AIM： To compare efficacy of proton pump inhibitors （PPIs） with H2-receptor antagonists （H2RA$） plus pro- kinetics （Proks） for dysmotility-like symptoms in func- tional dyspepsia （FD）. METHODS： Subjects were randomized to receive openlabel treatment with either rabeprazole 10 mg od （n = 57） or famotidine 10 mg bid plus mosapride 5 mg tid （n = 57） for 4 wk. The primary efficacy endpoint was change （%） from baseline in total dysmotility-like dyspepsia symptom score. The secondary efficacy endpoint was patient satisfaction with treatment. RESULTS： The improvement in dysmotility-like dyspep- sia symptom score on day 28 was significantly greater in the rabeprazole group （22.5% ± 29.2% of baseline） than the famotidine ＋ mosapride group （53.2%±58.6% of baseline, P 〈 0.0001）. The superior benefit of rabeprazole treatment after 28 d was consistent regardless of Helicobacter pylori status. Significantly more subjects in the rabeprazole group were satisfied or very satisfied with treatment on day 28 than in the famotidine ＋ mosapride group （87.7% vs 59.6%, P = 0.0012）. Rabeprazole therapy was the only significant predictor of treatment response （P 〈 0.0001）, defined as a total symptom score improvement ≥ 50%. CONCLUSION： PPI monotherapy improves dysmotil- ity-like symptoms significantly better than H2RAs plus Proks, and should be the treatment of first choice for Japanese FD.

Role of Salix reinii patches in spatio-temporal patterns of cohabitants on a Japanese volcano

Shrub patches often support the colonizers particularly under stressful and/or disturbed *** intensities of stresses and disturbances on mountains are often related to an elevation gradient and are decreased by shrub patches(canopy and litter).We aim to clarify these relationships by using shrub patches at different elevations on a *** monitored all shoots in plots established inside and outside of patches of Salix reinii(Salicaceae)and their related environments,such as temperature,light,moisture and chemistry,at three elevations on Mount Koma(1131 m a.s.l.),northern Japan,from early spring in 2005 to summer in *** patch structures were evaluated by area,branch density and litter *** structures of shrub patches did not differ among the *** patches increased the diversity of rare species,by an overall increase in plant species *** moisture,nitrogen and phosphate contents in the patches were higher than outside of *** effects of shrub patches on the cohabitants were overall positive,although the effects were negative on seedling abundance,shoot survival and *** results suggest that the growth patterns of shrub patches determine the plant community structures and facilitate plant diversity.

The baker's yeast Saccharomyces(S.)cerevisiae is a single-celled eukaryotic model organism widely used in research on life *** a unicellular organism,*** has some evident limitations in application to ***,yeast prions are extensively studied and they are known to share some hallmarks with mammalian prion protein or other amyloidogenic proteins found in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's,Parkinson's,or Huntington's ***,the yeast *** has been widely used for basic research on aggregation properties of proteins in cellulo and on their ***,a yeast-based study revealed that some regions of mammalian prion protein and amyloidβ1–42 are capable of induction and propagation of yeast *** is one of the examples showing that evolutionarily distant organisms share common mechanisms underlying the structural conversion of prion proteins making yeast cells a useful system for studying mammalian prion *** has also been used to design novel screening systems for anti-prion compounds from chemical *** assays are cheap in maintenance and safe for the researcher,making them a very good choice to perform preliminary screening before further characterization in systems engaging mammalian cells infected with *** this review,not only classical red/white colony assay but also yeast-based screening assays developed during last year are *** analysis and research carried out using yeast prions force us to expect that prions are widely present in ***,the last few years brought us several examples indicating that the mammalian prion protein is no more peculiar protein–it seems that a better understanding of prion proteins nature-wide may aid us with the treatment of prion diseases and other amyloid-related medical conditions.

Estimation of culm volume reduction factors in five bamboo species(Phyllostachys spp.)

