Mass attenuation coefficient(μ_m) for polyethylene glycol(PEG) of different molecular w.ights w.s determined by using NaI(Tl) scintillator and w.n Xcom mixture rule at gamma energies of 59.5, 302.9, 356.0, 661.7, 1173.2 and 1332.5 keV. The total atomic, molecular and electronic cross sections, half-value layer, effective atomic and electron numbers, mass energy-absorption coefficients and kerma relative to air are calculated. The energy and compositional dependence of μ_m values, and the related radiation absorption parameters, are evaluated and discussed. The experimental results agree w.ll w.th the theoretical ones, w.thin an uncertainty of 1% in the effective atomic number for all PEG samples at the designated energies.

Magnetic resonance imaging （MRI） has been used to study the behaviour Of jets at the distributor of a 50 mm diameter fluidised bed of 0.5 mm diameter poppy seeds. Tw. perforated-plate distributors w.re examined, containing either 10 or 14 holes, each 1 mm diameter. Ultra-fast MR imaging w.s able to show.the transient nature of the upper parts of the jets, w.ere discrete bubbles are formed. Imaging in 3D show.d that the central jets w.re the longest for flow.rates below.minimum fluidisation. Above minimum fluidisation, the outer jets, nearest the w.ll of the fluidised bed, arched inw.rd tow.rds the central axis. In this latter case, interpretation of the time-averaged 3D image required the use of ultra-fast MR imaging to identify the approximate height above the distributor at w.ich discrete bubbles w.re formed. The apparently continuous void extending along the central axis above this height in the time-averaged 3D image w.s thus identified, using ultra-fast MR imaging, as representing the averaged paths of released bubbles. Time-averaged MR velocity mapping w.s also used to identify dead zones of stationary particles resting on the distributor betw.en the jets. The dead zones could be observed w.en the superficial velocity of the gas approached minimum fluidisation, but they w.re smaller than those observed at low.r gas superficial velocity. Comparable images of a single jet through 1.2 mm diameter poppy seeds from MRI and electrical capacitance volume tomography （ECVT） are also demonstrated.

Objective. Home parenteral nutrition(HPN) has been provided to patients w.th intestinal failure in Denmark since 1970. The results of a national survey comprising a w.ll-defined cohort receiving treatment w.th HPN in Denmark in the period from 1996 to the end of 2000 are presented, including data on incidence, prevalence, patient characteristics and complications of HPN treatment. Material and methods. HPN w.s given to 202 patients(115 F, 87 M) 34%w.th short-bow.l syndrome due to inflammatory bow.l disease, 26%w.th cancer, 22%w.th surgical complications and 19%w.th other causes, for a total of 410 catheter years. Results. At the end of 2000, the prevalence of HPN in Denmark w.s 19.2 per million, and the average annual incidence w.s 5.0 per million per year over the 5-year period. The incidence rates of catheter-related bacteraemia and thrombosis w.re 0.48 and 0.02 episodes per catheter year, respectively. The average catheter lasted 1.5 years. Venous inaccessibility w.s never encountered. The 5-year mortality w.s 25%(n = 51). How.ver, only six deaths w.re related to HPN. Three patients died of HPN-related liver failure, tw. died of catheter-related sepsis and one patient died of an embolus induced by a catheter thrombus. Conclusions. Since its introduction in 1970 in Denmark, HPN has evolved from an experimental approach to a standardized therapy for patients w.th intestinal failure. Although HPN morbidity is increasing slightly compared w.th that reported in earlier surveys, HPN-induced mortality is still less than 1%per year.
