Bronchospasm Diagnosis in Motorcycle Taxi Drivers Exposed to Automotive Pollutants in Porto-Novo

Background: In African cities, chronic exposure to pollutants is the most common public health problem faced daily by motorcycle taxi drivers. In Benin, studies conducted on motorcycle drivers, have shown the presence of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, volatile organic compounds and particulate matter in ambient air, which may affect lung function. Aims: This study aims to diagnose potential respiratory problems among 48 motorcycle taxi drivers (47.02 ± 8.75 years) compared to a control group made up of 52 people (46.38 ± 8.81 years) in Porto-Novo, Benin. Methods: A questionnaire, two exploration pulmonary function tests and two 6-minute walk tests were used to identify symptoms and changes in respiratory variables that reveal the existence of bronchospasm. Results: The frequency of respiratory symptoms noted among motorcycle taxi drivers is higher than that recorded among members of the control group. We observed that motorcycle drivers at rest and after physical effort have significantly lower respiratory variables (FVC, FEV1, PEF, FEF25-75, FEF50 and FEF25) (p < 0.05) than those recoded in control group. Conclusion: It can therefore be concluded that, because of the relatively long duration of exposure among motorcycle taxi drivers, the inhalation of automobile pollutants, may cause respiratory problems in this population.

Low Ankle Brachial Index in Acute Ischemic Stroke: Does ApoE Gene Polymorphism Have a Role?

Background: The existence of asymptomatic peripheral arterial disease among patients with acute ischemic stroke has been studied and proved. Low ankle brachial index (ABI) is considered as a marker of atherosclerosis, and its relation to stroke severity was documented in some studies. The effect of different alleles of ApoE gene on acute ischemic stroke presentation in patients with low ABI is not known. Objective: To study the effect of ApoE gene polymorphism on stroke severity, outcome and recurrence in patients with asymptomatic peripheral arterial disease identified by low ABI. Methods: Patients with acute ischemic stroke were screened for the presence of asymp-tomatic peripheral arterial disease by estimating the ABI using a pocket Doppler ultrasound device. Assay of ApoE gene was done using the real-time PCR technique. Results: Low ABI was present in 31% of patients with acute ischemic stroke. There was no significant difference among patients with different ApoE alleles regarding the severity of their symptoms. Also, there was no significant difference among patients with normal ABI and those with abnormal ABI regarding the ApoE gene polymorphism. Conclusion: The current study showed that there was no significant relation between ApoE gene polymorphism and low ABI in ischemic stroke patients who had asymptomatic peripheral arterial disease.

Genetic Relationships between Cultivated and Wild Olive Trees (Olea Europaea L. Var. Europaea and Var. Sylvestris) Based on Nuclear and Chloroplast SSR Markers

The olive is widely cropped in Tunisia where also oleaster trees thrive all around orchards and in natural sites. Little is known on the genetic relationships between the olive crop and oleaster trees in Tunisia. Fifty-two oleaster trees and fifteen cultivars were sampled from Tunisia. SSR genotyping was performed in polyacrylamide gels after fluorescent labeling. We used seven nuclear and two chloroplast SSR markers. AFC analyses showed close genetic relationships between cultivated and oleaster trees. Genetic relationships were also displayed in a dendrogram based on Unweighted Pair Group Method (UPGMA). Five clusters were defined mixing cultivar and oleaster trees suggesting close relationship between some cultivar and some oleaster trees. One oleaster is single in a cluster. The chlorotype SSR markers show probably three olive origins. Some cultivars have the CE chlorotype originates from the East of the Mediterranean basin, the CCK haplotype originates from Maghreb and the COM chlorotype originates from West Mediterranean. The cultivars were 1) introduced from the East;2) selected in the West;3) or selected in the North Africa region. The Tunisian oleaster trees carry eastern and western Mediterranean chlorotype CCK, COM and CE.

Correlation between SYNTAX Score and Pattern of Risk Factors in Patients Referred for Coronary Angiography in Cardiology Department, Menoufia University

Objectives: The role of SYNTAX (SX) score in assessing the complexity of coronary artery disease (CAD) is well established. In this study we investigate the relationship between conventional risk factors of CAD with its complexity using SX score. Methods: The study consisted of 52 patients with CAD who were admitted to Cardiology Department—Menoufia University Hospitals for elective coronary angiography. The overall SX score was calculated prospectively using the SX score algorithm. Then comparison was done between populations with and without each risk factor. Results: There was a statistically significant correlation between age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia and smoking with SX score results (p 0.05). In a multivariate regression analysis, including conventional risk factors of CAD as independent covariates, it revealed that aging, having diabetes mellitus and smoking were identified as significant independent risk factors for CAD complexity. Conclusion: Advanced age, having diabetes mellitus and cigarette smoking are considered to be independent risk factors for the complexity of CAD. Therefore, when these factors present, we expect that the SX score of the patient to be high indicating a complex CAD.

Evaluation of the Microbiological Quality of Different Moroccan Drinking Water in the Beni Mellal Region

Drinking water is water that does not contain pathogens or chemicals at levels that may be harmful to health. Beni Mellal region, one of the major rich areas in ground and surface water in Morocco (the rivers like Oum Errabia, Darna, ...;Bin el-Ouidane and martyr Ahmed El Hansali dams and sources like Ain Asserdoune, …) is located in the North-Centre of Morocco. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate the microbiological quality of different drinking waters originated from sources, faucets, fountains and wells in the Beni Mellal city and its agricultural surrounding areas. For this, hygienic quality indicator parameters of water quality were determined by assessing the analysis of Total Coliforms Count, Fecal Coliforms Count, streptococcus D and revivable germs while germs such as Anaerobic Sulphite-reducing Bacteria, S. aureus and Salmonella sp, were carried out according to national and international standards. The analysis of the microbiological results found for all the different samples waters investigated in this study revealed that the waters originated from fountains, faucets and sources were proper for main consumption at microbiological point of view while the wells waters were improper for consumption according to norms. Finally, it appears, from the results obtained, that the potential risk of infection of water consumers especially (groundwater) calls for prompt intervention in order to alleviate the potential health impact of water-borne diseases in the community. From this, a proper sanitary survey and implementation of water and sanitation projects in the community is recommended.

