Serum adipokines might predict liver histology findings in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

AIM: To assess significance of serum adipokines to determine the histological severity of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.METHODS: Patients with persistent elevation in serum aminotransferase levels and well-defined characteristics of fatty liver at ultrasound were enrolled. Individuals with a history of alcohol consumption, hepatotoxic medication, viral hepatitis or known liver disease were excluded. Liver biopsy was performed to confirm nonalcoholic liver disease(NAFLD). The degrees of liver steatosis, lobular inflammation and fibrosis were determined based on the non-alcoholic fatty liver activity score(NAS) by a single expert pathologist. Patients with a NAS of five or higher were considered to have steatohepatitis. Those with a NAS of two or lower were defined as simple fatty liver. Binary logistic regression was used to determine the independent association of adipokines with histological findings. Receiver operating characteristic(ROC) analysis was employed to determine cut-off values of serum adipokines to discriminate the grades of liver steatosis,lobular inflammation and fibrosis. RESULTS: Fifty-four participants aged 37.02 ± 9.82 were enrolled in the study. Higher serum levels of visfatin, IL-8, TNF-α levels were associated independently with steatosis grade of more than 33% [β = 1.08(95%CI: 1.03-1.14), 1.04(95%CI: 1.008-1.07), 1.04(95%CI: 1.004-1.08), P < 0.05]. Elevated serum IL-6 and IL-8 levels were associated independently with advanced lobular inflammation [β = 1.4(95%CI: 1.09-1.8), 1.07(95%CI: 1.003-1.15), P < 0.05]. Similarly, higher TNF-α, resistin, and hepcidin levels were associated independently with advanced fibrosis stage [β = 1.06(95%CI: 1.002-1.12), 19.86(95%CI: 2.79-141.19), 560.72(95%CI: 5.98-5255.33), P < 0.05]. Serum IL-8 and TNF-α values were associated independently with the NAS score, considering a NAS score of 5 as the reference value [β = 1.05(95%CI: 1.01-1.1), 1.13(95%CI: 1.04-1.22), P < 0.05]. This narrative review aimed to have an algorithmic approach to microphthalmos by a systematic search.The definition can be related to a number of special phenotypes.In the more challenging cases of complex microphthalmos,relative anterior microphthalmos,and nanophthalmos,the surgeon can approach these cases more safely if they have a deep understanding of the anatomical variations and ideal formulae for intraocular lens computation and knows how to avoid intra-and post-operative complications.In this article,we review the criteria by which we recognize and describe pre-,intra-,and post-operative considerations,as well as discuss the ideal intraocular lenses for microphthalmos,given the intricate varieties of small eye phenotypes.

Er_(2)TiO_(5)@Ag nanocomposites:Enhanced photocatalysis and bacteria inactivation,and cytotoxicity

In this study,we successfully synthesized Er_(2)TiO_(5)@Ag nanocomposites(NCPs) using the ultrasonicmediated sol-gel technique to create a multifunctional material with enhanced photocatalytic and antibacterial properties.The visible light photocatalytic activities of Er_(2)TiO_(5) nanoparticles(NPs) and Er_(2)TiO_(5)@Ag NCPs were systematically evaluated under various conditions,including different concentrations of Basic Blue 41(BB 41) dye and photocatalyst.The results reveal a remarkable improvement in the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of Er_(2)TiO_(5)@Ag NCPs(95%) compared to Er_(2)TiO_(5) NPs(80%).Furthermore,the antibacterial efficacy of Er_(2)TiO_(5) NPs and Er2TiO_5@Ag NCPs were extensively examined against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.Notably,Er_(2)TiO_(5)@Ag NCPs exhibit significantly higher minimum bactericidal concentration(MBC) values compared to Er_(2)TiO_(5) NPs.The antibacterial effect of Er_(2)TiO_(5)@Ag NCPs is particularly pronounced against S.aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa,while demonstrating moderate effects on Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis.To assess the biocompatibility of the synthesized materials,we investigated their internalization by MCF-7 cells.Encouragingly,both Er_(2)TiO_(5) NPs and Er_(2)TiO_(5)@Ag NCPs are found to be effectively internalized by the cells,suggesting their potential application in biomedical fields.Intriguingly,our study unveils the exceptional potential of Er_(2)TiO_(5)@Ag NCPs as a dual-action solution,simultaneously possessing enhanced photocatalytic efficiency and potent antibacterial properties.This multifunctional nanocomposite not only outperforms Er_(2)TiO_(5) and Ag but also paves the way for innovative applications in sustainable environmental remediation and advanced biomedical technologies,promising a brighter and cleaner future.

