Salt response of the freshwater microalga Scenedesmus obliquus(Turp.)Kutz is modulated by the algal growth phase

Growth and biochemical responses of the coenobial green alga Scenedesmus obliquus to salinity stress were monitored across different phases of *** alga was cultured on BG11 growth medium and subjected to 0,30,100,and 200 mmol/L NaCl for a period of 20 d,during which algal cultures were harvested at 4-d *** salinity-induced inhibition of algal growth was accompanied with prolongation of timing of the different growth *** sharp and progressive salinity-induced inhibition of algal growth rate during the early phase of growth points to salt shock but moderation of inhibition at the subsequent stages of growth means algal acclimation to *** concentrations of chlorophylls a and b,soluble sugars,proteins as well as those of K+and Na+in the alga exhibited peaks at the initiation of the exponential phase of growth,with increasing magnitude in proportion to the increase in the level of ***,whereas soluble sugars of the alga peaked at initiation of the exponential phase,starch concentration progressively increased with culture age,reaching saturation towards the stationary *** the salinity-induced increase in soluble sugars was most evident at the early stages of growth the reverse was true for *** present results point to fast acclimation of *** to salt stress post a brief salt shock,utilizing soluble sugars,K+and Na+for osmotic *** salinity from 0 to 200 mmol/L NaCl led to progressive increase in soluble sugars,proteins,K+and Na+concentrations of the algal cells,particularly at the early stages of ***,the salinity-induced increase in chlorophyll concentration approached a limit at 100 mmol/L NaCl whereas that in starch concentration was more evident at the later stages of growth.

Text-Independent Algorithm for Source Printer Identification Based on Ensemble Learning

Because of the widespread availability of low-cost printers and scanners,document forgery has become extremely *** or signatures are used to protect important papers such as certificates,passports,and identification *** the origins of printed documents is helpful for criminal investigations and also for authenticating digital versions of a document in today’s *** printer identification(SPI)has become increasingly popular for identifying frauds in printed *** paper provides a proposed algorithm for identifying the source printer and categorizing the questioned document into one of the printer classes.A dataset of 1200 papers from 20 distinct(13)laser and(7)inkjet printers achieved significant identification results.A proposed algorithm based on global features such as the Histogram of Oriented Gradient(HOG)and local features such as Local Binary Pattern(LBP)descriptors has been proposed for printer *** classification,Decision Trees(DT),k-Nearest Neighbors(k-NN),Random Forests,Aggregate bootstrapping(bagging),Adaptive-boosting(boosting),Support Vector Machine(SVM),and mixtures of these classifiers have been *** proposed algorithm can accurately classify the questioned documents into their appropriate printer *** adaptive boosting classifier attained a 96%*** proposed algorithm is compared to four recently published algorithms that used the same dataset and gives better classification accuracy.

Background:Accumulatingα-synuclein(α-syn)aggregates in neurons and glial cells are the staples of many synucleinopathy disorders,such as Parkinson’s disease(PD).Since brain adenosine becomes greatly elevated in ageing brains and chronic adenosine A1 receptor(A1R)stimulation leads to neurodegeneration,we determined whether adenosine or A1R receptor ligands mimic the action of known compounds that promoteα-syn aggregation(e.g.,the amphetamine analogue 2-aminoindan)or inhibitα-syn aggregation(e.g.,Rasagiline metabolite 1-aminoindan).In the present study,we determined whether adenosine,A1R receptor agonist N^(6)-Cyclopentyladenosine(CPA)and antago-nist 8-cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine(DPCPX)could directly interact withα-syn to modulateα-syn aggregation and neurodegeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra(SN).Methods:Nanopore analysis and molecular docking were used to test the binding properties of CPA and DPCPX withα-syn in ***-Dawley rats were administered with 7-day intraperitoneal injections of the A1R ligands and 1-and 2-aminoindan,and levels ofα-syn aggregation and neurodegeneration were examined in the SN pars compacta and hippocampal regions using confocal imaging and Western ***:Using nanopore analysis,we showed that the A1R agonists(CPA and adenosine)interacted with the N-terminus ofα-syn,similar to 2-aminoindan,which is expected to promote a“knot”conformation andα-syn *** contrast,the A1R antagonist DPCPX interacted with the N-and C-termini ofα-syn,similar to 1-aminoindan,which is expected to promote a“loop”conformation that preventsα-syn *** docking studies revealed that adenosine,CPA and 2-aminoindan interacted with the hydrophobic core ofα-syn N-terminus,whereas DPCPX and 1-aminoindan showed direct binding to the N-and C-terminal hydrophobic *** imaging and Western blot analyses revealed that chronic treatments with CPA alone or in combination with 2-aminoindan increasedα-syn

Two rare metal coordination complexes of yttrium（Ⅲ） including 1,10-phenanthroline, Y（phen）2（NO3）3 and （phenH）2[Y2（pydc）3（NO3）2.6H2O] （phen= 1,10-phenanthroline, pydc=2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate）, and a proton transfer compound （phenH＋）2（pydc2-） were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, infrared spectra （IR）, nuclear magnetic resonance （NMR） and thermal analysis. The proposed structures of yttrium complexes were exhibited. The in vitro biological activities of the newly synthesized complexes have also been investigated against Bacillus coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. The results showed that yttrium（Ⅲ） complexes including 1,10-phenanthroline exhibited better antibacterial/antifungal activity than their ligands and corresponding compounds.

