Effect of a 26-month floorball training on male elderly's cardiovascular fitness, glucose control, body composition, and functional capacity

Background: Floorball training offers a motivating and socially stimulating team activity for older adults, and 12 weeks of floorball training twice a week among men aged 65—76 years have been shown to have positive effects on a number of physiological parameters important for health. However, the effect of long-term participation in floorball training among male elderly has not been investigated. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of 26-month self-organized regular participation in floorball training on cardiovascular fitness, body composition, blood lipids, glucose control, and physical function among recreationally active men aged 66—78 years.Methods: After completing a 12-week randomized and controlled intervention with floorball and petanque training in the autumn 2014 or spring2015, 15 subjects chose to participate in floorball training(floorball group, FG), whereas 16 subjects resumed their usual lifestyle(control group,CG). FG took part in self-organized floorball training 1.7 sessions of 40 min/week, and CG continued their normal recreationally active lifestyle during a 26-month follow-up period. At baseline and after the follow-up period subjects were tested for cardiovascular fitness, glucose control(resting blood samples), body composition dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DXA-scanning), and functional capacity.Results: In FG, the decline in maximal oxygen uptake(VO_(2max)) during the follow-up period was lower(242 ± 379 mL/min, p = 0.01), blood glycosylated hemoglobin(HbA1c) increased less(—1.6 ± 2.9 mmol/L, p = 0.02), and leg bone mineral density increased more(0.03 ± 0.05 g/cm^2,p = 0.02) than those in CG. The effects on body mass, total lean body mass, fat mass, blood lipids, and physical function were similar in FG and CG.Conclusion: Approximately twice weekly floorball sessions with 40 min/session over 26-month appear to reduce age-related decline in cardiovascular fitness and glucose control and improve leg bone mineral density, suggesting that long-term participation in floo

Removal of chromophoric dissolved organic matter under combined photochemical and microbial degradation as a response to different irradiation intensities

Throughout the freshwater continuum, Dissolved Organic Carbon(DOC) and the colored fraction, Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Material(CDOM), are continuously being added,removed, and transformed, resulting in changes in the chromophoricity and lability of organic matter over time. We examined, experimentally, the effect of increasing irradiationintensities on the combined photochemical and microbial degradation of CDOM and DOC.This was done by using a simulated mixed water column: aged water from a humic lake was exposed to four irradiation-intensities – representing winter, early and late spring, and summer conditions(0.10, 0.16, 0.36, and 0.58 W/m^(2)) – and compared with dark controls over 37days. We found a linear relationship between CDOM degradation and irradiation-intensities up to 0.36 W/m^(2);the degradation rate saturated at higher intensities, both at specific wavelengths and for broader intervals. After 37 days at high irradiation-intensity, CDOM absorption of irradiation at 340 nm had been reduced by 41%;48% of DOC had been removed and DOC degradation continued to increase. Aromaticity(SUVA254) declined significantly over 37 days at the two lowest but not at the two highest UV-intensities;levels in unexposed control water remained constant. Direct observations of the humic lake showed that CDOM absorption of irradiation(340 nm) declined by 27% from winter to summer. A model based on hydrological CDOM input and CDOM degradation calculated from field measurements of UV-radiation and experimental CDOM degradation with UV-exposure from sunlight accurately predicted the annual course as observed in the lake. With no external CDOM input,92% of the CDOM could be degraded in a year. The results support the notion that combined photochemical and microbial CDOM degradation can be remarkably higher in lakes than previously thought and that humic lakes retain their color due to light absorption by ongoing CDOM input.

Battery impedance spectrum prediction from partial charging voltage curve by machine learning

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) is an effective technique for Lithium-ion battery state of health diagnosis, and the impedance spectrum prediction by battery charging curve is expected to enable battery impedance testing during vehicle operation. However, the mechanistic relationship between charging curves and impedance spectrum remains unclear, which hinders the development as well as optimization of EIS-based prediction techniques. In this paper, we predicted the impedance spectrum by the battery charging voltage curve and optimized the input based on electrochemical mechanistic analysis and machine learning. The internal electrochemical relationships between the charging curve,incremental capacity curve, and the impedance spectrum are explored, which improves the physical interpretability for this prediction and helps define the proper partial voltage range for the input for machine learning models. Different machine learning algorithms have been adopted for the verification of the proposed framework based on the sequence-to-sequence predictions. In addition, the predictions with different partial voltage ranges, at different state of charge, and with different training data ratio are evaluated to prove the proposed method have high generalization and robustness. The experimental results show that the proper partial voltage range has high accuracy and converges to the findings of the electrochemical analysis. The predicted errors for impedance spectrum are less than 1.9 mΩ with the proper partial voltage range selected by the corelative analysis of the electrochemical reactions inside the batteries. Even with the voltage range reduced to 3.65–3.75 V, the predictions are still reliable with most RMSEs less than 4 mO.

