Characterization of a Watermelon mosaic virus Isolate Inducing a Severe Disease in Watermelon in Saudi Arabia

In one of the field visits to cucurbits-growing areas in vicinity of Riyadh city during 2013-2015,severe virus disease-like symptoms were observed on watermelon in Al-Ammariyah *** inoculation of the different plant species used in the host range study,from the collected symptomatic watermelon samples,produced mosaic symptoms on Citrullus lanatus,Cucumis sativus,Cucurbita pepo,***,*** *** and Nicotiana benthamiana,but chlorotic local lesions on Chenopodium *** symptoms were observed on the rest of the other inoculated plant *** virus was transmitted by Aphis gossypii and *** in a non-persistent *** electron microscopic examination of watermelon samples using the leaf dip method revealed only microscopic filamentous shaped virus particles measuring 750 nm in length and 12 nm in diameter in *** revealed positive results only to Watermelon mosaic virus(WMV)and negative to Zucchini yellow mosaic virus(ZYMV),Papaya ringspot virus(PRSV),Cucumber mosaic virus(CMV)and Squash mosaic virus(SqMV).Specific bands of approximately 825 bp were formed on agarose gel following electrophoresis of the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)products of each of the naturally infected ***,and artificially infected ***,***,***,and *** homology tree that was constructed from multiple sequence alignments of the detected Saudi Arabian isolate of WMV(WMV-SA)with 18 other isolates of WMV from nine different countries indicated close relationships between *** isolates from Spain and two other isolates from Iran were more closely related to the WMV-SA whereas the isolate from Poland was the least.

Protective role of Juniperus phoenicea and Cupressus sempervirens against CCl_4

AIM: To investigate the role of Cupressus sempervirens (C. sempervirens) and Juniperus phoenicea (J. phoe-nicea) extracts as therapeutic effect against CCl4 with biochemical, histopathological evaluations. METHODS: A single intraperitoneal dose of 10% CCl4 in olive oil (1 mL/kg body weight) was administered to a group of female Wister rats, sacrificed after 24 h (as the injury group). The other groups were given CCl4 as de-scribed above and divided as follows: two groups of ten rats each were orally administered either J. phoenicea extract or C. sempervirens extract three times per week for six weeks and a further group administered CCl4 was left for six weeks to allow self-recovery. At the end of experiment, the rats from all groups were sacrificed for sampling and for biochemical and histological analysis. RESULTS: Remarkable disturbances were observed in the levels of all tested parameters. On the other hand,rats injected with the toxic agent and left for one and a half month to self recover showed moderate improve-ments in the studied parameters while, treatment with both medicinal herbal extracts ameliorated the levels of the disturbed biochemical parameters. The group treated with J. phoenicea extract showed a remarkable improvement in comparison to the CCl4 treated group. The C. sempervirens group revealing an even more re-markable effect showing histopathological liver& kidney profiles close to those of the control ***: C. sempervirens and J. phoenicea leaf extracts show a remarkable effect in enhancing liver and kidney functions and may thus be of therapeutic potential in treatment hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity.

The First Report on Sero-Prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in Working Horses and Donkeys in the Sudan

A serological survey of Toxoplasma gondii was conducted using LAT (Latex Agglutination Test) on 205 sera collected from working horses and donkeys in Khartoum State, Sudan. The overall sero-prevalence of the investigated equines was 32.7%. Antibodies to T. gondii were found in 38% of 100 horses and 27.6% of 105 donkeys. The titers were 1 2 (4 heads), 1 4 (11 heads), 1 8 (13 heads), 1 16 (17 heads), 1 32 (5 heads), 1 64 (10 donkeys) and 1 128 (7 donkeys). Neither the area nor animal species showed significant differences between the investigated groups. However, age was reported to show significant (P < 0.05) effect on equine toxoplasmosis in the Sudan. This is the first report on equine toxoplasmosis in the Sudan.

Clinico-Pathological Profile of Malignant Abdominal Tumors in Children: Experience of the Pediatric Oncology Unit in Bamako

Introduction: the objective was to describe the epidemiological and histological aspects of malignant abdominal tumors in children. Methodology: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2018. We included all patients aged 0 to 15 years with histologically confirmed abdominal malignancies. Results: We collected 46 files of malignant tumors of the abdomen (35% of pediatric cancers). The majority of patients were under 5 years old (65%). The sex ratio was 1.7. They were generally from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds (67%). The average consultation time was 50 days. The main reasons for consultation were abdominal mass (48%), pain (17%) or distension (9%). The mass was large, hard (89%), immobile (71%) and painful (46%). Malnutrition was found in 80% of patients. The mass was retro-peritoneal in 63% of cases and renal in 54%. It was solid in 94% of cases and heterogeneous in 76% of cases. The assay for tumor markers was not performed. Anemia was present in all patients. Fine needle aspiration was performed in 43%, biopsy in 37% and myelogram in 15% of cases. spinal cord involvement was observed in 28% of Burkitt’s cases. The main cancers diagnosed were nephroblastoma (52%), Burkitt’s lymphoma (26%) and neuroblastoma (13%). Stage 1 and stage 2 were frequent in 20% and 22% of cases, respectively;36% of cases were not staged. The average duration of chemotherapy was 11 weeks. Total resection was performed in 30% of cases. The outcome of the patients was marked by total remission in 65%. Conclusion: Abdominal malignancies are very common in children. The diagnosis of certainty is late in our context.

