Clinical relevance of endoscopic assessment of inflammation in ulcerative colitis: Can endoscopic evaluation predict outcomes?

Ulcerative colitis(UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel condition characterised by a relapsing and remitting course. Symptom control has been the traditional mainstay of medical treatment. It is well known that histological inflammatory activity persists despite adequate symptom control and absence of endoscopic inflammation. Current evidence suggests that presence of histological inflammation poses a greater risk of disease relapse and subsequent colorectal cancer risk. New endoscopic technologies hold promise for developing endoscopic markers of mucosal inflammation. Achieving endoscopic and histological remission appears be the future aim of medical treatments for UC. This review article aims to evaluate the use of endoscopy as a tool in assessment of mucosal inflammation UC and its correlation with disease outcomes.

A Well-Balanced Runge-Kutta Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Multilayer ShallowWater Equations with Non-Flat Bottom Topography

A well-balanced Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin method is presented for the numerical solution of multilayer shallow water equations with mass exchange and non-ﬂat bottom *** governing equations are reformulated as a non-linear system of conservation laws with differential source forces and reaction *** between theﬂow layers is accounted for in the system using a set of ex-change *** considered well-balanced Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin method is a locally conservativeﬁnite element method whose approximate solutions are discontinuous across the inter-element *** well-balanced property is achieved using a special discretization of source terms that depends on the nature of hydrostatic solutions along with the Gauss-Lobatto-Legendre nodes for the quadra-ture used in the approximation of source *** method can also be viewed as a high-order version of upwindﬁnite volume solvers and it offers attractive features for the numerical solution of conservation laws for which standardﬁnite element methods *** deal with the source terms we also implement a high-order splitting operator for the time *** accuracy of the proposed Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin method is examined for several examples of multilayer free-surfaceﬂows over bothﬂat and non-ﬂat *** performance of the method is also demonstrated by comparing the results obtained using the proposed method to those obtained using the incompressible hydrostatic Navier-Stokes equations and a well-established kinetic *** proposed method is also applied to solve a recirculationﬂow problem in the Strait of Gibraltar.

Optimum configuration of groynes for stabilization of alluvial rivers with fine sediments

Severe bank erosion at lowland rivers in Bangladesh devours vast tract of lands and renders thousands of people homeless at high flood;also,rapid deposition changes bed topographies and seriously reduces navigability at low flow *** groynes and revetments are used to mitigate these problems, but the targeted goal is not achieved as *** study investigates the optimum configuration of a groyne to improve groyne performances at both high flow and low ***-Nays,a two-dimensional model for flow and morphology,is utilized in this study upon confirmation through the detailed experimental *** channel and flow parameters are taken conforming to a typical river of *** different configurations are compared to obtain the optimum *** performance of a groyne is evaluated through three key features - erosion in channel bed(thalweg),deposition in groyne field,and scour near *** computation reveals that the modified groynes function better than the conventional ones in respect of maintenance of navigation channel at low flow and bank protection at high flood as well.

Comparisons of corrosion behaviour for X65 and low Cr steels in high pressure CO2-saturated brine

Appropriate materials for injection pipelines and tubing for carbon dioxide geologic storage is fundamental to ensure asset integrity and save *** paper evaluates the corrosion behaviour of X65,1Cr,3Cr and 5Cr,which have the potential to be injection pipeline/tubing *** influence of steel Cr content on the general and localised corrosion behaviour was investigated at time periods from 6 to 192 h at 60℃and 100 *** evolution,morphology and chemistry of corrosion products on the surface of each material were evaluated using a combination of scanning electron microscopy,energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction and related to their overall corrosion *** indicate that prior to the formation of protective films on the steel surfaces,the resistance of the materials to corrosion increase with increasing Cr content(Corrosion resistance:X651Cr>3Cr>5Cr).In terms of the corrosion products on X65,both inner amorphous and outer crystalline corrosion layers consist of *** the Cr-containing steels,the outer layer also comprises FeCO3,but the inner layer is enriched with Cr,and is predominantly amorphous Cr(OH)*** extent of localised corrosion(determined using surface profilometry)is noticeably less for X65 compared to the Cr-containing *** paper raises questions about the benefits that low Cr steels offer towards extending component design life compared to carbon steel under the test conditions considered here.