The global,prevalence,and risk factors of postoperative fever after percutaneous nephrolithotomy:A systematic review and meta-analysis

Objective:This study aimed to explore the global,prevalence,and risk factors of fever after percutaneous nephrolithotomy(PCNL)by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis.Methods:The high-sensitivity searching was conducted without time limitation until December 30,2020 in Web of Sciences,Scopus,and PubMed based on inclusion and exclusion criteria.Results:The prevalence rates of fever and sepsis among patient undergoing PCNL were estimated 9.5%(95%confidence interval[CI]:9.3%-9.7%),and 4.5%(95%CI:4.2%-4.8%),respectively.Nephrostomy tube was used in 9.96%(95%CI:9.94%-9.97%)of patients.The mean preoperative white blood cells of patients were 6.401×109/L;18.3%and 4.55%of patients were considered as the positive urinary culture and pyuria,respectively.About 20.4%of patients suffered from residual stones.The odds ratios(ORs)of fever in patients who suffering from diabetes mellitus,hydronephrosis,staghorn stones,and blood transfusion were 4.62(95%CI:2.95-7.26),1.04(95%CI:0.81-1.34),2.57(95%CI:0.93-7.11),and 2.65(95%CI:1.62-4.35),respectively.Patients who underwent PCNL in prone position were more likely to develop fever(OR:1.23;95%CI:0.75-2.00)than patients in supine position.Conclusion:The current study showed that patients who suffer from diabetes mellitus,hydronephrosis,staghorn stones,nephrostomy tube or double-J stent,blood transfusion,and also patients who underwent PCNL in prone position surgery are more likely to develop a postoperative fever after PCNL.

研究由开孔聚合物和金属/聚合物泡沫芯制成的轻质夹层板的力学性能和能量吸收性能。通过结合聚合物树脂的增材制造和三层金属(Ni/Ni-Cu/Ni)的电沉积制备多层夹层板,每英寸孔数(PPI)为4、5和6。测试样品在单轴压缩变形过程中的屈服强度,计算其能量吸收密度、互补能和比吸收能(SEA)。结果表明,与相同厚度的纯Ni和Cu夹层板相比,复合夹层板的性能有明显改善。增加PPI和金属层可提高力学性能和能量吸收性能,当PPI为6时,屈服强度(能量吸收密度)由聚合物夹层板的0.12 MPa(0.12MJ/m^(3))提高到三层金属夹层板的1.83MPa(0.67 MJ/m^(3))。对夹层板结构归一化能量的研究表明,夹层板具有可预测的塑性变形行为,多金属层改善了新型夹层板的力学性能。其能量吸收性能的显著增强可保证材料在不同行业的独特应用。

BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer(CRC)is the third most frequent and the second most fatal cancer.The search for more effective drugs to treat this disease is ongoing.A better understanding of the mechanisms of CRC development and progression may reveal new therapeutic strategies.Ubiquitin-specific peptidases(USPs),the largest group of the deubiquitinase protein family,have long been implicated in various cancers.There have been numerous studies on the role of USPs in CRC;however,a comprehensive view of this role is lacking.AIM To provide a systematic review of the studies investigating the roles and functions of USPs in CRC.METHODS We systematically queried the MEDLINE(via PubMed),Scopus,and Web of Science databases.RESULTS Our study highlights the pivotal role of various USPs in several processes implicated in CRC:Regulation of the cell cycle,apoptosis,cancer stemness,epithelial–mesenchymal transition,metastasis,DNA repair,and drug resistance.The findings of this study suggest that USPs have great potential as drug targets and noninvasive biomarkers in CRC.The dysregulation of USPs in CRC contributes to drug resistance through multiple mechanisms.CONCLUSION Targeting specific USPs involved in drug resistance pathways could provide a novel therapeutic strategy for overcoming resistance to current treatment regimens in CRC.

