Effect of Different Mulching Materials on Growth Parameters and Yield of Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) Production in Minna, Nigeria

During the 2022 growing season (August to November) at the Federal University of Technology, Minna School farm, Niger State, an experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of mulching on Okras growth, yield, and moisture content was examined across four distinct growth stages (initial, development, mid, and late) and at varying soil depths (0 - 30 cm and 30 - 60 cm). The study employed a randomised complete block design with four replications, encompassing control (T0), groundnut shells mulch (T1), black polythene mulch (T2), and white polythene mulch (T3) as treatments. The highest average Okra fresh pod yield, amounting to 23.4 t/ha, was achieved by implementing white plastic mulch, contrasting with the control treatment, which yielded the lowest at 22 t/ha. Notably, the control plots exhibited yield reductions of up to 32% compared to the plots employing white plastic mulching. The utilisation of mulch had a notable impact on the overall crop yield, with the superior quality evident in the treatment employing white plastic mulch (26 t/ha). The control treatment exhibited the lowest quality at 24.3 t/ha. Groundnut shell mulch influenced moisture conservation, but no significant variance was observed compared to the control plots. Therefore, the study suggests that polythene mulch may be the most suitable type to enhance the quality of okra production by conserving soil moisture. Among the biodegradable and non-biodegradable mulches used in this study, white polythene mulch was the most effective.

Background: Ethmoidal polyposis coexisting with adenoid enlargement and tympanic membrane perforation is a rare condition in otolaryngological practice. Evidences have shown that antrochoanal polyp often times coexists with adenoid enlargement especially in the young which was in sharp contrast to ethmoidal polyposis occurring in the presence of adenoid enlargement. Moreover, the hidden location of nasopharynx housing the adenoids, coupled with the masking effect of bilateral sinonasal polyps, leads to inadvertent misdiagnosis of this complex pathology with subsequent difficulty in providing effective management. Case Presentation: A 24 year-old lady presented with recurrent bilateral nasal obstruction that became persistent associated with nasal discharge and anosmia. She also had recurrent right otorrhoea with associated hearing loss. Diagnostic rigid nasal endoscopy revealed mucoid discharge with bilateral polypoid masses filling both nasal cavities. Otoendoscopic finding revealed a small (about 5%) central tympanic membrane perforation. A clinical assessment of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis complicated by chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) was made. A non-contrast CT scan of the paranasal sinuses showed isodense lesions in the nasal cavities, all paranasal sinuses and the entire nasopharynx. She had endoscopic sinus surgery and a nasopharyngeal clearance biopsy. The nasal, paranasal and nasopharyngeal masses had histologic confirmation of inflammatory nasal polyps and lymphoid (adenoid) hyperplasia respectively. Her condition improved remarkably with subsequent medical treatment. She was followed up for 8 months and no recurrence was observed. Conclusion: Sinonasal polyposis can coexist with adenoid hypertrophy and middle ear disease as a single pathological condition. Hence, a high index of suspicion and thorough evaluation become necessary for making timely diagnoses and instituting effective management.

Faulty Phase Identification for Transmission Line with Metal Oxide Varistor-protected Series Compensator

The nonlinear operation of metal oxide varistor(MOV)-protected series compensator in transmission lines introduces complications into fault detection approaches. The accuracy of a conventional fault detection schemes is adversely affected by continuous change of the system impedance and load current at the point of a series compensation unit. Thus, this study suggests a method for detecting the faulted phase in MOV-protected series-compensated transmission lines. Primarily, the fault feature is identified using the covariance coefficients of the current samples during the fault period and the current samples during the pre-fault period. Furthermore, a convenience fault detection index is established by applying the cumulative sum technique. Extensive validation through different fault circumstances is accomplished, including different fault positions,resistances, and inception times. The experimental results show that the proposed method performs well with high resistance or impedance faults, faults in noisy conditions, and close-in and far-end faults. The proposed method is simple and efficient for faulty phase detection in MOV-protected series-compensated transmission lines.

The number of mobile devices accessing wireless networks isskyrocketing due to the rapid advancement of sensors and wireless communicationtechnology. In the upcoming years, it is anticipated that mobile datatraffic would rise even more. The development of a new cellular networkparadigm is being driven by the Internet of Things, smart homes, and moresophisticated applications with greater data rates and latency *** are being used up quickly due to the steady growth of smartphonedevices andmultimedia apps. Computation offloading to either several distantclouds or close mobile devices has consistently improved the performance ofmobile devices. The computation latency can also be decreased by offloadingcomputing duties to edge servers with a specific level of computing ***-to-device (D2D) collaboration can assist in processing small-scaleactivities that are time-sensitive in order to further reduce task delays. The taskoffloading performance is drastically reduced due to the variation of differentperformance capabilities of edge nodes. Therefore, this paper addressed thisproblem and proposed a new method for D2D communication. In thismethod, the time delay is reduced by enabling the edge nodes to exchangedata samples. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has betterperformance than traditional algorithm.

