Risk of Radiation Induced Carotid Artery Stenosis in Supraclavicular Lymph Node Irradiation in Breast Cancer Patients

Background: The risk of carotid vessel stenosis is high after radiotherapy (RT) to neck;however, carotid vessels are unavoidable during supraclavicular (SC-RT) in adjuvant treatment of breast cancer (BC). However, carotid vessels RT dose is less well-understood. We aimed to determine the carotid vessels doses received by different techniques for SC-RT. Materials and Methods: Thirty consecutive BC patients were planned to receive SC-RT and breast after breast conserving surgery (BCS) after taking 5 mm image slices on computed tomography (CT) simulation. Organs at risk (OAR) including carotid vessels, lungs, spinal cord alongwith clinical target volume (CTV) for primary tumor and lymph nodes were delineated. Comparative analysis was done between two treatment plans;three-field conformal radiation therapy (3F-CRT) and four field conformal RT (4F-CRT) for CTV and carotid vessels doses. Results: The 4F-CRT was found better than 3F-3DCRT regarding coverage and homogeneity of the CTV volume. The 98% of the CTV was covered by 84% dose in 3F-CRT and 95% in 4F-CRT (p 0.001). The carotid vessels maximum dose in the in 3F-CRT was 54.5 ± 1.3 Gy compared to 51.6 ± 1.3 Gy in 4F-CRT (p 0.014), however the mean dose did not differ significantly (p value 0.8). The ipsilateral lung dose did not differ between the two techniques (p Value 0.9). Conclusion: The 4F-CRT plan was found better than 3F-CRT in CTV coverage with minimal dose to the carotid vessel and without significant higher dose to the ipsilateral lung.

NANOPOROUS MATERIALS BASED ON SPIROKETAL AND SPIROTHIOKETAL POLYMERS FOR SEPARATING METHANOL-TOLUENE MIXTURE

Organic microporous materials based on spiroketal and spirothioketal polymers were synthesized through 1,3- dioxol-forming polymerization reaction between pentaerythritol or pentaerythritol tetrathiol and different types of cyclohexa- 1,4-dione derivatives. The structure of the prepared polymers was confirmed by NMR spectroscopy and molecular mass measurements. Nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms of the prepared polymers show a large amount of nitrogen adsorbed at low relative pressure indicating microporosity. These polymers have Brunauer Emmitt and Teller （BET） surface areas in the range from 492 （m^2g^-1） to 685 （m^2 g^-1）. The prepared polymers were found to be useful for pervaporation separation of methanol-toluene mixture with a separation factor up to 12.5 and fluxes, varying between 6.7×10-3 kg/（m^2 h） and 13.4 × 10^-3 kg/（m^2 h）.

Synthesis, Characterization and <i>In Vitro</i>Antitumor Evaluation of New Pyrazolo[3,4-d]Pyrimidine Derivatives

A new series of 3-(methylthio)-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine derivatives was synthesized. The structures of the new derivatives were confirmed by the spectral data and elemental analyses. The antitumor activity of this series against human breast adenocarcinoma cell line MCF7 was evaluated. Out of twenty new derivatives, ten were revealed mild to moderate activity compared with doxorubicin as a reference antitumor. Among this new series N-(2-chlorophenyl)-2-(3-(methylthio)-4-oxo-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-5(4H)-yl)acetamide (13a) was found the most active one with IC50 equal to 23 μM.

Utilization of Egyptian Ilmenite Ore for Steel Surface Preparation in Petroleum Field

The construction of gas and oil plants include many items such as steel structures, equipments, piping, tanks and vessels at different conditions such as offshore, onshore, above and underground shall be protected against corrosion by coating. The protective value of a coating system is proportional to the surface preparation;the objectives of the surface preparation are the surface cleanliness and the surface profile of the substrate. The surface preparation is usually achieved by blast cleaning using different types of abrasive. Due to its high hardness and low cost, silica sand has been used extensively for impact abrasion. It is, however, very brittle with most grain disintegrating on impact, causing excessive levels of siliceous dust which is a major health hazard and causes serious environmental pollution. Consequently, it has been banned as impact abrasive material in most countries around the world. Considerable research has been done in the last twenty years to find an impact abrasive material as hard as silica and that respects. So it was important to search for sand substitution among the local abundant minerals in Egypt. Waste product obtained from ilmenite ore extracted from the mine was found to be the most suitable alternative abrasive. This work shows the abrasive types, the occurrence of the ilmenite ore. The chemical properties, physical properties and microscopic examination of the waste were investigated. The obtained result indicates that, the waste product obtained from ilmenite ore can be utilized for abrasion as sand substitution.

Organotin Compounds in Sediments of Northern Lakes, Egypt

This pioneered study is aimed to determine the levels and distributions of organotin compounds (OTCs) in sediment samples collected from five Egyptian lakes located in the southern-eastern Mediterranean Sea. The paper has given an account of and the reasons for the widespread distribution of Tributyltin (TBT) in northern lakes. The percentage of TBT ranged from 4% - 100% OTC revealing recent inputs of TBT. The highest average of TBT (2.84 μg/g Sn dry wt) was measured in lake Edku. Dibutyltin (DBT) was observed at most sampled sites. Relatively higher abundance of DBT was observed in sediments of EL-Burullus (0.69 μg/g Sn dry wt). One of most significant findings to emerge from this study is the absence of any strong and significant correlation between TBT and DBT in sediments from five northern lakes. The absence of such correlation might give a clear evidence that both compounds did not come from the same source. The observed OTC levels indicate some highly localized areas of contamination which are severe enough to cause harmful effects on marine flora and fauna. Except for El-Burllus, Triphenyltin (TPhT) was not measured in sediments of most stations. TPhT was the predominant species in El-Burullus, which indicate a source of pollution mostly originated from industrial and agricultural waste water discharge, organic wastes, commercial fertilizers, chemical wastes and pesticides. The percentages of OTC to total tin ranged from 1% to 35%. El-Brullus, Edku and El-Bardaweel exhibited the highest percentages. As a result of lack of enforcement on the control of OTC, the study has thrown up many questions need further detailed environmental assessment of OTC.

Mercury and Methyl Mercury in Sediments of Northern Lakes-Egypt

Fifty-four sediment samples of the five Northern Egyptian lakes, (Mariout, Edku, El-Burullus, El-Manzallah, and El-Bardaweel) were analyzed to investigate the pollution status of mercury (Hg). The total mercury (T-Hg) content in sediment samples ranged from 15.33 to 171.29 ng·g–1 dry wt).The results showed that T-Hg were lower than the back ground values reported and also lower than the ranges of uncontaminated sediments. Moreover, the T-Hg concentrations in all sediments were under the upper chemical Exceedance level (1 μg·g–1). The concentrations of Methyl mercury (MeHg) in surface sediments of the Northern lakes ranged from 0.002 - 0.023 ng·g–1 dry wt. The contribution of MeHg was less than 0.1% of total mercury concentration with index values from 0.08 - 1.37 ng·g–1;dry wt). MeHg showed insignificant correlation with T-Hg. This suggested that MeHg contents were not controlled by the T-Hg in sediments. The T-Hg and MeHg concentrations were insignificantly correlated with TOC content which indicates that the concentration of T-Hg and MeHg in sediments of Northern lakes were not influence by TOC. The average T-Hg concentration was found in the following order;Mariout > El-Manzallah > El-Burullus > Edku > El-Bardaweel. While the MeHg was found in the order;El-Bardaweel > El-Burullus ≥ El-Manzallah > Mariout > Edku.
