Multidrug resistance Acinetobacter species at the intensive care unit,Aseer Central Hospital,Saudi Arabia:A one year analysis

Objective:To identify and to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of Acinetobacter baumannii(***) clinical isolates from ICU at Aseer Central ***:The study was conducted in the Intensive Care Unit,Aseer Central Hospital,Saudi Arabia over 13 months period(2014-2015).Acinetobacter species(n= 105) were isolated from various clinical *** were identified using selected phenotypic criteria and confirmed using the Vitek 2 automated *** system was used to determine the susceptibilities of 21 antimicrobial ***,isolates and drug data were analyzed using the SPSS statistical software package to determine some epidemiological and microbiological ***:Of the 105 stains,*** accounted for 49(46.67%),*** complex,19(18.09%),***/haemolyticus 32(30.47),Acinetobacter haemolyticus 4(3.81%),Acinetobater lwoffii 1(0.95%) and unidentified Acinetobater species 2(1.3%).Of the 105 Acinetobacter strains,103(98.1%) were found multidrug resistant(MDR).*** strain were 100% sensitive to colistin and 74.5% to trimethoprim + *** remaining 19 antimicrobial agents revealed low or no sensitivities:amikacin 16.3%; ampicillin 7.7%; ceftazidime 7.3%.Distribution of similar sensitivities was shown by other Acinetobacter *** number of isolates from males and females indicates no statistical variation(P=0.867) whereas age groups showed significant differences(P= 0.008) as it is clear from the high percentage of infected individuals more than 60 years followed by those aged 20 to 29 years old(19.05%).Upper respiratory tract(30.48%),lower respiratory tract(47.65%) and subcutaneous tissue(9.5%) were the main sources of Acinetobacter *** mean numbers of isolates from these specimens indicate no discrepancy between specimens(P=0.731).Conclusions:Acinetobacterspecies including *** were found MDR(98.1%) according to the current Acinetobacter *** categorization.A

Seroprevalence of brucellosis among exposed agro-pastoral communities in southern Saudi Arabia

Objective: To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of brucellosis in human and animal’s communities in southern Saudi ***: A cross-sectional sero-epidemiological study was conducted in Aseer and Jazan, Saudi Arabia(October 2017-October 2018). Human serum samples(n=339) were initially screened for Brucella antibodies and positive samples were further titrated for Brucella antibodies by immunocapture assay(titer of ≥1:320 as positive). Animal samples(n=828) were screened using the Rose Bengal test. Relationship status was dichotomized to measure and predict independent contributions to variations in human using univariate and multivariate stepwise binary logistic regression model. Results: The rate of brucellosis among the 339 human samples in the two regions was 33.9%, and the rate of acute brucellosis was 12.4%. The rate of brucellosis in animals was 4.7%. Human brucellosis among the target groups was higher in northwestern Aseer(53.3%) compared to Southeastern Aseer(25.9%) and Jazan region(20.6%). The disease was more prevalent among non-Saudi nationals(35.2%) compared to Saudis(30.5%). The rate of brucellosis among butchers and shepherds was 37.5% and 37.2%, respectively. The rate of brucellosis was 37.8% in people over 30 years of age. Our univariate analysis showed that residing in Aseer region(OR: 2.60, 95% CI: 1.50-4.40), especially residing in northwestern Aseer region(OR: 4.40, 95% CI: 2.40-7.90), frequent consumption of raw meat(OR: 2.90, 95% CI: 1.50-5.50), shepherds(OR: 2.10, 95% CI: 0.80-5.30), owning sheep(OR: 2.20, 95% CI: 1.10-4.40), daily contact with animals(OR: 2.10, 95% CI: 0.75-5.80), and those > 30-year-old(OR: 1.50, 95% CI: 1.00-2.40) were significantly associated with increased risks of brucellosis. The current study aimed at evaluating the capabilities of seven advanced machine learning techniques(MLTs),including,Support Vector Machine(SVM),Random Forest(RF),Multivariate Adaptive Regression Spline(MARS),Artificial Neural Network(ANN),Quadratic Discriminant Analysis(QDA),Linear Discriminant Analysis(LDA),and Naive Bayes(NB),for landslide susceptibility modeling and comparison of their *** machine learning algorithms with spatial data types for landslide susceptibility mapping is a vitally important *** study was carried out using GIS and R open source software at Abha Basin,Asir Region,Saudi ***,a total of 243 landslide locations were identified at Abha Basin to prepare the landslide inventory map using different data *** the landslide areas were randomly separated into two groups with a ratio of 70%for training and 30%for validating *** landslide-variables were generated for landslide susceptibility modeling,which include altitude,lithology,distance to faults,normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI),landuse/landcover(LULC),distance to roads,slope angle,distance to streams,profile curvature,plan curvature,slope length(LS),and *** area under curve(AUC-ROC)approach has been applied to evaluate,validate,and compare the MLTs *** results indicated that AUC values for seven MLTs range from 89.0%for QDA to 95.1%for *** findings showed that the RF(AUC=95.1%)and LDA(AUC=941.7%)have produced the best performances in comparison to other *** outcome of this study and the landslide susceptibility maps would be useful for environmental protection.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)are ubiquitous environmental contaminants of growing concern due to their potential ecological and human health *** study presents a comprehensive assessment of PAHs contamination in the surface sediments of Burullus Lake,a vital and second largest delta lake in *** aim was to evaluate the eco-toxicity and potential health risks associated with the presence of these *** seven sediment samples were collected from various drains in the southern part of Burullus *** extraction method was employed to extract PAHs(16PAHs)from the sediment ***,target compounds were located using *** results showed that samples contained PAHs levels ranging from 0.038×10^(-6)to 0.459×10^(-6),which is considered heavily polluted by the european standard for PAHs ***,there was no apparent source of PAHs in the elKhashah drain or the Brinbal Canal,as HPLC found none of the *** most prevalent compound in sediment samples along the study area was *** diagnostic indices in the present study indicated that the hydrocarbons in the region originated from pyrolytic and man-made sources along the drains of Burullus *** principal component analysis(PCA)and diagnostic ratios revealed that coal combustion and pyrolytic sources were responsible for the PAHs contamination in the surface *** non-carcinogenic risk(HI),which is the product of the HQs for the adult and child populations,respectively,was *** values under 1,therefore,demonstrated that they had no carcinogenic effects on human *** and MeQs in the sediments of Burullus Lake do not have a cancer-causing impact on *** the safety of nearby wildlife,aquatic life,and people,all activities that raise petroleum hydrocarbon levels in Burullus Lake must be adequately regulated and *** to the ecological risk assessment,there is little chance that PAHs will be found

