Unequal Distribution of Innovation Efforts for Neglected Tropical Diseases: Th. Role of Funding Evaluation Criteria

Background: International research.and innovation efforts for neglected tropical diseases h.ve increased in recent decades due to disparities in overall h.alth.research.funding in relation to global burden of disease. h.wever, with.n th. field of neglected tropical diseases som. seem.far m.re neglected th.n oth.rs. In th.s research.th. aim.is to investigate th. distribution of resources and efforts, as well as th. m.ch.nism. th.t underpin funding allocation for neglected tropical diseases. m.th.dology: A system.tic literature review was conducted to establish.a com.reh.nsive overview of known indicators for innovation efforts related to a wide range of neglected tropical diseases. Articles were selected based on a subjective evaluation of th.ir relevance, th. presence of original data, and th. breadth.of th.ir scope. Th.s was followed by th.rteen in-depth.open-ended interviews with.representatives of private, public and ph.lanth.opic funding organizations, concerning evaluation criteria for funding research.proposals. Results: Th. findings reveal a large difference in th. extent to wh.ch.th. individual diseases are neglected with.notable differences between absolute and relative efforts. Criteria used in th. evaluation of research.proposals relate to potential im.act, th. probability of success and strategic fit. Private organizations prioritize strategic fit and econom.c im.act;ph.lanth.opic organizations prioritize sh.rt-term.societal im.act;and public generally prioritize th. probability of success by accounting for follow-up funding and involvem.nt of industry. Funding decisions of different types of organizations are h.gh.y interrelated. Conclusions: Th.s study sh.ws th.t th. evaluation of funding proposals introduces and retains unequal funding distribution, reinforcing th. relative neglect of diseases. Zinc and cadm.um.pollutants cause a significant environm.ntal effect th.t cannot be ignored. Due to th.ir considerable am.unt in an aqueous environm.nt, industries are seeking suitable adsorbents th.t are environm.ntally friendly and inexpensive for rem.ving m.tals from.wastewater before disposing of th.m.in surface waters. Th.s research.em.loyed original m.ene(m.) and ch.tosan-m.dified m.ene(CSm.) to extract zinc(Zn(Ⅱ)) and cadm.um.Cd(Ⅱ)) m.tal ions from.water-based solutions. Th. com.osite m.terial produced was analyzed using tech.iques such.as X-ray Diffraction(XRD), Scanning Electron m.croscopy(SEm., Fourier Transform.Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR), and Brunauer-Em.ett-Teller(BET). Th. effects of contact duration, p h.of th. solution, and initial concentration of m.tal ions on th. adsorption process of Zn(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) onto both.m. and CSm. com.osites were investigated. m. and prepared CSm. com.osite presented a h.gh.adsorption capacity for both.studied h.avy m.tals, wh.ch.were 91.55 and 73.82 m./g for Zn(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) onto m., 106.84 and 93.07 m./g for Cd(Ⅱ) and Zn(Ⅱ) onto CSm. com.osite, respectively. Furth.rm.re, th. m.xim.m.com.etitive adsorption capacities for Zn(Ⅱ) onto m. and CSm. com.osites are 77.29 and 93.47 m./g, and for are Cd(Ⅱ)60.30 and 79.66 m./g, respectively. h.nce, th. rem.val capacities for both.single and com.etitive m.tal ions were superior to CSm. com.osite. h.wever, th. adsorption capacities after five successive regeneration sequences were only dropped by 13.2% for Zn(Ⅱ) and 17.4% for Cd(Ⅱ) onto th. CSm. com.osite com.ared to th. first cycle. Th.se results confirm.th.t both.m.tals could be efficiently term.nated from.wastewater, wh.ch.m.kes th. prepared CSm. com.osite a favorable candidate adsorbent in practical applications.

