NAT2 polymorphism in Omani gastric cancer patients-risk predisposition and clinicopathological associations

AIM： To study whether N-acetyltransferase 2 （NAT2） genotypes and phenotypes are associated with increased risk factor for gastric cancer in Omani patients and to study the clinico-pathological correlations and the prognostic significance of NAT2. METHODS： Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood of 100 gastric cancer patients and 100 control subjects. NAT2 genotyping was performed using DNA sequencing. The prognostic significance of NAT2 and other clinicopathological features was assessed by univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS： We observed no significant association between NAT2 genotypes and phenotypes and gastric cancer risk. The IVAT2 phenotype polymorphisms and gastric cancer risk predisposition were not modified by concomitant Hpylori infection and smoking. There was no significant association between NAT2 and clinicopathological features, and NAT2 had no independent prognostic significance. CONCLUSION： In the current study, NAT2 genotypes and phenotypes are not associated with gastric cancer risk predisposition. Moreover NAT2 phenotypes had no clinicopathological associations or prognostic significance.

Investigation for Uranium Dispersion Adjacent to Cretaceous Phosphatic Outcrops in al-Nassrieh Basin, Southern Palmyrides, Syria

A detailed radiometric survey including soil gas radon measurements and field gammaray survey, in accordance with geochemical and geological investigations were carried out in alNassrieh Basin（central Syria）, for the purpose of uranium exploration. Thirty-six samples were collected from various lithofacies of the survey area and analyzed by γ-ray spectrometric technique for determining the concentration values of major radioelements. The relationships between the concentrations of equivalent e U, e Th, and their ratios were examined in order to define their trend of variations and evaluate the degree of uranium remobilization and redistribution. although the initial results indicate that uranium enrichment is mostly restricted to the Upper Cretaceous phosphate rocks, a considerable portion of uranium appeared to be leached out of the primary phosphatic source and dispersed in the adjacent recent sediments. Further, notable increases of radon level associated with relatively high values of uranium concentration and gamma count rates were found to be spatially correlated with the transition zone between the marine Paleogene and continental Neogene formations throughout the study basin. This observation demonstrates the importance of the concerned zone as a suitable geological environment for hosting probable uranium mineralization along a chemically reducing interface where surface water of terrestrial and marine origin mingled at depth and away from surficial conditions.

Resistance to acid degradation,sorptivity,and setting time of geopolymer mortars

Experimental evaluations were conducted to determine the water sorptivity,setting time,and resistance to a highly acidic environment,of mortar with alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag(GBS)binder and also of combinations of fly ash and GBS *** were activated using mixtures of NaOH and Na_(2)SiO_(3)*** molarity of NaOH in the mixtures ranged from 10 mol·L^(−1)to 16 mol·L^(−1),and the Na_(2)SiO_(3)/NaOH ratio was varied from 1.5 to *** samples were produced using three binder combinations:1)GBS as the only binder;2)blended binder with a slag-to-fly ash ratio of 3:1;and 3)mixed binder with 1:1 ratio of slag to fly *** samples were mixed and cured at(22±2)°C till the day of the *** impact of activator solution alkalinity,activator ratio Na_(2)SiO_(3)/NaOH,GBS content on the rate of water absorption were *** 7,28,and 90 d of immersion in a 10%sulfuric acid solution,the resistance of a geopolymer matrix to degradation was assessed by measuring the change in sample *** influence of solution alkalinity and relative fly ash content on setting times was ***-activated mortar with a slag-to-fly ash ratio of 3:1 had the least sorptivity compared to the two other binder combinations,at each curing age,and for mortars made with each of the NaOH alkaline activator *** sorptivity decreased with age and sodium hydroxide concentrations,suggesting the production of geopolymerization *** reduction in weight of sample occurred after immersion in the strong acid H_(2)SO_(4)solution for three months,regardless of binder *** was due to the synthesis of hydration and geopolymerization products in the presence of curing water,which outweighed the degradation of the geopolymer matrix caused by sulfuric acid.

The genus Assilina is a taxon within the Nummulitacea that appeared early in the Ypresian(Early Eocene)and continued until the end of the Lutetian(Middle Eocene).Thus,this taxon could be useful for the chronostratigraphy of this time *** Eocene rocks in southern Galala,Egypt are exposed at Bir *** section includes marl sediments with debris flow shallow-marine facies deposits laid down during early Eocene times and includes fossils of large foraminifera:Assilina placentula Deshayes,1838 and Nummulites burdigalensis de la Harpe,*** are systematically treated,described and *** burdigalensis belongs to the *** group,and Assilina placentula belongs to the group of Assilina *** assumption is based on qualitative morphology and quantitative *** species,together with Operculina libyca Schwager,1883,enable the assignment of the Bir Dakhl(D5-40 Section)to the Early Eocene,Ypresian(SBZ10 of Serra-Kiel et al.,1998)supporting an earlier opinion that Assilina placentula belongs to that zone in the calibrated larger foraminiferal biostratigraphic zonation.

THIRD ORDER SHEAR DEFORMATION MODEL FOR LAMINATED SHELLS WITH FINITE ROTATIONS:FORMULATION AND CONSISTENT LINEARIZATION

The paper presents an approach for the formulation of general laminated shells based on a third order shear deformation theory. These shells undergo finite (unlimited in size) rotations and large overall motions but with small strains. A singularity-free parametrization of the rotation field is adopted. The constitutive equations, derived with respect to laminate curvilinear coordinates, are applicable to shell elements with an arbitrary number of orthotropic layers and where the material principal axes can vary from layer to layer. A careful consideration of the consistent linearization procedure pertinent to the proposed parametrization of finite rotations leads to symmetric tangent stiffness matrices. The matrix formulation adopted here makes it possible to implement the present formulation within the framework of the finite element method as a straightforward task.

Do statins reduce the mortality rate in stroke patients treated with systemic thrombolysis in a 5-year single-center study?

The present study investigated the association between pre-treatment with a cholesterol-lowering drug(statin) or new setting hereon and the effect on the mortality rate in patients with acute ischemic stroke who received intravenous systemic thrombolysis. During a 5-year period(starting in October 2008), 542 consecutive stroke patients who received intravenous systemic thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator(rt-PA) at the Department of Neurology, University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Lübeck, Germany, were included. Patients were characterized according to statins. The primary endpoint was mortality;it was assessed twice: in hospital and 3 months after discharge. The secondary outcome was the rate of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage. Of the 542 stroke patients examined(mean age 72 ± 13 years;51% women, mean National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale(NIHSS) score 11), 138 patients(25.5%) had been pretreated with statin, while in 190 patients(35.1%) statin therapy was initiated during their stay in hospital, whereas 193(35.6%) never received statins. Patients pre-treated with statin were older and more frequently had previous illnesses(arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus and previous cerebral infarctions), but were comparably similarly affected by the stroke(NIHSS 11 vs. 11;P = 0.76) compared to patients who were not on statin treatment at the time of cerebral infarction. Patients pretreated with statin did not differ in 3-month mortality from those newly treated to a statin(7.6% vs. 8%;P = 0.9). Interestingly, the group of patients pretreated with statin showed a lower rate of in hospital mortality(6.6% vs. 17.0;P = 0.005) and 3-month mortality(10.7% vs. 23.7%;P = 0.005) than the group of patients who had no statin treatment at all. The same effect was seen for patients newly adjusted to a statin during the hospital stay compared to patients who did not receive statins(3-month mortality: 7.1% vs. 23.7%;P < 0.001).
