Pseudo-in-situ stir casting: a new method for production of aluminum matrix composites with bimodal-sized B_4C reinforcement

A new method was applied to produce an Al-0.5wt%Ti-0.3wt%zr/5vol%B_4C composite via stir casting with the aim of characterizing the microstructure of the resulting composite. For the production of the composite, large B4 C particles（larger than 75 μm） with no pre-heating were added to the stirred melt. Reflected-light microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, laser particle size analysis, and image analysis using the Clemex software were performed on the cast samples for microstructural analysis and phase detection. The results revealed that as a consequence of thermal shock, B_4 C particle breakage occurred in the melt. The mechanism proposed for this phenomenon is that the exerted thermal shock in combination with the low thermal shock resistance of B_4 C and large size of the added B_4 C particles were the three key parameters responsible for B_4 C particle breakage. This breakage introduced small particles with sizes less than 10 μm and with no contamination on their surfaces into the melt. The mean particle distance measured via image analysis was approximately 60 μm. The coefficient of variation index, which was used as a measure of particle distribution homogeneity, showed some variations, indicating a relatively homogeneous distribution.

In this study,the impacts of solutal Marangoni phenomenon on multiphase flow in static and micromodel geometries have experimentally been studied and the interactions between oil droplet and two different alkaline solutions(***04 and Na_2 CO_3) were *** static tests revealed that the Marangoni convection exists in the presence of the alkaline and oil which should carefully be considered in porous *** the micromodel experiments,observations showed that in the MgS04 flooding,the fluids stayed almost stationary,while in the Na2 C03 flooding,a spontaneous movement was *** changes in the distribution of fluids showed that the circular movement of fluids due to the Marangoni effects can be effective in draining of the unswept *** dimensional analysis for possible mechanisms showed that the viscous,gravity and diffusion forces were negligible and the other mechanisms such as capillary and Marangoni effects should be considered in the investigated *** value of the new defined Marangoni/capillary dimensionless number for the Na2 C03 solution was orders of magnitude larger than the MgS04 flooding scenario which explains the differences between the two cases and also between different micromodel *** conclusion,the Marangoni convection is activated by creating an ultra-low IFT condition in multiphase flow problems that can be profoundly effective in increasing the phase mixing and microscopic efficiency.

The present study focuses on the thermal response of carbon fiber-reinforced phenolic composites, where the matrix has been modified with different reinforcements. Two types of materials, multiwalled carbon nanotubes and zirconium diboride （zrB2）, were used in a new design of mixture to produce the heat- resistant ablative composite system. The CNT/zrB2/carbon/phenolic nanocomposite （z/NT-CR） system corresponding to CNT/carbon/phenolic nanocomposite （NT-CR） showed a reasonable decrease in mass loss and the ablation rate as compared to carbon/phenolic composite （CR）. However, substantial drop in two factors was found for z/NT-CR as compared to carbon/phenolic and NT-CR. Ablation mechanisms for all three composites were investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis in conjunction with micro- structural studies using a field emission scanning electron microscope. The microstructural studies revealed that CNTs acted as an ablation resistant phase for protection against 2000 ℃, and the conversion from zrB2 to zrO2 played an important role as an insulator in the performance of char layer in the ablation resistance.

Abstract Instead of the invariant theory approach employed by Beloshapka and Mamai for constructing the moduli spaces of Beloshapka＇s universal Cauchy-Riemann （CR） models, we consider two alternative approaches borrowed from the theories of equivalence problem and Lie symmetries, each of which having its own advan- tages. Also the moduli space M（1, 4） associated to the class of universal CR models of CR dimension 1 and codimension 4 is computed by means of the presented methods.