Gas/water foams stabilized with a newly developed anionic surfactant for gas mobility control applications

Carbon dioxide(CO2) flooding is one of the most globally used EOR processes to enhance oil ***,the low gas viscosity and density result in gas channeling and gravity override which lead to poor sweep *** application for mobility control is a promising technology to increase the gas viscosity,lower the mobility and improve the sweep efficiency in the *** is generated in the reservoir by co-injection of surfactant solutions and *** there are many surfactants that can be used for such purpose,their performance with supercritical CO2(ScCO2) is weak causing poor or loss of mobility *** experimental study evaluates a newly developed surfactant(CNF) that was introduced for ScCO2 mobility control in comparison with a common foaming agent,anionic alpha olefin sulfonate(AOS) *** work was divided into three stages:foam static tests,interfacial tension measurements,and foam dynamic *** surfactants were investigated at different *** general,results show that both surfactants are good foaming agents to reduce the mobility of ScCO2 with better performance of CNF *** tests in the presence of crude oil show that the foam life for CNF extends to more than 24 h but less than that for ***,CNF features lower critical micelle concentration(CMC),higher adsorption,and smaller area/molecule at the liquid-air ***,entering,spreading,and bridging coefficients indicate that CNF surfactant produces very stable foam with light crude oil in both deionized and saline water,whereas AOS was stable only in deionized *** all conditions for mobility reduction evaluation,CNF exhibits stronger flow resistance,higher foam viscosity,and higher mobility reduction factor than that of AOS *** addition,CNF and ScCO2 simultaneous injection produced 8.83% higher oil recovery than that of the baseline experiment and 7.87% higher than that of *** drop profiles

The majority of global deaths are attributed to one of the noncommunicable diseases(NCDs),and cancer is projected to be the leading cause of death worldwide in the 21st century(1).There were 18.1 million incident cancer cases worldwide in 2018,43.8 million are living with cancer and 9.6 million deaths from *** in 6 deaths is due to cancer and these numbers are projected to rise to 13 million by 2030,more than that from tuberculosis,malaria and HIV/AIDS *** addition,the total annual global cost of cancer was estimated at around US$1.16 trillion,representing a significant burden on health care systems and families(1).

Dynamic resource allocation for service in mobile cloud computing with Markov modulated arrivals

Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) is a modern architecture that brings together cloudcomputing, mobile computing and wireless networks to assist mobile devices in storage,computing and communication. A cloud environment is developed to support a widerange of users that request the cloud resources in a dynamic environment with possible constraints. Burstiness in users service requests causes drastic and unpredictableincreases in the resource requests that have a crucial impact on policies of resourceallocation. How can the cloud system efficiently handle such burstiness when the cloudresources are limited? This problem becomes a hot issue in the MCC research area. Inthis paper, we develop a system model for the resource allocation based on the SemiMarkovian Decision Process (SMDP), able of dynamically assigning the mobile servicerequests to a set of cloud resources, to optimize the usage of cloud resources and maximize the total long-term expected system reward when the arrival process is a finitestate Markov-Modulated Poisson Process (MMPP). Numerical results show that ourproposed model performs much better than the Greedy algorithm in terms of achievinghigher system rewards and lower service requests blocking probabilities, especially whenthe burstiness degree is high, and the cloud resources are limited.

Treating wastewater under zero waste principle using wetland mesocosms

The present investigation demonstrates the synergistic action of using a sedimentation unit together with Cyperus papyrus(L.)wetland enriched with zeolite mineral in one-year round experiment for treating *** system was designed to support a horizontal surface flow pattern and showed satisfactory removal efficiencies for both physicochemical and bacteriological contaminants within 3 days of residence *** removal efficiencies ranged between 76.3%and 98.8%for total suspended solids,turbidity,iron,biological oxygen demand,and *** bacterial indicators(total and fecal coliforms,as well as fecal streptococci)and the potential pathogens(Escherichia coli,Staphylococcus aureus,and Pseudomonas aeruginosa)showed removal efficiencies ranged between 96.9%and 99.8%.We expect the system to offer a smart management for every component according to zero waste *** treated effluent was reused to irrigate the landscape of pilot area,and the excess sludge was recycled as fertilizer and soil *** zeolite mineral did not require regeneration for almost 36 weeks of operation,and enhanced the density of shoots(14.11%)and the height of shoots(15.88%).The harvested plant biomass could be a profitable resource for potent antibacterial and antioxidant bioactive *** could certainly offset part of the operation and maintenance costs and optimize the system implementation *** the experiment was designed under local conditions,its results could provide insights to upgrade and optimize the performance of other analogous large-scale constructed wetlands.
