Spatial Distribution Pattern and Terrain Analysis of Urban Flash Floods and Inundated Areas in Maiduguri Metropolis, Borno State, Northeast, Nigeria

Maiduguri metropolis Nigeria, lies on a relatively flat terrain of about 350 meters above sea level and is part of the undulating Borno Plain that slopes towards the Lake Chad. The rapid physical expansion of the metropolis and the annual recurrent flash flooding and inundation problems within the city continues to impact devastating socioeconomic effects on the livelihood of residents sometimes leading to loss of lives and property. It is important therefore to understand the spatial pattern of floods and terrain characteristics in Maiduguri for planning purposes. The paper examined the spatial pattern of urban flash floods and inundations, and the terrain characteristics in Maiduguri metropolis. Digital Terrain Model (DTM) generated from the Shuttle Raddar Topography Mission was used to provide the basis for the terrain analysis to generate hydrological parameters such as elevation, flow accumulation and direction, drainage network and slope angle as well as classified elevation images and terrain wetness index to map out potential flood risk areas. The DTM identified potential areas liable to flash flood and inundation. The 3D Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of the area showed where potential floods or traps were located in the metropolis. The findings further revealed that Maiduguri was generally characterized by low lying locations with slope angles of less than 5 degrees covering an area of 144.4 km2 out of 148 km2 making it extremely difficult to drain. The processed flow accumulation of the study area showed a high flow accumulation pixel value of 19,972 that drained into outlet, suggesting that a large proportion of the study area was getting flooded during a rainstorm. Even though the calculated drainage density of 0.73 for the study area indicated a very good drainage system, this was also undermined by the flat terrain and urbanization. Modeling the capability of penetrating a jammed crowd to eliminate freezing transition

Frozen state from jammed state is one of the most interesting aspects produced when simulating the multidirectional pedestrian flow of high density crowds. Cases of real life situations for such a phenomenon are not exhaustively *** observations in the Hajj crowd show that freezing transition does not occur very often. On the contrary, penetrating a jammed crowd is a common aspect. We believe the kindness of pedestrians facing others whose walking is blocked is a main factor in eliminating the frozen state as well as in relieving the jammed state. We refine the social force model by incorporating a new social force to enable the simulated pedestrians to mimic the real behavior observed in the Hajj *** are performed to validate the work qualitatively.

Wireless Sensor Networks(WSNs)have hardware and software limitations and are deployed in hostile *** problem of energy consumption in WSNs has become a very important axis of *** obtain good performance in terms of the network lifetime,several routing protocols have been proposed in the *** routing is considered to be the most favorable approach in terms of energy *** is based on the concept parent-child hierarchy where the child nodes forward their messages to their parent,and then the parent node forwards them,directly or via other parent nodes,to the base station(sink).In this paper,we present a new Energy-Efficient clustering protocol for WSNs using an Objective Function and Random Search with Jumps(EEOFRSJ)in order to reduce sensor energy ***,the objective function is used to find an optimal cluster formation taking into account the ratio of the mean Euclidean distance of the nodes to their associated cluster heads(CH)and their residual ***,we find the best path to transmit data from the CHs nodes to the base station(BS)using a random search with *** simulated our proposed approach compared with the Energy-Efficient in WSNs using Fuzzy C-Means clustering(EEFCM)protocol using Matlab *** results have shown that our proposed protocol excels regarding energy consumption,resulting in network lifetime extension.

ECO-BAT: A New Routing Protocol for Energy Consumption Optimization Based on BAT Algorithm in WSN

Wireless sensor network (WSN) has been widely used due to its vastrange of applications. The energy problem is one of the important problems influencingthe complete application. Sensor nodes use very small batteries as a powersource and replacing them is not an easy task. With this restriction, the sensornodes must conserve their energy and extend the network lifetime as long as ***, these limits motivate much of the research to suggest solutions in alllayers of the protocol stack to save energy. So, energy management efficiencybecomes a key requirement in WSN design. The efficiency of these networks ishighly dependent on routing protocols directly affecting the network *** is one of the most popular techniques preferred in routing *** this work we propose a novel energy-efficient protocol for WSN based on a batalgorithm called ECO-BAT (Energy Consumption Optimization with BAT algorithmfor WSN) to prolong the network lifetime. We use an objective function thatgenerates an optimal number of sensor clusters with cluster heads (CH) to minimizeenergy consumption. The performance of the proposed approach is comparedwith Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) and EnergyEfficient cluster formation in wireless sensor networks based on the Multi-Objective Bat algorithm (EEMOB) protocols. The results obtained are interestingin terms of energy-saving and prolongation of the network lifetime.

Different types of pandemics that have appeared from time to time have changed many aspects of daily *** governments encourage their citizens to use certain applications to help control the spread of disease and to deliver other services during *** Saudi government has launched several mobile apps to control the pandemic and have made these apps available through Google Play and the app store.A huge number of reviews are written daily by users to express their opinions,which include significant information to improve these *** manual processing and extracting of information from users’reviews is an extremely difficult and time-consuming ***,the use of intelligent methods is necessary to analyse users’reviews and extract issues that can help in improving these *** research aims to support the efforts made by the Saudi government for its citizens and residents by analysing the opinions of people in Saudi Arabia that can be found as reviews on Google Play and the app store using sentiment analysis and machine learning *** the best of our knowledge,this is the first study to explore users’opinions about governmental apps in Saudi *** findings of this analysis will help government officers make the right decisions to improve the quality of the provided services and help application developers improve these applications by fixing potential issues that cannot be identified during application testing phases.A new dataset used for this research includes 8000 user reviews gathered from social media,Google Play and the app *** methods are applied to the dataset,and the results show that the k nearest neighbourhood(KNN)method generates the highest accuracy compared to other implemented methods.