Thermal energy storage technology has the advantages of high energy storage density,small size,and high energy conversion efficiency.It is one of the key energy storage technologies and an important way to achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals.Phase change materials (PCMs) offer this opportunity to store high amount of energy and release it in the form of latent heat when needed,and therefore have the advantage of being capable to alleviate the intrinsic intermittency of renewable power production,especially in wind and solar farms.

Isoimperatorin alleviates acetic acid-induced colitis in rats

Objective:To investigate the effect of isoimperatorin on histopathological and biochemical changes in acetic acid-induced colitis rats.Methods:Colitis was induced by intracolonic administration of acetic acid solution(4%v/v)in rats.Rats were divided into six groups including the sham group,the negative control group,the dexamethasone-treated group,and the groups treated with isoimperatorin(0.1,1,and 10 mg/kg/d by gavage).The treatments were administered for three days and then colonic status was assessed by macroscopic,histopathological,and biochemical analyses.Results:Isoimperatorin significantly alleviated colonic damage in a dose-dependent manner and improved histological changes in rats with acetic acid-induced colitis.It also significantly reduced myeloperoxidase,TNF-α,IL-1β,and malodialdehyde levels.Conclusions:Isoimperatorin alleviates acetic acid-induced colitis in rats and may be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of colitis.

Myelopathy as a Presentation of Cervical Spine Metastasis: A Case Report

Cervical myelopathy is a consequence of spinal cord compression in the cervical spine. Degenerative cervical spondylosis, osteophytes, discosteophyte complex, degenerative spondylolisthesis and hypertrophy of ligamentum flavum are the main etiologies of cervical myelopathy. Metastasis to cervical spine could be a rare cause of cervical myelopathy. The present study is a case report;presented a 36-year-old male with severe pain in cervical region, gait disability and impairment in sensory and motor function of upper left extremity. The patient had a history of thyroidectomy and cervical lymph node dissection due to follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) with improper follow-ups. He was diagnosed with metastatic cervical myelopathy and underwent surgical treatment. Cervical myelopathy due to metastasis is a rare condition and only few cases have been reported so far. So myelopathies can be a complication of metastatic cancers, and it should be considered by health professionals.

微生物介导砷甲基化是砷生物地球化学循环中的重要过程.已有研究表明,腐殖质添加能促进稻田土壤厌氧微生物砷甲基化,但其关键机制尚不明确.本研究以砷污染稻田土壤中分离的一株砷甲基化功能厌氧发酵梭菌Clostridium sporogenes LHA6为对象,探究富里酸对梭菌细胞代谢活性的影响,并解析其与砷甲基化效率的内在关系.结果表明,相比对照处理,特定浓度(0.5~2 g·L^(-1))富里酸处理中菌株LHA6的水溶态和细胞结合态甲基砷生成量分别增加25.7%~84.4%和39.8%~60.4%,挥发性甲基砷产物增加0.68~1.86倍,主要产物形态为二甲基砷及其氢化物.综合电化学、代谢物和基因表达定量等方法证实:富里酸可作为胞外电子受体,抑制梭菌胞内发酵产氢活性,增加NADH/NAD+比率;同时,富里酸存在时梭菌显著上调S-腺苷甲硫氨酸(SAM)合成相关基因转录活性,增强SAM合成代谢通量,很可能是富里酸促进梭菌产生甲基砷及其氢化物的关键机制.本研究系统揭示了富里酸调控梭菌细胞代谢,进而强化其砷甲基化及挥发的砷解毒机制,获得了对砷的生物地球化学循环的新认知,有望为土壤砷污染控制提供新思路.