The hollow cylindrical culm is one of the most remarkable morphological characters of most bamboo *** relation to its hollow structure,there are two different attributes of the culm volume in bamboo:the apparent culm volume(va:the total culm volume including the hollow portion)and the woody culm volume(vw:the volume of the woody walls of the culm).The ratio of vw to va is defined as the reduction factor for culm volume(fv).The quantity fv is useful to quantify the biomass resources of bamboo culms as well as to evaluate the carbon stock of bamboo ***,the direct measurement of fv requires destructive sampling,which consumes time and ***,an alternative method for obtaining fv is *** this study,we examined fv in five species of the genus Phyllostachys and proposed alternative methods to estimate *** data showed that fv varied by species,some of which exhibited a dependency of fv on culm *** findings indicate that the intraspecific and interspecific variation in fv should be considered carefully when converting va into vw by *** on our results,we propose here six approaches for predicting fv and we discuss their advantages and *** results are intended to facilitate evaluation of the carbon sequestration capacity of bamboo forests and the commercial utilization of bamboo culms.

Effects of silicon addition on optical properties of mould flux with iron oxide and estimation of apparent thermal conductivity of flux

Moxibustion Promotes Formation of Granulation in Wound Healing Process through Induction of Transforming Growth Factor-β in Rats

Magnetic properties of soft layer/FePt-MgO exchange coupled composite perpendicular recording media

The magnetic properties of exchange coupled composite （ECC） media that are composed of perpendicular magnetic recording media FePt MgO and two kinds of soft layers have been studied by using an x-ray diffractometer, a polar Kerr magneto-optical system （PMOKE） and a vibrating sample magnetometer （VSM）. The results show that ECC media can reduce the coercivities of perpendicular magnetic recording media FePt-MgO. The ECC media with granular-type soft layers have weaker exchange couplings between magnetic grains and the magnetization process, for ECC media of this kind mainly follow the Stoner Wohlfarth model.

Vernalization, the acquisition of competence to flower after extended cold treatment, has puzzled researchers throughout the last century. Great progress in understanding the molecular mechanisms of vernalization in Arabidopsis has been made in the course of the last 20 years, placing the flowering repressor- encoding gene FLOWERING LOCUS C （FLC） in the limelight （Bouch6 et al., 2017）. In vernalization-dependent accessions, FRIGIDA （FRI） ensures strong expression of FLC that delays flowering, and extended exposure to low temperatures such as during winter leads to stable repression of FLC, which in turn clears the way for induction of flowering.

A Straight-bladed Vertical Axis Wind Turbine with a Directed Guide Vane Row-Effect of Guide Vane Geometry on the Performance-

The objective of this study is to show the effect of guide vane geometry on the performance. In order to overcome the disadvantages of vertical axis wind turbine, a straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine （S-VAWT） with a directed guide vane row has been proposed and tested by the authors. According to previous studies, it was clarified that the performance of the turbine can be improved by means of the directed guide vane row. However, the guide vane geometry of S-VAWT has not been optimized so far. In order to clarify the effect of guide vanegeometry, the effects of setting angle and gap between rotor blade and guide vane on power coefticlent and start- ing characteristic were investigated in the experiments. The experimental study of the proposed wind turbine was carried out by a wind tunnel. The wind tunnel with a diameter of 1.8m is open jet type. The wind velocity is 8 m/s in the experiments. The rotor has three straight blades with a profile of NACA0018 and a chord length of 100 mm, a diameter of 0.6 m and a blade height of 0.7 m. The guide vane row consists of 3 arc plates.

Periodical shedding of cloud cavitation from a single hydrofoil in high-speed cryogenic channel flow

In order to explain criteria for periodical shedding of the cloud cavitation, flow patterns of cavitation around a piano-convex hydrofoil were observed using a cryogenic cavitation tunnel of a blowdown type. Two hydrofoils of similarity of 20 and 60 mm in chord length with two test sections of 20 and 60 mm in width were prepared. Working fluids were water at ambient temperature, hot water and liquid nitrogen. The parameter range was varied between 0.3 and 1.4 for cavitation number, 9 and 17 m/sec for inlet flow velocity, and -8° and 8° for the flow incidence angle, respectively. At incidence angle 8°, that is, the convex surface being suction surface, periodical shedding of the whole cloud cavitation was observed on the convex surface under the specific condition with cavitation number and inlet flow velocity, respectively, 0.5, 9 m/sec for liquid nitrogen at 192℃ and 1.4, 11 m/sec for water at 88℃, whereas under the supercavitation condition, it was not observable. Periodical shedding of cloud cavitation occurs only in the case that there are both the adverse pressure gradient and the slow flow region on the hydrofoil.