Effects of 3 months of full-court and half-court street basketball training on health profile in untrained men

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to investigate whether street basketball organized as 3 v 3 on either a half court(HC) with 1 basket or a full court(FC) with 2 baskets could improve fitness and health profiles of untrained men after 3 months of supervised training.Methods: Thirty-five untrained men(aged 20—42 years) completed the pre-and post-intervention testing(FC: n = 13, HC: n = 12, CO(control):n = 10). The training attendance was 2.0 ± 0.4 and 1.9 ± 0.3 times per week in FC and HC, respectively. Mean heart rate(HR) was 83.8 ± 6.0 percent of maximal heart rate(%HR_(max)) and 84.5 ± 2.9 %HR_(max) in FC and HC, respectively.Results: The 3 months of street basketball training on an FC with 2 baskets increased maximal oxygen uptake(2.4 mL/min/kg(95% confidence interval(CI): 1.0—3.9)), time to exhaustion(47 s(95%CI: 26—67)), lean body mass(0.8 kg(95%CI: 0.1—1.5)), and bone mineral density(0.021 g/cm^2(95%CI: 0.011—0.031)), whereas mean arterial pressure(—5.6 mm Hg(95%CI: —7.5 to 3.7)), body fat percentage(—1.6%,(95%CI: —2.5 to —0.7)), heart rate(—18 bpm(95%CI: —24 to —12)), and blood lactate(median: —1.4 mmol/L(interquartile range: —1.5 to —0.6)) during submaximal running were lowered. The changes were less pronounced after the training period when playing on an HC with 1 basket, but increases in maximal oxygen uptake(1.6 mL/min/kg(95%CI: —0.1 to 3.3)), time to exhaustion(28 s(95%CI: 9—47)), lean body mass(1.3 kg(95%CI: 0.3—2.4)), and lower body fat percentage(—0.9%(95%CI: —1.9 to —0.1)) were observed in this group.Conclusion: Three months of 3 v 3 street basketball training improved fitness and led to broad-spectrum improvements in variables related to overall health profile, with the most marked effects observed when playing on an FC with 2 baskets.

Investigation of multi-step fast charging protocol and aging mechanism for commercial NMC/graphite lithium-ion batteries

Fast charging is considered a promising protocol for raising the charging efficiency of electric vehicles.However,high currents applied to Lithium-ion(Li-ion)batteries inevitably accelerate the degradation and shorten their lifetime.This work designs a multi-step fast-charging method to extend the lifetime of LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2(NMC)/graphite Li-ion batteries based on the studies of half cells and investigates the aging mechanisms for different charging methods.The degradation has been studied from both full cell behaviour and materials perspectives through a combination of non-destructive diagnostic methods and post-mortem analysis.In the proposed multi-step charging protocol,the state-of-charge(SOC)profile is subdivided into five ranges,and the charging current is set differently for different SOC ranges.One of the designed multi-step fast charging protocols is shown to allow for a 200 full equivalent cycles longer lifetime as compared to the standard charging method,while the charging time is reduced by 20%.From the incremental capacity analysis and electrical impedance spectroscopy,the loss of active materials and lithium inventory on the electrodes,as well as an increase in internal resistance for the designed multistep constant-current-constant-voltage(MCCCV)protocol have been found to be significantly lower than for the standard charging method.Post-mortem analysis shows that cells aged by the designed MCCCV fast charging protocol exhibit less graphite exfoliation and crystallization damage,as well as a reduced solid electrolyte interphase(SEI)layer growth on the anode,leading to a lower Rseiresistance and extended lifetime.

Understanding the mechanism of capacity increase during early cycling of commercial NMC/graphite lithium-ion batteries

A capacity increase is often observed in the early stage of Li-ion battery cycling.This study explores the phenomena involved in the capacity increase from the full cell,electrodes,and materials perspective through a combination of non-destructive diagnostic methods in a full cell and post-mortem analysis in a coin cell.The results show an increase of 1%initial capacity for the battery aged at 100%depth of discharge(DOD)and 45℃.Furthermore,large DODs or high temperatures accelerate the capacity increase.From the incremental capacity and differential voltage(IC-DV)analysis,we concluded that the increased capacity in a full cell originates from the graphite anode.Furthermore,graphite/Li coin cells show an increased capacity for larger DODs and a decreased capacity for lower DODs,thus in agreement with the full cell results.Post-mortem analysis results show that a larger DOD enlarges the graphite dspace and separates the graphite layer structure,facilitating the Li+diffusion,hence increasing the battery capacity.

Lattice distortion releasing local surface strain on high-entropy alloys

High-entropy alloys(HEAs)have the potential to be a paradigm-shift for rational catalyst discovery but this new type of alloy requires a completely new approach to predict the surface reactivity.In addition to the ligand effect perturbing the surface–adsorbate bond,the random configuration of elements in the surface will also induce local strain effects due to the varying radii of neighboring atoms.Accurate modelling of HEA surface reactivity requires an estimate of this effect:To what degree is the adsorption of intermediates on these lattice distorted atomic environments affected by local strain?In this study,more than 3,500 density functional theory(DFT)calculated adsorption energies of*OH and*O adsorbed on the HEAs IrPdPtRhRu and AgAuCuPdPt are statistically analyzed with respect to the lattice constants of the alloys and the surfaces of each individual binding site.It is found that the inherent distortion of the lattice structure in HEAs releases the local strain effect on the adsorption energy as the atomic environment surrounding the binding atom(s)settles into a relaxed structure.This is even observed to be true for clusters of atoms of which the sizes deviate significantly from the atomic environment in which they are embedded.This elucidates an important aspect of binding site interaction with the neighboring atoms and thus constitutes a step towards a more accurate theoretical model of estimating the reactivity of HEA surfaces.
