A novel T cell-based vaccine capable of stimulating long-term functional CTL memory against B 16 melanoma via CD40L signaling

The ultimate goal of antitumor vaccines is to develop memory CD8＋ cytotoxic T lymphocytes （CTLs）, which are critical mediators of antitumor immunity. We previously demonstrated that the ovalbumin （OVA）-specific CD4＋ T cell-based （OVA-TExo） vaccine generated using OVA-pulsed dendritic cell （DCovA）-released exosomes （EXOovA） stimulate CTL responses via IL-2 and costimulatory CD80 signaling. To assess the potential involvement of other costimulatory pathways and to define the key constituent of costimulation for memory CTL development, we first immunized wild-type （WT） C57BIJ6 and gene-knockout mice with WT CD4~ OVA-TExo cells or OVA-TExo cells with various molecular deficiencies. We then assessed OVA-specific primary and recall CTL responses using PE-H-2Kb/ 0VA257_264 tetramer and FITC-anti-CD8 antibody staining by flow cytometry. We also examined antitumor immunity against the OVA-expressing B16 melanoma cell line BL6-1OovA. We demonstrated that CD4＋ OVA-TExo cells stimulated more efficient CTL responses compared to DCovA. By assessing primary and recall CTL responses in mice immunized with OVA-TExo or with OVA-TExo lacking the costimulatory molecules CD4OL, 4-1BBL or OX4OL, we demonstrated that these costimulatory signals are dispensable for CTL priming by OVA-TExo. Interestingly, CD4OL, but not 4-1BBL or OX4OL, plays a crucial role in the development of functional memory CTLs against BL6-1OovA tumors. Overall, this work suggests that a novel CD4＋ T cell-based vaccine that is capable of stimulating long-term functional CTL memory via CD40L signaling may represent a novel, efficient approach to antitumor vaccination.

Effect on Landau damping rates for a non-Maxwellian distribution function consisting of two electron populations

In many physical situations where a laser or electron beam passes through a dense plasma,hot low-density electron populations can be generated,resulting in a particle distribution function consisting of a dense cold population and a small hot *** of such low-density electron distributions can alter the wave damping rate.A kinetic model is employed to study the Landau damping of Langmuir waves when a small hot electron population is present in the dense cold electron population with non-Maxwellian distribution *** of plasma from Maxwellian distributions significantly alters the damping rates as compared to the Maxwellian *** damping is found for highly nonMaxwellian distributions as well as plasmas with a higher density and hot electron *** of weak damping is also established when the distribution contains broadened flat tops at the low energies or tends to be *** results may be applied in both experimental and space physics regimes.

Minimally invasive procedures on the lumbar spine

Degenerative disease of the lumbar spine is a common and increasingly prevalent condition that is often implicated as the primary reason for chronic low back pain and the leading cause of disability in the western world. Surgical management of lumbar degenerative disease has historically been approached by way of open surgical procedures aimed at decompressing and/or stabilizing the lumbar spine. Advances in technology andsurgical instrumentation have led to minimally invasive surgical techniques being developed and increasingly used in the treatment of lumbar degenerative disease. Compared to the traditional open spine surgery, minimally invasive techniques require smaller incisions and decrease approach-related morbidity by avoiding muscle crush injury by self-retaining retractors, preventing the disruption of tendon attachment sites of important muscles at the spinous processes, using known anatomic neurovascular and muscle planes, and minimizing collateral soft-tissue injury by limiting the width of the surgical corridor. The theoretical benefits of minimally invasive surgery over traditional open surgery include reduced blood loss, decreased postoperative pain and narcotics use, shorter hospital length of stay, faster recover and quicker return to work and normal activity. This paper describes the different minimally invasive techniques that are currently available for the treatment of degenerative disease of the lumbar spine.

Ethnobotanical inventory and folk uses of indigenous plants from Pir Nasoora National Park,Azad Jammu and Kashmir

Population Variation and Food Habits of Ranid Frogs in the Rice-Based Cropping System in Gujranwala Region,Pakistan

The current study aims to investigate the population variation and food habits of ranid frogs in the rice-based cropping system in District Gujranwala,*** population in the study area was estimated using capture,mark and release method whereas food habits of the species were studied by analysis of stomach *** results showed the highest average population was found during August 2009(93.10±18.64/ha) while the lowest from December 2008 to February *** seasonal populations existed in summer 2009,whereas winter 2008 sizes were at a *** content analysis of the species revealed percent frequency(% F) of occurrence of insects(80.3),earthworms(28.5),whole frogs(15.8),bone pieces(22.5),rodents(1.66),vegetation(5.0),soil particles(13.3) and some unidentified material(7.5) in all the stomach *** frequently consumed prey items were insects(30% by volume),although frogs also preyed upon conspecifics and *** recovered from the stomach contents were identified as belonging to Orthoptera,Lepidoptera,Coleoptera,Diptera,Odonata and Homoptera as well as the class *** recovered from the stomach contents were compared to those captured from the study area.

Introduction:Urban flora is an important component of human-dominated ecosystems that links urban dwellers with *** study aims at compiling and analysing the alien and native vascular plant species of some selected habitats in the Srinagar city,Kashmir,***:Bi-seasonal sampling was employed and each habitat type(viz.,graveyards,grasslands,orchards and wastelands)was sampled at seven different ***:The number of species recorded from graveyards was 96;from grasslands 112;141 from orchards and 110 from *** level of invasion among habitats varied from 67.27%to 68.75%,with a mean value of 67.86%;out of clubbed species list,64.84%were ***,Poaceae,Brassicaceae and Fabaceae were the biggest families in all four habitat ***:Our research shows that across habitats,alien plant species are the predominant part of their floras.