Determination of Thermal Conductivity and Porosity of Building Stone from Ultrasonic Velocity Measurements

Ultrasonic velocity measurement, a non-destructive and easy method to apply in both field and laboratory conditions, has increasingly been conducted to determine the physical properties of rock materials. This paper presents an experimental study of the measurement of P-wave velocity, thermal conductivity and porosity of several types of sedimentary, metamorphic, and magmatic rocks. The aim of this study is to predict the rocks properties including their thermal conductivity and porosity using P-wave velocity. For this purpose, the physical properties are determined in the laboratory to obtain correlations between P-wave velocity and physical properties. Consequently, good linear relationships are found between all the determined physical properties and the P-wave velocity measurements.

Preparation, Characterization, and Application of Manganese Oxide Coated Zeolite as Adsorbent for Removal of Copper(II) Ions from Seawater

The present study is aimed to examine the adsorption characteristics of Cu(II) by using the novel cellulose acetate composite and to apply it for the removal of Cu(II) from real wastewater samples. In order to achieve this objective, ethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine and te-traethylenepentanene were used for immobilization of grafted cellulose acetate-nanoscale manganese dioxide. Cellulose was extracted from mangrove species Avicennia marina and converted to cellulose acetate then it was formed composite with nano-manganese dioxide via precipitation of nano-manganese dioxide on it. The composite was grafted with acrylamide monomer before immobilization. The synthesized compounds were used for adsorption of Cu(II) and characterized by FT-IR, TGA and SEM. The adsorption characteristics of synthesized sorbents were optimized. Langmuir and Freundlich models were used to establish sorption equilibria. The analytical applications of these modified materials were applied successfully for the removal of Cu(II).

Expending the Paradigm: Active Surveillance for Intermediate Risk Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the leading male cancer worldwide. There remains a controversy as to which patients have indolent disease and which patients present an aggressive disease needing treatment with intent to cure. Because of quality of life impairment associated with treatment by radiation or surgery, active surveillance (AS) is a valid management option to avoid or differ aggressive treatment. Traditionally, AS was reserved for men with low risk prostate cancer, however intermediate risk patients are more and more found in AS cohorts. The aim of this review is to describe the place of AS in intermediate risk patients and the perspectives offered by such a treatment modality.

Efficacy and Compliance of Oral Iron Poly-Maltose Complex versus Oral Ferrous Sulfate in the Treatment of Iron Deficiency Anemia in Pregnant Women

Objective: To compare the efficacy and compliance of the conventional therapy of iron deficiency anemia (ferrous sulfate) with the new forms of therapy chewable iron tablets: (iron polymaltose complex) in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women. Methods: This Randomized Control Trial study included 290 pregnant women with iron deficiency anemia, and they were randomly allocated to a control group who received ferrous sulfate capsules for two months and study group who received iron polymaltose complex chewable tablets for two months. Complete Blood Picture (hemoglobin level and hematocrit level) and Serum ferritin level were done after four and eight weeks to determine the efficacy. In addition, any complains or side effects had been reported to assess the tolerability of the drugs. Two-factor repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the change in hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels in both groups. Results: There was no statistical significant difference between the two research groups as regards baseline hemoglobin, and at week 4 from onset of treatment (p values = 0.990, 0.112, consecutively). However, there was statistical significant difference on week 8 of continuous drug intake in both groups in which the iron poly maltose complex research group had significantly higher hemoglobin levels (p value = 0.006). Conclusion: The results of the study showed oral iron polymaltose complex increases Hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels more than oral ferrous sulfate and produces less adverse effects than ferrous sulfate.

Adult Intussusception in Patients with Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome: Case Series and Review of Literature

Background: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by gastrointestinal hamartomatous polyps and mucocutaneous pigmentations in the mouth, facial skin, hands & feet. Small bowel obstruction, intussusception, bleeding, intestinal and extra-intestinal malignancies are the major complications of PJS. The aim of this study is to analyze the clinical characteristics, preoperative diagnosis, and surgical management of PJS associated-intussusception in adults. Patients and Methods: This study included 5 cases with intussusception in PJS patients presented to Surgical Oncology Unit, General Surgery Department, Tanta University Hospital, Egypt and Hamad General Hospital, Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar, between October 2011 and March 2016. Patients’ demographics were collected. After thorough clinical examination, abdominal X-ray, US, & CT scan were done. All the patients were submitted to midline laparotomy with resection anastomosis of the affected bowel segment. Results: The mean age was 28.4 years. Female: male ratio was 3:2. Abdominal pain was the most common presenting complaint with or without intestinal obstruction manifestations. Palpable abdominal mass was found in 3 patients (60%). Intussusception was proved pre-operatively in all the cases by abdominal ultrasound and CT scan. The intussusception was found in the jejunum in 3 patients, ileum in 1 patient, & in 1 patient, there was double intussusception (one jejunal & one ileo-cecal). Histopathological examination revealed the presence of typical Peutz-Jeghers hamartomatous polyp. No morbidity or mortality was reported at a mean follow-up period of 32 months. Conclusion: Family history, physical examination, abdominal ultrasound and CT scan were important in the diagnosis of acute intussusception caused by PJS. Surgical management of PJS associated intussusception is the recommended treatment to relieve patient’s symptoms and to avoid missing underlying malignancy. Patient