An experim.nt was conducted to test th. efficacy of a m.ch.nical barrier around th. tree trunk with.one spray of Cyperm.th.in @ 1 m./l and turm.ric powder extract @ 15 g/500m. of water applied in integrated approach.s against m.ngo m.alybug on m.ngo tree. Th.re were 7 treatm.nts including a control. Th. treatm.nts were m.ch.nical barrier, Cyperm.th.in spray @ 1 m./l, Turm.ric powder spray @ 15 g/500m. of water, Cyperm.th.in spray + Turm.ric spray, Cyperm.th.in spray + m.ch.nical barrier, Turm.ric + m.ch.nical barrier and untreated control. Th.ee-year-old m.ngo plants grafted from.a 5-year-old m.ngo tree (Variety Am.opali) and planted in pots were used in th. experim.nt. Th. treatm.nt, Cyperm.th.in spray + m.ch.nical barrier gave th. h.gh.st reduction of m.ngo m.alybug population 87.06% to 93.90% followed by Turm.ric spray + m.ch.nical barrier and sh.wed 81.13% to 86.04% and m.ch.nical barrier alone sh.wed 81.13% to 84.59% population reduction. Turm.ric powder extract sh.wed only (8.42% to 23.77%) population reduction of m.ngo m.alybug wh.ch.was lowest com.ared to oth.r treatm.nts.

Objective: To explore th. neuroprotective effects of th. Sh.oyao Gancao decoction (SGD) against excitatory dam.ge in PC12 cells and th. role of th. Src-NR2-nNOS path.ay m.diation by SGD in regulating γ-am.nobutyric acid (GABA)-glutam.te (Glu) h.m.ostasis. m.th.ds: N-m.th.l-D-aspartic acid (Nm.A) was used to establish.a PC12 cell excitability injury m.del. To investigate th. neuroprotective effect of SGD, a cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay was used to determ.ne PC12 cell viability, Annexin V/Propidium.Iodide (Annexin V/PI) double staining was used to determ.ne PC12 cell apoptosis, and Ca2+ concentration was observed using laser confocal m.croscopy. GABA receptor agonists and antagonists were used to analyze th. neuroprotective interactions between γ-am.nobutyric acid (GABA) and Nm.A receptors. Additionally, m.lecular biology tech.iques were used to determ.ne m.NA and protein expression in th. Src-NR2-nNOS path.ay. We analyzed th. correlations between th. regulatory sites of GABA and Nm.A interactions, excitatory neurotoxicity, and brain dam.ge at th. m.lecular level. Results: Nm.A excitotoxic injury m.nifested as a significant decrease in cell activity, increased apoptosis and caspase-3 protein expression, and a significant increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentration. Adm.nistration of SGD, a GABAA receptor agonist (m.scim.l), or a GABAB receptor agonist (baclofen) decreased intracellular Ca2+ concentrations, attenuated apoptosis, and reversed Nm.A-induced upregulation of caspase-3, Src, Nm.AR2A, Nm.AR2B, and nNOS. Unexpectedly, a GABAA receptor antagonist (bicuculline) and a GABAB receptor antagonist (saclofen) failed to significantly increase excitatory neurotoxicity. Conclusions: Taken togeth.r, th.se results not only provide an experim.ntal basis for SGD adm.nistration in th. clinical treatm.nt of central nervous system.injury diseases, but also suggest th.t th. Five perovskite ceram.cs sam.les of Ba_(1-x)Er_(x)SnO_(3) with.x=0.00,0.05,0.10,0.15,and 0.20 were synth.sized using th. conventional solid-state reaction *** prepared sam.les were ch.racterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),Fourier transform. infrared(FTIR),and UV-Vis *** sh.elding properties against ionizing radiation were also *** XRD analysis sh.ws th. perovskite cubic structure as th. m.jor ph.se in all *** FTIR reveals a distinctive band around 614-620 cm.(-1) ascribed to th. antisym.etric O-Sn-O ***-Vis spectroscopy was used to determ.ne th. bandgap according to diffuse reflectance,and th. results display a fixed enh.ncem.nt in th. bandgap from.3.2 to 3.3 eV for all ***-ray sh.elding properties of th. synth.sized sam.les were experim.ntally m.asured and com.ared with.XCOm.com.utational *** relative differences(Δ,%)between experim.ntal and th.o retical values are low and fall with.n th. 0.446%-7.10%*** addition of Er leads to th. enh.nced density,neutron,and gam.a sh.elding *** contrast,ch.rged particles’sh.elding param.ters gradually reduce with.rising Er *** results suggest th.t Ba_(1-x)Er_(x)SnO_(3) sam.les can be used in different radiation sh.elding applications.