Calcific tendinitis of the rotator cuff

Calcific tendinitis within the rotator cuff tendon is a common shoulder disorder that should be differentiated from dystrophic calcification as the pathogenesis and natural history of both is totally different. Calcific tendinitis usually occurs in the fifth and sixth decades of life among sedentary workers. It is classified into formative and resorptive phases. The chronic formative phase results from transient hypoxia that is commonlyassociated with repeated microtrauma causing calcium deposition into the matrix vesicles within the chondrocytes forming bone foci that later coalesce. This phase may extend from 1 to 6 years, and is usually asymptomatic. The resorptive phase extends from 3 wk up to 6 mo with vascularization at the periphery of the calcium deposits causing macrophage and mononuclear giant cell infiltration, together with fibroblast formation leading to an aggressive inflammatory reaction with inflammatory cell accumulation, excessive edema and rise of the intra-tendineous pressure. This results in a severely painful shoulder. Radiological investigations confirm the diagnosis and suggest the phase of the condition and are used to follow its progression. Although routine conventional X-ray allows detection of the deposits, magnetic resonance imaging studies allow better evaluation of any coexisting pathology. Various methods of treatment have been suggested. The appropriate method should be individualized for each patient. Conservative treatment includes pain killers and physiotherapy, or "minimally invasive" techniques as needling or puncture and aspiration. It is almost always successful since the natural history of the condition ends with resorption of the deposits and complete relief of pain. Due to the intolerable pain of the acute and severely painful resorptive stage, the patient often demands any sort of operative intervention. In such case arthroscopic removal is the best option as complete removal of the deposits is unnecessary.

Nurses’ Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice Regarding Personal Protective Equipment for the Prevention of COVID-19 in Public Hospitals Khartoum State Sudan 2022

Since December 2019, there had been a series of unexplained cases of pneumonia reported in Wuhan, China, and on 12 January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) named this new virus as the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). The Novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an emerging, rapidly changing global health challenge affecting all sectors, including the health sector. This study aimed to investigate nurses’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding the prevention and control of COVID-19. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among nurses in three public health hospitals in Khartoum state. A self-administered questionnaire was used. A total of 14 knowledge questions were adopted. There are 5 questions constructed for attitude. A total of 12 practice questions were used. Mean score of knowledge considers as follows when the mean more than 75% considers as good knowledge while this percent uses as good practice and poor practice respectively to analyze the mean score differences of knowledge, attitudes, and practices between the independent variables. Spearman correlation was used to assess the relationship between mean knowledge and attitude scores. Results: Of the 101 nurses approached, a total of 100 nurses responded (99.0% response rate). The mean age of the participants was 27.6 (SD 5.3) years, and the majority of the participants were male (293/434, 67.5%). The mean knowledge score was 1.01 (SD 0.100). The mean attitude score was 10.5 (SD 4.1), and 54.8% (238/434) of the participants had a good attitude toward COVID-19. The mean practice score was 1.4176 (SD 1.4176). There was a negative correlation between knowledge and attitude scores (P < -0.014) and between knowledge and practice scores (P < -0.081). Conclusions: The overall levels of knowledge and practice and attitude were good.

Microsurgical Management of Vestibular Schwannomas with Brainstem Compression: Surgical Challenges and Outcome

Background: Vestibular schwannomas exerting brainstem compression with or without hydrocephalus are challenging for neurosurgeons regarding the plan of surgery, operative risk and postoperative sequale. Purpose: To report our experience with the surgical challenges and outcomes for Hannover type T4a & T4b vestibular schwannomas. Methods: Retrospective case study conducted at neurosurgery department, Mansoura University between October 2016 and May 2019 of 16 patients with vestibular schwannoma compressing the brainstem. We reviewed their clinical, radiological, surgical data, incidence of complications and outcome. Results: We had 16 patients: 10 of Hanover grade T4b and 6 of grade T4a. Gross total resection was achieved in 2 cases while subtotal resection was achieved in 5 cases and in the remaining 9 cases;only partial resection was feasible. We had 4 cases of mortality. Among new onset morbidity after surgery, 3 cases had post-operative bulbar manifestation and 4 cases had brainstem dysfunction. Conclusion: Vestibular schwannomas compressing the brain stem are challenging in their clinical presentation, surgery and post-operative outcome. The outcome of patients treated with hydrocephalus prior to vestibular schwannoma surgery is better than those who did initial VS surgery. Patients presented with significant brainstem, bulbar manifestation had worse outcome and needed longer ICU stay and longer time for recovery.
