Enhanced Public Health Surveillance for the Sixth Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival Conducted by the Okinawa Prefectural Government, Japan

Objective: The Okinawa prefectural government conducted enhanced surveillance for the Sixth Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival, with participation of more than 5300 visitors from abroad, many of whom were Okinawan or of Okinawan descent, for early detection of Zika virus disease and other potential public health threat outbreaks. Method: Enhanced surveillance conducted from 12 October through 13 November involved four surveillance systems, (Nursery) School Absenteeism Surveillance system ((N)SASSy), Prescription Surveillance (PS), and Official Syndromic Surveillance (OSS), each of them operates routinely, in addition to case-based and sentinel surveillance under the Infectious Diseases Control Law as Official National Surveillance of Infectious Diseases (ONSID). This enhanced surveillance was conducted for analysis and evaluation, with intensive information sharing among concerned parties. Result: We performed the enhanced surveillance for 33 days from 12 October through 13 November. Information from enhanced surveillance was analyzed and evaluated, and eventually summarized as a daily report. There has been one rubella case at an elementary school in Okinawa City on 20 October and a measles case at an elementary school in Uruma City on 2 November. Those two cases were registered into (N)SASSy on a timely basis. The public health center investigated them quickly, and the measles case was denied later because symptoms did not satisfy with case definition. Discussion: We regard enhanced surveillance as useful to confirm events that might demand a public health response. Moreover, the related including public health centers or medical institutions confirmed the situation as valuable for the administrative structure. However, because almost all (nursery) schools or pharmacies are closed during successive holidays, outbreaks that occur on such days cannot be recognized on a timely basis. Remote-Plasma-Assisted Deposition of Pentacene Layer Using Atomic-Hydrogen

Pentacene thin layers were deposited on Si with the native oxide at 80°C by remote-plasma-assisted deposition (RPAD) using hydrogen-plasma cell to supply atomic hydrogen radicals. The deposition rate was increased by RPAD comparing to that by non-excited hydrogen gas supply whereas thermal evaporation rate of pentacene from crucible was same in the both process. DFM and XRD studies showed the grain laterally grew in the thin film phase with the size above 10 μm by RPAD. First-principles molecular orbital calculations suggested pentacene is evaporated from crucible as the trimer or larger cluster but atomic hydrogen penetrated into the cluster enhances cracking of pentacene clusters to the monomer.

Species-dependent effects of the phenolic herbicide ioxynil with potential thyroid hormone disrupting activity: modulation of its cellular uptake and activity by interaction with serum thyroid hormone-binding proteins

Ioxynil, a phenolic herbicide, is known to exert thyroid hormone （TH） disrupting activity by interfering with TH-binding to plasma proteins and a step of the cellular TH-signaling pathway in restricted animal species. However, comparative studies are still lacking on the TH disruption. We investigated the interaction of [125I] ioxynil with serum proteins from rainbow trout, bullfrog, chicken, pig, rat, and mouse, using native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Candidate ioxynil-binding proteins, which included lipoproteins, albumin and transthyretin （TTR）, differed among the vertebrates tested. Rainbow trout and bullfrog tadpole serum had the lowest binding activity for ioxynil, whereas the eutherian serum had the highest binding activity. The cellular uptake of, and response to, ioxynil were suppressed by rat serum greater than by tadpole serum. The cellular uptake of [125I]ioxynil competed strongly with phenols with a single ring, but not with THs. Our results suggested that ioxynil interferes with TH homeostasis in plasma and with a step of cellular TH-signaling pathway other than TH-uptake system, in a species-specific manner.

X-ray CT scanners,due to the transmissive nature of X-rays,have enabled the non-destructive evaluation of industrial products,even inside their *** light of its effectiveness,this study introduces a new approach to accelerate the inspection of many mechanical parts with the same shape in a *** input to this problem is a volumetric image(i.e.,CT volume)of many parts obtained by a single CT *** need to segment the parts in the volume to inspect each of them;however,random postures and dense contacts of the parts prohibit part segmentation using traditional template *** address this problem,we convert both the scanned volumetric images of the template and the binned parts to simpler graph structures and solve a subgraph matching problem to segment the *** perform a distance transform to convert the CT volume into a distance ***,we construct a graph based on Morse theory,in which graph nodes are located at the extremum points of the distance *** experimental evaluation demonstrates that our fully automatic approach can detect target parts appropriately,even for a heap of 50 ***,the overall computation can be performed in approximately 30 min for a large CT volume of approximately 2000×2000×1000 voxels.

Changes in serum thyroid hormone levels and thyroid gland activity of artificially maturing female Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica)

In order to evaluate the involvement of the thyroid gland in reproduction, thyroid functioning was described in female cultivated Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) in progressive stages of sexual maturation induced by chum salmon pituitary homogenate (SPH) treatment. Serum thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) were also measured in each stage. Thyroid gland activity (epithelial cell height) was high before SPH injection (previtellogenic stage), further increasing at the early vitellogenic stage, thereafter decreasing to late vitellogenic and migratory nucleus stages. The profiles of both T3 and T4 changed during vitellogenesis, being high during previtellogenic and early vitellogenic stages, and subsequently declining, thus mimicking thyroid gland activity. These results suggest that the thyroid has relation with eel ovarian development during artificial maturation.

Non-genetic contributions of the sperm nucleus to embryonic development

Recent data from several laboratories have provided evidence that the newly fertilized oocyte inherits epigenetic signals from the sperm chromatin that are required for proper embryonic development. For the purposes of this review, the term epigenetic is used to describe all types of molecular information that are transmitted from the sperm cell to the embryo. There are at least six different forms of epigenetic information that have already been established as being required for proper embryogenesis in mammals or for which there is evidence that it may do so. These are （i） DNA methylation; （ii） sperm-specific histones, （iii） other chromatin-associated proteins; （iv） the perinuclear theca proteins; （v） sperm-born RNAs and, the focus of this review; and （vi） the DNA loop domain organization by the sperm nuclear matrix. These epigenetic signals should he considered when designing protocols for the manipulation and cryopreservation of spermatozoa for assisted reproductive technology as necessary components for effective fertilization and subsequent embryo development.

Study of Optical Fibers Strain-Temperature Sensitivities Using Hybrid Brillouin-Rayleigh System

In this paper, the most recent progress as well as challenges of distributed optical fiber sensing （DOFS） in industrial applications is discussed. Compared to the vast market of sensors used to measure strain or temperature, the success of distributed optical fiber sensing （DOFS） at the industrial level is very limited, at best. One of the reasons for this lack of the wider acceptance is the mismatch between the commercially available systems and actual industrial requirements, especially for the spatial resolution and precision. These requirements are organized and clarified in the paper. It also describes the hybrid Brillouin-Rayleigh system, which exhibits capabilities surpassing those of strain gauges. The principles of the system are illustrated considering the fiber calibration methodology. Formulas required for determining strain, temperature, and hydro-pressure are derived and discussed. Finally, the examples of applications are presented.
