Significance of including lid thickness and particle shape factor in numerical modeling for prediction of particle trap efficiency of invert trap

Sediment accumulation on the bed of open sewers and drains reduces hydraulic efficiency and can cause localized *** invert traps installed underneath the bed of open sewers and drains can eliminate sediment build-up by catching sediment *** three-dimensional(3D)computational studies have examined the particle trapping performance of invert traps of different shapes and depths under varied sediment and flow conditions,considering particles as *** two-dimensional and 3D numerical modeling,researchers assumed the lid geometry to be a thin line and a plane,*** this 3D numerical study,the particle trapping efficiency of a slotted irregular hexagonal invert trap fitted at the flume bottom was examined by incorporating the particle shape factor of non-spherical sewage solid particles and the thicknesses of upstream and downstream lids over the trap in the discrete phase model of the ANSYS Fluent 2020 R1 *** volume of fluid(VOF)and the realizable k-turbulence models were used to predict the velocity *** two-dimensional particle image velocimetry(PIV)was used to measure the velocity field inside the invert *** results showed that the thicknesses of upstream and downstream lids affected the velocity field and turbulent kinetic energy at all flow *** joint impact of the particle shape factor and lid thickness on the trap efficiency was *** both the lid thickness and particle shape factor were considered in the numerical modeling,trap efficiencies were underestimated,with relative errors of-8.66%to-0.65%in comparison to the experimental values of Mohsin and Kaushal(2017).They were also lower than the values predicted by Mohsin and Kaushal(2017),which showed an overall overestimation with errors of-2.3%to 17.4%.

Objective:To describe the clinical features,proportion of lipid-laden alveolar macrophages in bronchoalveolar lavage(BAL),and short-term and 6-month to 12-month outcomes of patients with Electronic cigarette/Vaping product use-Associated Lung Injury(EVALI).Methods:Retrospective review of clinical characteristics,radiographs,and BAL samples for all patients with a history of vaping who presented with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure to the University Hospital in San Antonio,Texas from 9/2019 to 6/2020 was ***:We report 16 cases(15 men;median age,30 years[range 19-75])of EVALI with a history of vaping Tetrahydrocannabinol(THC),nicotine,or *** most common presenting symptoms were tachycardia,dyspnea,cough,and *** patients required supplemental oxygen,including two who required noninvasive positive pressure ventilation,and five who required mechanical *** 16 patients had bilateral ground-glass opacities(GGO)with peripheral sparing on chest computerized tomography(CT).Cultures were negative,except for one patient who tested positive for ***-19 PCR was done in one individual which was *** demonstrated lipid-laden macrophages on Oil-Red-O stain on fresh(i.e.,without fixative)BAL in the majority of patients(N=12)with a mean lipid-saturation percentage of 78%[range,44%-100%]and the mean Colombo count of 194[range,101-359].Fifteen patients were treated with systemic *** median length of hospital stay was 10 *** discharge,three patients required supplemental *** of those who had follow-up imaging showed resolution of *** patient had a relapse of symptoms and was again treated with systemic corticosteroids and mycophenolate,with resolution of *** patients who were evaluated after discharge denied vaping post-discharge(two patients were not able to be contacted and did not keep follow-up appointments).Conclusions:Successful diagnosis and management of EVALI requires

Numerical simulation of self-similar thermal convection from a spinning cone in anisotropic porous medium

Self-similar steady natural convection thermal boundary layer flow from a rotating vertical cone to anisotropic Darcian porous medium is investigated theoretically and numerically. The transformed non-dimensional two-point boundary value problem is reduced to a system of coupled, highly nonlinear ordinary differential equations, which are solved subject to robust surface and free stream boundary conditions with the MAPLE 17 numerical quadrature software. Validation with earlier non-rotating studies is included, and also further verification of rotating solutions is achieved with a variational finite element method （FEM）. The rotational （spin） parameter emerges as an inverse function of the Grashof number. The influence of this parameter, primary Darey number, secondary Darcy number and Prandtl number on tangential velocity and swirl velocity, temperature and heat transfer rate are studied in detail. It is found that the dimensionless tangential velocity increases whilst the dimensionless swirl velocity and temperature decrease with the swirl Darcy number, tangential Darcy number and the rotational parameters. The model finds applications in chemical engineering filtration processing, liquid coating and spinning cone distillation columns.