Quartz dissolution in a single phase-high pH Berea sandstone via alkaline injection

Photoelectric Characterization of Dye Sensitized Solar Cells Using Natural Dye from Pawpaw Leaf and Flame Tree Flower as Sensitizers

Natural dyes from flame tree flower, Pawpaw leaf and their mixtures were used as sensitizers to fabricate dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). The photoelectrochemical performance of the Flame tree flower dye extract showed an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.50 V, short-circuit current density (JSC) of 0.668 mA/cm2, a fill factor (FF) of 0.588 and a conversion efficiency of 0.20%. The conversion efficiency of the DSSCs prepared by pawpaw leaf extract was 0.20%, with VOC of 0.50 V;short-circuit current density, JSC of 0.649 mA/cm2 and FF of 0.605. The conversion efficiency for the flame tree flower and pawpaw leaf dye mixture was 0.27%, with VOC of 0.518 V, JSC of 0.744 mA/cm2 and FF of 0.69. Although the conversion efficiencies, Jsc and the Voc of the prepared dye cells were lower than the respective 1.185%, 7.49 mA/cm2 and 0.64V reported for ruthenium, their fill factors (FF) were higher than that of ruthenium (0.497). It was also observed that both the short-circuit current density and the fill factors of the cells were enhanced using mixed dye.

Flue gas heat loss accounts for a significant component of theoverall heat loss for coal-fired boilers in power plants. The flue gas absorbsmore heat as the exhaust gas temperature rises, which reduces boiler efficiencyand raises coal consumption. Additionally, if the exhaust gas temperatureis too high, a lot of water must be used to cool the flue gas for the wetflue gas desulfurization system to function well, which has an impact onthe power plant’s ability to operate profitably. It is consequently vital totake steps to lower exhaust gas temperatures in order to increase boilerefficiency and decrease the amount of coal and water used. Desulfurizationperformance may be enhanced and water use can be decreased by reasonableflue gas characteristics at the entry. This study analyzed the unit’s energyconsumption, investment, and coal savings while proposing four couplingstrategies for regulating flue gas temperature and waste heat recovery. Agraded flue gas conditioning and waste heat recovery plan was presentedunder the condition of ensuring high desulfurization efficiency, along withthe notion of minimizing energy loss owing to energy inflow temperaturedifference. Numerical results show that the proposed methods improved thesystem performance and reduced the water consumption and regulated theboiler temperature.

Pure bitumen is not suitable for heavy traffic loads;hence modifiers are used to improve the bitumen ***,cup lump rubber(CLR)has become a preferred modifier due to its outstanding performance and less ***,little is known about the interactions between CLR and ***,this study investigates the behavior of bitumen with *** percentages of CLR(2.5%,5.0%,7.5%,and 10.0%by weight of bitumen)were used to modify conventional 60/70 penetration grade *** modified bitumen was evaluated through different laboratory testing such as dynamic shear rheometer,rotational viscosity,softening point,bending beam rheometer,ductility,and elastic *** testing results show that the addition of CLR increased the bitumen’s rutting resistance by 3 PG grades at high *** low pavement temperatures,the cup lump rubber modified bitumen(CMB)can withstand up to−34℃.Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR)analysis shows that the Aromaticity index at 1600 cm^(−1) rose as the CLR percentage increased,indicating the formation of a binder with a compact *** is expected to improve the elasticity of bitumen throughπ-π*** Force Microscopy(AFM)results showed the Catana phase increased in size and quantity at 5.0%and 7.5%CLR *** contact angle measurement revealed that the binders are hydrophobic and tend to repel the dropped water on the bitumen surface.

A Comparative Study of Ear Diseases in School Children from Lower versus Higher Socioeconomic Status

Background: Preventable otologic conditions have been found to be important health issues among paediatric age group. Poor socioeconomic status and inappropriate management services in developing countries lead to various complications despite the fact that most of these diseases are self-limiting. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and pattern of ear diseases in school children of high and low socioeconomic status in Yola, Nigeria. Methods: This study was conducted in March 2017 in two primary schools (private and public) in Yola among 6 - 8 years old pupils. Approval for the study was obtained from Federal Medical Centre, Yola and consent was obtained from the parents/guardians and the school authorities. Using a health questionnaire, a brief ENT history was obtained from children in years 1 and 2 of each school. Otoscopic examination, audiometry and tympanometry were then carried out. Data collected was analysed using SPSS version 20. Results: One hundred and three children were studied. The age range was 6 - 8 with mean age of 6.8 ± 0.9 and 53 (51.5%) boys. Fifty-two (50.5%) were from public school (low socio-economic class) and 51 (49.5%) from private (high social class). Wax was the most common ear condition encountered affecting 37 (35.9%) children, and the number was similar in both groups. Otitis media with effusion (OME) was encountered in seven children evenly split between the two groups showing a point incidence of 6.8%. There was hearing loss in 13 (12.6%) children, and this was also similar in the two groups. Conclusion: Wax impaction was the commonest otologic disease encountered. Our study also showed a point incidence of 6.8% for OME, but there was no statistical difference between the two groups, and neither was there any statistically significant difference between the two groups in any of the other diseases encountered.
