in the Dagbala area;silver and copper bearing silicified sheared rock in the Dagbala, Ojirami, Erurhu and Atte areas;lead and zinc bearing metaconglomerate around Egbigele;uranium and thorium bearing pegmatite in the Dagbala area. The Landsat-8 lineament analysis showed the presence of a shear zone in the central, folds in the SW, and fractures in the NE parts of the study area. The relation between the two is such that the gold and silver-copper mineralization is associated with the shear zone, the lead-zinc mineralization to the folds, and the uranium-thorium mineralization to the fractures. Indeed, geological structures guide mineralization and their analysis can be employed for mineral prospecting.

Geochemical Soil Survey for Base and Precious Metals in Dagbala-Atte District, Southwestern Nigeria

Geochemical survey of residual soils was undertaken in Dagbala-Atte District of Igarra Schist Belt, southwestern Nigeria to explore for base and precious metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Au and Ag). It involved sampling residual soil from 49 sites in a grid pattern;analyzing the soil samples for the base and precious metals and other commonly associated elements including As, Cd, Fe, Hg and Sb;subjecting the geochemical data generated to statistical analysis;and preparing the geochemical distribution map of the district for each element.? On the basis of the multivariate statistical analysis (correlation matrix and factor analysis) of the soil geochemical data, three mineralization types were inferred to be present in the district. The suspected types of mineralization consist of: 1) Cu-Pb-Zn-Ag mineralization with associated As, Hg, Sb and Fe;2) Au-Cu mineralization with associated As;and 3) minor Hg-bearing Au-Pb mineralization. With the aid of the elemental geochemical distribution maps, the suspected mineralization was linked to rock types from which the sampled residual soils were apparently derived. Hence, the suspected Cu-Pb-Zn-Ag mineralization is linked to the quartz-biotite schist at the southwestern part of the district while the suspected Au-Cu mineralization is located on the silicified sheared rock at the northern and southern parts and the minor Hg-bearing Au-Pb mineralization within the granitic gneiss at the northeastern and eastern areas of the district. Based on the foregoing findings, it is recommended that lithogeochemical survey for the base and precious metals should be done in the area.

Classification, Tectonic Setting, and Mineralization Potential of Ayetoro and Sasaro Syenitic Plutons in Igarra Schist Belt, Southwestern Nigeria

Petrographic and geochemical studies of syenite-looking Ayetoro and Sasaro plutons within Igarra Schist Belt were carried out in order to classify them and determine their tectonic setting and mineralization potential. Petrographic study and geochemical classification revealed that while Ayetoro boss is microgranite constituting an aggregate of medium grained muscovite, quartz and biotite minerals, Sasaro stock is micromonzonite made up of medium grained albite, orthoclase, biotite, hornblende and pyroxene. Geotectonic setting showed the boss and stock are orogenic, probably derived from the same upper mantle magma as Igarra batholith that got contaminated by crustal materials responsible for their difference in lithology. Their mineralization potential showed that the massive Ayetoro microgranite with no appreciable trace-element contents cannot serve as host of any metallic deposit, and should be suitable for industrial applications. Whereas, the silicified, highly sheared Sasaro monzonite, with elevated level of some trace elements contents as Ag, Au and Cu, could harbor Ag-Au-Cu deposit.

Geochemical Classification and Geotectonic Setting of Granitic Gneisses from Southeastern Margin of Western Nigeria Basement

Chemical whole-rock major oxides and some trace element analyses were done on granitic-gneiss rocks from Dagbala-Atte District,located on the southeastern margin of western Nigeria Basement *** was meant to classify the rocks and to understand the tectonic setting in order to evaluate their crustal *** chemical analyses were done using inductively-coupled plasma mass *** the results obtained,these rocks classified into calc-alkaline to shoshonite series with metaluminous to peraluminous *** are I-type granitoids of feroan *** granitic gneisses formed from metamorphism of granite and ***,most of the rock samples plotted in the field of island arc,continental arc and continental-collisional granitoids,which indicated that the protolith granite and granodiorite are orogenic and are arc related inferring arc tectonic setting.