Effect of CuO Doping on the Electrical Behavior of ZrO2

Electrical conductivity has been measured at different temperatures for ZrO2 doped with various molar ratios of CuO. The conductivity increases due to migration of vacancies, created by doping. The conductivity was found to increase with increase in temperature till 220℃ and thereafter decrease due to collapse of the fluorite framework. A second rise in conductivity around 500 ℃ was observed due to phase transition of ZrO2. X-ray powder diffraction, DTA and IR studies were carried out for confirming doping effect and phase transition in ZrO2.

Transient analysis of Casson fluid thermo-convection from a vertical cylinder embedded in a porous medium: Entropy generation and thermal energy transfer visualization

Thermal transport in porous media has stimulated substantial interest in engineering sciences due to increasing applications in filtration systems,porous bearings,porous layer insulation,biomechanics,geomechanics *** by such applications,in this article,a numerical study of entropy generation impacts on the heat and momentum transfer in time-dependent laminar incompressible boundary layer flow of a Casson viscoplastic fluid over a uniformly heated vertical cylinder embedded in a porous medium is ***’s law is used to simulate bulk drag effects at low Reynolds number for an isotropic,homogenous porous *** line visualization is also *** mathematical model is derived and normalized using appropriate transformation *** resulting non-linear time-dependent coupled governing equations with associated boundary conditions are solved via an implicit finite difference method which is efficient and unconditionally *** outcomes show that entropy generation and Bejan number are both elevated with increasing values of Darcy number,Casson fluid parameter,group parameter and Grashof *** analyze the heat transfer process in a two-dimensional domain,plotting heat lines provides an excellent approach in addition to streamlines and *** is remarked that as the Darcy number increases,the deviations of heat lines from the hot wall are reduced.

Role of PTPN2/22 polymorphisms in pathophysiology of Crohn's disease

AIM To establish the relationship of protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor type 2 and 22(PTPN2/22) polymorphisms and mycobacterial infections in Crohn's disease(CD). METHODS All 133 subjects' blood samples were genotyped for nine single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) in PTPN2/22 using TaqMan^(?) genotyping, while the effect of the SNPs on PTPN2/22 and IFN-γ gene expression was determined using RT-PCR. Detection of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis(MAP) IS900 gene was done by nPCR after DNA extraction from the isolated leukocytes of each subjects' blood samples. T-cells isolated from the patient samples were tested for response to phytohematoagglutonin(PHA) mitogen or mycobacterial antigens by Brd U proliferation assays for T-cell activity. RESULTS Out of the nine SNPs examined, subjects with either heterozygous(TC)/minor(CC) alleles in PTPN2:rs478582 occurred in 83% of CD subjects compared to 61% healthy controls(P-values < 0.05; OR = 3.03). Subjects with either heterozygous(GA)/minor(AA) alleles in PTPN22:rs2476601 occurred in 16% of CD compared to 6% healthy controls(OR = 2.7). Gene expression in PTPN2/22 in CD subjects was significantly decreased by 2 folds compared to healthy controls(P-values < 0.05). IFN-γ expression levels were found to be significantly increased by approxiately 2 folds in subjects when either heterozygous or minor alleles in PTPN2:rs478582 and/or PTPN22:rs2476601 were found(P-values < 0.05). MAP DNA was detected in 61% of CD compared to only 8% of healthy controls(P-values < 0.05, OR = 17.52), where subjects with either heterozygous or minor alleles in PTPN2:rs478582 and/or PTPN22:rs2476601 had more MAPbacteremia presence than subjects without SNPs did. T h e average T-cell proliferation in CD treated with PHA or mycobacteria antigens was, respectively, 1.3 folds and 1.5 folds higher than healthy controls without any significant SNP. DTM Simulation of Peristaltic Viscoelastic Biofluid Flow in Asymmetric Porous Media： A Digestive Transport Model

A biofluid dynamics mathematical model is developed to study peristaltic flow of non-Newtonian physiological liquid in a two-dimensional asymmetric channel containing porous media as a simulation of obstructed digestive （intestinal） transport. The fractional Oldroyd-B viscoelastic rheological model is utilized. The biophysical flow regime is constructed as a wave-like motion and porous medium is simulated with a modified Darcy-Brinkman model. This model is aimed at describing the diges- tive transport in intestinal tract containing deposits which induce impedance. A low Reynolds number approximation is em- ployed to eliminate inertial effects and the wavelength to diameter ratio is assumed to be large. The differential transform method （DTM）, a semi-computational technique is employed to obtain approximate analytical solutions to the boundary value problem. The influences of fractional （rheological material） parameters, relaxation time, retardation time, amplitude of the wave, and permeability parameter on peristaltic flow characteristics such as volumetric flow rate, pressure difference and wall friction force are computed. The present model is relevant to flow in diseased intestines.
