Vegetative propagation of Litsea monopetala, a wild tropical medicinal plant: Effects of indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) on stem cuttings

In this study we investigated the rooting ability and the growth performance of juvenile single-node leafy stem cuttings of Litsea monopetala （Roxb） Pers. collected from two mature mother trees preserved in the hill forest of Chittagong district, Bangladesh. The rooting ability of cuttings was studied under 0%, 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.4% indole-3-butyric acid （IBA） treatments. Significantly better rooting response （p ≤ 0.05） was observed with 0.1% IBA compared to control （0% IBA）. The mean number of roots and the length of the longest root of cuttings in different treatments showed no significant difference （p≤0.05）. After transfer into polythene bags from non-mist propagator, rooted cuttings treated with 0%, 0.1% and 0.2% IBA demonstrated the highest （100 ± 0.00%） survival capacity. The mean number of shoots developed in cuttings in the polythene bags in first three weeks varied significantly （p≤0.05） among the treatments. Effects of three fertilizer treatments, viz. T0 （no fertilizer）, T1 （10g Urea, 20g TSP, 10g MOP dissolved in 1 L water） and T2 （10g Urea, 20g TSP, 10g MOP dissolved in 2 L water） on initial growth ofstecklings were also measured over a 90-days period. The increment of leaf area of stecklings was significantly higher （p≤0.05） under T0 compared with that under T1 and T2 while the increment of stem length, collar diameter and root biomass varied insignificantly among different fertilizer treatments. The results suggest that rooting juvenile single-node leafy stem cuttings could be an effective mean of regenerating L. monopetala. The application of 0.1% IBA concentration is recommended for rooting of juvenile leafy stem cuttings and application of fertilizer appeared unnecessary for the subsequent growth of stecklings in polythene bags.

Production and characterization of organic manure from liquorice residues

In present investigation,organic manure was produced and characterized from liquorice residues using activated Effective Microoganism(AEM).The liquorice waste residues were fermented for the period of 6 months in the presence of activated AEM at the rate of 2.5%and 5%of total fermented ***(62.5 g)was used per 10 kg of liquorice and moister was maintained at 55–60%during *** AEM manure production efficiency was evaluated on the basis of pH,C/N ratio,electrical conductivity(EC)and mineral *** final pH of organic manure was 6.2,C/N ratio reduced from 13.5 to 6.5,EC and the mineral contents were increased of composted *** revealed that the AEM are effective to produce organic manure from agricultural waste matter since the organic manure physico-chemical properties were within the permissible limit and AEM could be used for the production of compost ***,this technique can also be extended to other agricultural waste materials for the production of organic manure.

The effect of multi-step tempering on retained austenite content and mechanical properties of low alloy steel used in the forged cold back-up roll was *** evolutions were characterized by optical microscope,X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscope and Feritscope,while the mechanical properties were determined by hardness and tensile *** results revealed that the content of retained austenite decreased by about 2% after multi-step ***,the content of retained austenite increased from 3.6% to 5.1% by increasing multi-step tempering *** hardness and tensile strength increased as the austenitization temperature changed from 800 to 920 ℃,while above 920 ℃,hardness and tensile strength *** addition,the maximum values of hardness,ultimate and yield strength were obtained via triple tempering at 520 ℃,while beyond 520 ℃,the hardness,ultimate and yield strength decreased sharply.

Composition analysis and antimicrobial activity of essential oil from leaves of Laurus nobilis grown in Oman

Traditionally,Laurus nobilis is used for the treatment of earaches and skin rashes as well as *** most common technique to isolate the oil is hydro-distillation and *** investigation presented in this paper was aimed to unravel the antimicrobial activity and chemical composition of essential oil in the leaves of *** grown in *** essential oil was extracted from the leave of the selected plant species by hydro distillation using Clevenger type *** antimicrobial assay was done by disc diffusion methods against three bac-terial strains,Staphylococcus aureus,Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli,and one fungal strain:Candida *** isolated essential oil was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS).The percentage yield of the essential oil was 0.064%(w/w).The essen-tial oil was found actively against the applied bacterial and fungal *** highest activity was found against *** and the lowest was against ***,and the order was ***>***>*** essential oil was also active against the fungus *** range of inhibition zones was 6-14 *** results of GC-MS analysis showed(E)-𝛽-caryophyllene to be the major component about 59.62%.Other major components included𝛼-selinene(14.03%),𝛼-humulene(8.65%),𝛽-selinene(4.99%),and𝛼-pinene(4.98%).In addition,several minor com-ponents were found in the essential oil of *** on the experimental results,it showed that the plant species that grown in Oman were a potential source of therapeutic *** con-clusion,the essential oil and the plant could be used as natural and potential therapeutic agents to treat earaches,skin rashes,and rheumatism.

Recurrent Support and Relevance Vector Machines Based Model with Application to Forecasting Volatility of Financial Returns

In the recent years, the use of GARCH type (especially, ARMA-GARCH) models and computational-intelligence-based techniques—Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Relevance Vector Machine (RVM) have been successfully used for financial forecasting. This paper deals with the application of ARMA-GARCH, recurrent SVM (RSVM) and recurrent RVM (RRVM) in volatility forecasting. Based on RSVM and RRVM, two GARCH methods are used and are compared with parametric GARCHs (Pure and ARMA-GARCH) in terms of their ability to forecast multi-periodically. These models are evaluated on four performance metrics: MSE, MAE, DS, and linear regression R squared. The real data in this study uses two Asian stock market composite indices of BSE SENSEX and NIKKEI225. This paper also examines the effects of outliers on modeling and forecasting volatility. Our experiment shows that both the RSVM and RRVM perform almost equally, but better than the GARCH type models in forecasting. The ARMA-GARCH model is superior to the pure GARCH and only the RRVM with RSVM hold the robustness properties in forecasting.

Every year, millions of individuals throughout the world are seriously affected by dengue virus. The unavailability of a vaccine and of anti-viral drugs has made this mosquito-borne disease a serious health concern. Not only does dengue cause fatalities but it also has a profoundly negative economic impact. In recent decades, extensive research has been performed on epidemiology, vector biology, life cycle, pathogenesis, vaccine development and prevention. Although dengue research is still not at a stage to suggest definite hopes of a cure, encouraging significant advances have provided remarkable progress in the fight against infection. Recent developments indicate that both anti-viral drug and vaccine research should be pursued, in parallel with vector control programs.

Effect of alloying elements on thermal stability of nanocrystalline Al alloys

The effect of incorporating limited-diffusivity elements such as Fe and Ti on thermal stability of the nanocrystalline Al alloy was ***−10wt.%Fe and Al−10wt.%Fe−5wt.%Ti alloys were *** initial mixtures of powders were milled for 100 h in *** bulk samples were fabricated from the milled powders in a high frequency induction heat sintering(HFIHS)*** milled powders and the bulk sintered samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),Vickers microhardness,field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM-EDS)and transmission electron microscopy(TEM).The observations indicated that Fe and Ti were completely dispersed in the matrix to form a supersaturated solid solution(SSSS)with ***,the inclusion of alloying elements led to an increase in hardness and yield strength of the alloy by 127%and 152%,*** elevated temperature compression tests were carried out to evaluate the thermal stability of the *** Al−10wt.%Fe−5wt.%Ti alloy revealed the optimum thermally stable behavior of the three alloys *** incorporation of Fe and Ti improved the thermal stability of the developed alloys through inhibiting the grain growth,hindering dissolution and growth of second phases(such as Al13Fe4 and Al13Ti),and forming a stable solid solution.