Nephroprotective effects of Zingiber zerumbet Smith ethyl acetate extract against paracetamol-induced nephrotoxicity and oxidative stress in rats

Paracetamol (PCM) overdose can cause nephrotoxicity with oxidative stress as one of the possible mechanisms mediating the event. In this study, the effects of ethyl acetate extract of Zingiber zerumbet rhizome [200 mg per kg of body weight (mg/kg) and 400 mg/kg] on PCM-induced nephrotoxicity were examined. Rats were divided into five groups containing 10 rats each. The control group received distilled water while other groups were treated with extract alone (400 mg/kg), PCM alone (750 mg/kg), 750 mg/kg PCM+200 mg/kg extract (PCM+ 200-extract), and 750 mg/kg PCM+400 mg/kg extract (PCM+400-extract), respectively, for seven consecutive days. The Z. zerumbet extract was given intraperitoneally concurrent with oral administration of PCM. Treatment with Z. zerumbet extract at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg prevented the PCM-induced nephrotoxicity and oxidative impairments of the kidney, as evidenced by a significantly reduced (Pevel of plasma creatinine, plasma and renal malondialdehyde (MDA), plasma protein carbonyl, and renal advanced oxidation protein product (AOPP). Furthermore, both doses were also able to induce a significant increment (Penal levels of glutathione (GSH) and plasma superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. The nephroprotective effects of Z. zerumbet extract were confirmed by a reduced intensity of renal cellular damage, as evidenced by histological findings. Moreover, Z. zerumbet extract administered at 400 mg/kg was found to show greater protective effects than that at 200 mg/kg. In conclusion, ethyl acetate extract of Z. zerumbet rhizome has a protective role against PCM-induced nephrotoxicity and the process is probably mediated through its antioxidant properties.

We study the problem of stabilizing a distributed linear system on a subregion of its geometrical domain. We are concerned with two methods： the first approach enables us to characterize a stabilizing control via the steady state Riccati equation, and the second one is based on decomposing the state space into two suitable subspaces and studying the projections of the initial system onto such subspaces. The obtained results are performed through various examples.
