Cross Sectional Study of Skin Carriage and Enterotoxigenicity of Staphylococcus aureus among Food Handlers

The prevalence of enterotoxigenic Staphylococcus aureus was investigated among 200 participants working in three different food processing plants in Egypt. Using skin swabs, 75 (38%) of the 200 tested persons were positive for the presence of S. aureus. Of the S. aureus positive persons, 28 (14%) harboured S. aureus produced staphylococcal enterotoxins. The serotypes of these enterotoxins were enterotoxin A (68%), enterotoxin B (36%), enterotoxin C (46%) and enterotoxin D (18%). Some of these isolates produced more than one type of enterotoxins namely AB, AC, BC, BD, ABC and ACD. Analysis of risk factors implicated in skin carriage of S. aureus as age, gender, marital status, education, duration in employment, frequency and method of hand wash and incidence of chronic skin infection revealed insignificant association with staphylococcal skin carriage. The obtained results put forth the risk of food contracting contamination with enterotoxigenic strains of S. aureus owing to skin colonization of S. aureus among food handlers.

The Relationship between Circulating Levels of Osteopontin with Carotid Intima-Media Thickness in Children on Regular Hemodialysis

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Osteopontin (OPN) is a critical factor in developing atherosclerosis and increases the risk for a major adverse cardiovascular event. Aim: To investigate osteopontin serum levels in hemodialysis children and detect the association between the main arteries’ intimal medial thickness (IMT) and peak systolic velocity. Material and Methods: This case-control study included 30 children on regular hemodialysis and 30 children age and sex-matched as controls their age range from 4 to 18 years;we investigated osteopontin serum level in addition to the Doppler ultrasound assessment of intimal medial thickness and peak systolic velocity (PSV) of the main arteries in the same line with the traditional markers of the routine investigations of children on regular hemodialysis. Results: Significantly high osteopontin level in hemodialysis children than the controls was (0.85 ± 0.21 ng/ml) (0.69 ± 0.26 ng/ml), respectively (p = 0.026). A significant increase in the (IMT) of the main arteries, including the carotid and femoral arteries, in the patient’s group than the controls, was (0.51 ± 0.01 mm) (0. 69. ± 0.01 mm) (0.32 ± 0.036 mm) (0.55 ± 0.01), respectively (p = 0.001). There is a strong correlation between (OPN) with the (IMT) of carotid and femoral arteries, a significant positive correlation between (OPN) with urea, creatinine, triglyceride, PTH, ferritin, CRP, and ESR, and a negative correlation with RBCs count and carotid PSV. Conclusion: High osteopontin level is consistent with the increased IMT of the main arteries in hemodialysis children that seem to play a significant role in developing and propagating atherosclerosis in hemodialysis children, evidenced by significant association with inflammatory markers and uremic toxins.

Background: Radial artery catheterization is a fundamental approach that is used as a procedural access in the different catheterization laboratories so our study is a comparison between distal radial artery approach and convential traditional transradial approach to explore the fesibility and safety of coronary angiography and percutanous coronary. Aim of the Work: The purpose of our study is a comparison between the conventional transradial approach versus distal transradial approach for diagnostic and interventional coronary procedures. Materials and Methods: This is a prospective study that included 60 patients who presented to the Cardiology departments in Ahmed Maher Teaching Hospital from December 2018 until October 2019 to perform planned Transradial Coronary Angiography and/or coronary intervention. The study is divided into two groups, group (A) included 30 patients who undergone the procedure through the distal radial approach (The Anatomical Snuffbox)

Influence of Nitrogen Fertilizer and Foliar Application of Salicylic Acid on Wheat

Two cemented plots experiments were carried out during the winter seasons of 2012/2013 and 2013/2014, Soil Salinity Laboratory, Alexandria, Egypt, to study the effect of three levels of salicylic acid (SA) (0, 50, 100 ppm) and three rates of nitrogen fertilizer (75, 100, 125 kg N/feddan) on yield and yield components of wheat (Sakha 93). The experimental design was split plot with four replicates. The results indicated that increasing nitrogen fertilizer rates resulted in significant increase in plant height (cm), number of grain/spike, number of spikes/m2, 1000 grain weight (gm), grain yield (gm/plot), straw yield (gm/plot), and biological yield (gm/plot). Increasing salicylic acid rates resulted in significant increase in all the previous characters, in addition to grain weight/spike (gm). The interactions had no significant effect on the studied characters. The path analysis revealed that 1000 grain weight was the most important character with direct effect of 0.54 followed by number of spikes/m2 with direct effect of 0.33 followed by number of grain/spike with direct effect of 0.16.
