Effects of Carpobrotus edulis Extract on Oxidative Stress and 158N Oligodendrocyte Death

Objective Age-related diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, are associated with oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, and increase the levels of cholesterol auto-oxidation products such as 7β-hydroxycholesterol(7β-OhC). Thus, it is imperative to identify agents that can prevent 7β-OhC-induced side-effects. Methods We evaluated the potential protective effects of Carpobrotus edulis ethanol-water extract(EWe) on murine oligodendrocytes(158 N) cultured in the absence or presence of 7β-OhC(20 μg/mL, 24 h). The cells were incubated with EWe(20-200 μg/mL) 2 h before 7β-OhC treatment. Mitochondrial activity and cell growth were evaluated with the MTT assay. Photometric methods were used to analyze antioxidant enzyme [catalase(CAT) and glutathione peroxidase(GPx)] activities and the generation of lipid and protein oxidation products [malondialdehyde(MDA), conjugated diene(CD), and carbonylated proteins(CPs)]. Results Treatment with 7β-OhC induced cell death and oxidative stress(reflected by alteration in CAT and SOD activities). Overproduction of lipid peroxidation products(MDA and CDs) and CPs was also reported. The cytotoxic effects associated with 7β-OhC were attenuated by 160 μg/mL of EWe of C. edulis. Cell death induced by 7β-OhC treatment was ameliorated, GPx and CAT activities were restored to normal, and MDA, CD, and CP levels were reduced following C. edulis extract treatment. Conclusion These data demonstrate the protective activities of C. edulis EWe against 7β-OhC-induced disequilibrium in the redox status of 158 N cells, indicative of the potential role of this plant extract in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases.

Multi-objective optimization of wastewater treatment using electrocoagulation

The Internet subscribers are expected to increase up to 69.7%(6 billion)from 45.3%and 25 billion Internet-of-things connections by ***,the ubiquitous availability of data-hungry smart multimedia devices urges research attention to reduce the energy consumption in the fifthgeneration cloud radio access network to meet the future traffic demand of high data *** propose a new cell zooming paradigm based on joint transmission(JT)coordinated multipoint to optimize user connection by controlling the cell coverage in the downlink communications with a hybrid power *** endeavoring cell zooming technique adjusts the coverage area in a given cluster based on five different JT schemes,which will help in reducing the overall power consumption with minimum inter-cell *** provide heuristic solutions to assess wireless network performances in terms of aggregate throughput,energy efficiency index(EEI),and energy consumption gain under a different scale of network *** suggested algorithm allows efficient allocation of resource block and increases energy and spectral efficiency over the conventional location-centric cell zooming *** system-level simulations show that the proposed framework reduces energy consumption yielding up to 17.5%and increases EEI by 14%.Subsequently,a thorough comparison among different JT-based load shifting schemes is pledged for further validation of varying system bandwidths.

This paper presents a smart checkout system designed to mitigate the issues of noise and errors present in the existing barcode and RFID-based systems used at retail stores’checkout *** is achieved by integrating a novel AI algorithm,called Improved Laser Simulator Logic(ILSL)into the RFID *** enhanced RFID system was able to improve the accuracy of item identification,reduce noise interference,and streamline the overall checkout *** potential of the systemfor noise detection and elimination was initially investigated through a simulation study usingMATLAB and ILSL ***,it was deployed in a small-scale environment to validate its real-world *** show that RFID with the proposed new algorithm ILSL and AI basket is capable of accurately detecting the related itemswhile eliminating noise originating fromunrelated objects,achieving an accuracy rate of 88%.

Enhanced dielectric and optical properties of nanoscale barium hexaferrites for optoelectronics and high frequency application

M-type barium hexaferrites with chemical composition Ba1-xDyxFe12-yCryO19(x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, and y =0.0, 0.4, 0.5) were synthesized via sol–gel auto-combustion method. The samples were pre-sintered at 400℃ for 3 h and sintered at 950℃ for 5 h. The changes in the structural, dielectric, and optical properties were studied after the substitution of Dy3+and Cr3+ions. X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis confirms the formation of single phase hexaferrites with the absence of secondary phase. FTIR analysis gives an idea of the formation of hexaferrites with the appearance of two peaks at 438 cm-1and 589 cm-1. The field emission scanning electron micrographs(FESEM) show a combination of crystallites with large shapes close to hexagonal platelet-like shape and others with rice or rod-like shapes, whereas EDX and elemental analysis confirm the stoichiometry of prepared samples. The calculated band gap from UV-vis NIR spectroscopy spectra was found to decreases with increase in Dy3+–Cr3+substitution. The dielectric properties were explained on the basis of Maxwell–Wagner model. Enhancement of dielectric constant at higher frequencies was observed in all the samples. Low dielectric loss is also observed in all the samples and Cole–Cole plot shows that grain boundary resistance(Rgb) contribute most to the dielectric properties. The prepared samples exhibit properties that could be useful for optoelectronics and high frequency application.

herein, the fabrication of cellulose acetate (CA) silica-based nanocomposite membranes via the dry-wetphase inversion procedure for water desalination was investigated. The modified and unmodified silicananoparticles (MSNPs and SNPs) were prepared by the sol-gel technique. The effect of the SNPs andMSNPs was investigated on the CA membrane's properties and their performance for water *** CA nanocomposite membranes were characterized to study their structure, hydrophilicity, andmorphology. The fabricated nanocomposite membranes showed hydrophilic surface properties. Theperformance of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes was measured using a crossflow RO unit at 10 bar(1 bar = 0.1 MPa). The membrane with 10 mg of SNPs enhanced permeate water flux compared to thepristine CA membrane by 1.6 L/(m2·h). The effect of MSNPs on the nanocomposites' performance waslower than their counterpart in the case of adding SNPs. The membrane with 30 mg of MSNPs showedthe highest permeate water flux among other nanocomposite membranes with a value oAQSf 35.7 L/(m2·h)at 24 bar.

Robust nonlinear control strategy to maximize energy capture in a variable speed wind turbine with an internal induction generator

This paper proposes a control strategy to maximize the wind energy captured in a variable speed wind turbine, with an internal induction generator, at low to medium wind speeds. The proposed strategy controls the tipspeed ratio, via the rotor angular speed, to an optimum point at which the efficiency constant （or power coefficient） is maximum for a particular blade pitch angle and wind speed. This control method allows for aerodynan^c rotor power maximization without exact wind turbine model knowledge. Representative numerical results demonstrate that the wind turbine can be controlled to achieve near maximum energy capture.

Study of the Isotope Effects of Novel Superconducting Lah10-LaD10and h3S-D3S Systems

This paper is directed to study the isotope effects of some superconducting materials that have a strong coupling coefficient λ > 1.5, and focuses on new superconducting materials whose critical temperature is close to room temperature, specifically Lah10-LaD10 and h3S-D3S systems. The Eliashberg-McMillan (EM) model and the recent Gor’kov-Kresin (GK) model for evaluating the isotope effects coefficient α were examined for these systems. The predicted values of α as a function of pressure, as compared to experimental values led to inference that these two models, despite their importance and simplicity, cannot be considered complete. These models can be used to calculate isotope effect of most superconducting materials with strong coupling coefficients but with critical reliability. The significance of studying the isotope effect lies in the possibility of identifying the interatomic forces that control the properties of superconducting materials such as electrons-mediated phonons and Coulomb interactions.