Single Pulmonary Nodule Management: Experience of a Moroccan Center about 24 Patients

Introduction: The management of single pulmonary nodule remains difficult, since it is of multiple etiologies. The endemicity of tuberculosis and hydatidosis in our context makes the etiological orientation even more difficult. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study, involving 24 patients, all operated on for a single pulmonary nodule in the department of thoracic surgery of CHU Hassan II of Fez over a period of 8 years. Results: There were 15 men and 9 women, with an average age of 51 years. 45.4% of patients had a history of known neoplasia. Discovery was fortuitous in 54% of cases. The radiologic diagnosis based on thoracic computed tomography had objectified an isolated nodule in all the patients with a right localization in 71% of the cases It was a solid pulmonary nodule in 91.5% of cases, and a frosted glass appearance in 8.5%. Bronchial fibroscopy was contributory in one case which was a carcinoid tumor. The approach was a conservative postero-lateral thoracotomy in 22 patients. The gesture was atypical resection in 67%, and lobectomy in 24.5% of cases, in the context of centrilobular nodules. The etiologies were dominated by pulmonary metastases in 29% of cases, pulmonary tuberculosis in 21% of cases. The postoperative course was simple in all patients. Conclusion: The pathological antecedents and the characteristics of the nodule on the imaging are essential elements allowing an etiological orientation. However, the pathological study remains the only method to confirm the diagnosis.

About 2 Cases of Accidental Discovery of Broncholithiasis

Broncholithiasis is the presence of calcified material in the bronchial lumen. Bronchial fibroscopy and thoracic CT are the main paraclinical elements for diagnosis. However, most broncholithiasis is fortuitous discovery intraoperatively. The evolution may be marked by complications in the underlying lung, or fistulization in the mediastinal structures especially the esophagus. Early on, management can be simple monitoring or endoscopic extraction of broncholithiasis. Surgery remains the only option in case of complications. The authors report 2 cases of broncholithiasis, one of which was diagnosed radiologically and the other of incidental discovery during the surgical exploration of a lesion of the right lower lobe.

Surgical Management of Pyothorax: A Series of 172 Cases

Introduction: The pyothorax or thoracic empyema is defined by the presence between the two pleural layers of a purulent liquid, or a non-purulent liquid, but with bacteriological or biochemical characteristics testifying to a microbial invasion. The use of early medical treatment prevents the passage to pleural encystment, whose management remains surgical. Material and Methods: Our study was performed retrospectively, in the department of thoracic surgery of CHU Hassan II of Fez, between 2010 and 2016, involving 172 patients operated for pyothorax. Results: Among the 172 patients included in our study, there were 110 men and 67 women. The average age was 32.11 years old. The clinical picture was dominated by pleural syndrome in 56% of cases, signs of tuberculous impregnation in 44.1% of cases. Preoperative preparation with thoracic drainage, bi-antibiotic therapy and respiratory physiotherapy was performed in 90% of cases. The attack was right in 55.8% of cases and left in 44.1%. A chest CT scan performed in all patients showed pachypleuritis in all cases. The tuberculous pyothorax accounted for 54% of cases, those by intra pleural rupture of a pulmonary hydatid cyst in 10.4%, para-pneumonic origin in 5.2% and post-traumatic in 4.06%. The origin was undetermined in 26.16%. A conservative posterolateral thoracotomy was performed in all our patients. The pulmonary release was done through the extrapleural plane in 94% of cases, and pleuropulmonary decortication performed in all cases. Atypical resection was associated in 4.3% of cases and peri-cytectomy in 13.9% of cases. Operative follow-up was simple in 79.6% of cases. The main postoperative complications were a prolonged aerial leak in 16.7%, atelectasis in 4.5%, a wall infection in 6.5%, a hemothorax refrained in 3.2% of cases. We report the structural, optical and electrical properties of Graphene-Vanadium oxide nanoparticles (rGO/VO-NPs) nanocomposites prepared via a hydrothermal method on glass substrates. The samples have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectra (Uv-Vis) (absorbance/reflectance) and electrical conductivity. Our results are revealing a remarkable effect on the morphology and structure of vanadium oxide nanoparticles. Hence, the graphene layers improved their electrical conductivity and highly influenced their optical properties. Therefore, the obtained results may lead to better performance for a large field of applications.

Preparation and Characterization of Nanosized Al-MCM-41 Using Different Silica Sources

Silica sources influence different aspects of Al-MCM-41 crystallization and lead to change in the properties of the final product. The crystallinity of nanosized Al-MCM-41 zeolites prepared from precursors mixtures containing different silica sources, e. g. tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), colloidal silica (CS), silicic acid (SA) and fumed silica (FS) have been studied. The produced samples are investigated using XRD, SEM, FT-IR, pyridine adsorption and N2 physisorption. XRD results show that the products obtained from different silica sources are in Al-MCM-41 phase. SEM results show that silica sources influence the produced Al-MCM-41 shape. Using silicic acid leads to formation of spherical crystals, TEOS gives cubical crystals, colloidal silica forms spherical crystals with smaller aggregated, and fumed silica gives rounded crystals. N2 physisorption results show that silica sources influence pore-diameter and pore-volume of the produced Al-MCM-41; the pore diameter of the produced Al-MCM-41 in case of colloidal silica, TEOS, fumed silica, and silicic acid are 12, 20, 15, and 17? respectively. Also, the pore volume of the produced Al-MCM-41 in case of colloidal silica, TEOS, fumed silica and silicic acid are 0.78, 0.71, 0.76, and 0.8 cm3/gm, respectively.
