Analysis on Composition and Antioxidative Properties of Phlorotannins Isolated from Japanese Eisenia and Ecklonia Species

The composition and antioxidative properties of crude phlorotannins isolated from Japanese Eisenia and Ecklonia species including cultured E. kurome were analyzed. As a result of liquid chromatography mass spectrometry analysis, it was suggested that the phlorotannins were composed of compounds containing 3 - 7 phloroglucinol units for Eisenia species and 3 - 8 phloroglucinol units for Ecklonia species. The antioxidant properties of phlorotannins were evaluated using the hydrophilic oxygen radical absorbance capacity (H-ORAC) assay, the measurements of superoxide anion radical scavenging activity (SOSA) with electron spin resonance method, and the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and reducing power assay. It was clarified that the phlorotannins contained H-ORAC values of 8.9 × 103 - 1.0 × 104 μmol-Trolox equivalents (TE)/g, SOSA of 1.5 × 104 - 2.9 × 104 superoxide dismutase units/g, DPPH radical scavenging activity of 4.7 × 103 - 5.5 × 103 μmol-TE/g, and reducing power of 6.5 × 102 - 7.0 × 102 mg-ascorbic acid equivalents/g, and had excellent antioxidative properties.

The antioxidative properties of phlorotannins isolated from the brown alga Eisenia bicyclis were measured using the H-ORAC (Hydrophilic Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) method. The ORAC values of phloroglucinol and it’s oligomers: eckol, fucofuroeckol A, phlorofucofuroeckol A, dieckol, 8,8’-bieckol, were 2.57 ± 0.14, 4.97 ± 0.36, 9.82 ± 0.70, 8.97 ± 0.89, 10.22 ± 0.85, 8.62 ± 0.92 μmol Trolox equivalent/μmol, respectively. With the exception of eckol, the ORAC values of tested phlorotannins were higher than those of the well-known antioxidants (epigallocatechin gallate, resveratrol and L-ascorbic acid) used as positive controls. As a result of comparing with known ORAC values, it was found that the dieckol and fucofuroeckol A had stronger antioxidant activity than representative polyphenols (e.g., kaempferol, quercetin, myricetin and chlorogenic acid) derived from terrestrial plants.

Japan has yet to establish a seismic design for road box culverts(RBCs)because past major earthquakes did not damage *** recent years,structures with enlarged sectional dimensions(the purpose of which is to optimize the internal space in RBCs)have become ***,the unknown seismic strength of such large RBCs makes RBC seismic designs increasingly *** seismic design methods have been developed for and applied to rectangular underground structures,e.g.,cut-and-cover tunnels,which are structurally similar to *** these methods are applicable to RBCs,it is uncertain whether they can be applied directly because there are currently no evaluation results from model tests on RBCs,which have unique structural features,e.g.,no haunch at the bottom of the ***,we verify a seismic behavior of an RBC and develop a method for evaluating it in order to establish a seismic design for *** conducted centrifuge model tests subjected to seismic force and a numerical analysis using an elastoplastic finite analysis method,in addition,we validated this analysis by comparing the test and analytical *** test results show RBCs will most likely develop rocking rotation when the ground strain exceeds approximately 0.08%.A comparison of the numerical and experimental results shows that this analysis can estimate the shear deformation behavior with approximately 90%accuracy in square cross-section ***,this analysis has tendency to underestimate the axial forces in each case and to overestimate the bending moments of some members in the case of wide cross-sections.

Can harvest outsourcing services reduce field harvest losses of rice in China?

The purpose of this study is to quantify the rice harvest losses in China and to evaluate the impacts of machinery and harvest outsourcing services on these losses,given the background of high-speed mechanization and outsourcing *** were collected from a national survey conducted in 2016 by the research team in conjunction with the Research Center for the Rural Economy of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China.A non-parametric method was used to test whether combine harvesting and outsourcing services could significantly reduce harvest ***,quantile regression was used to estimate the real effects of machinery and outsourcing services on harvest *** analysis yielded four main study ***,the harvest loss rate of rice in China was 3.65%.Second,mechanical reaping and winnowing caused greater losses than manual methods,while the opposite was true of field ***,combine harvesting increased the ***,the effects of an outsourcing service on losses differed among the different harvesting *** services increased losses in segmented harvesting but they reduced losses in combine harvesting.

BACKGROUND Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease(EGID)is a disorder characterized by infiltration of eosinophils causing mucosal damage and dysfunction of the gastrointestinal *** endoscopic findings of eosinophilic enteritis(EoN),an EGID variant,are nonspecific and occasionally difficult to *** contrast,chronic enteropathy associated with SLCO2A1(CEAS)is a chronic persistent small intestinal disorder characterized by endoscopic findings such as multiple oblique and circular *** SUMMARY We report the case of a 10-year-old boy who had suffered abdominal pain and fatigue for the preceding 6 *** was referred to our institute for investigation of suspected gastrointestinal bleeding because of severe anemia with hypoproteinemia and positive fecal human *** upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopic findings were normal;however,double-balloon small bowel endoscopy showed multiple oblique and circular ulcers with discrete margins and mild constriction of the intestinal lumen in the *** findings were highly consistent with CEAS,but urine prostaglandin metabolites were within normal limits,and no previously reported mutations in the SLCO2A1 gene were *** evaluation demonstrated moderate to severe eosinophilic infiltration localized to the small intestine suggesting a diagnosis of *** remission was maintained with montelukast and a partial elemental diet,but emergent surgery for bowel obstruction due to small intestinal stenosis was performed two years after the initial *** EoN should be considered in the differential diagnosis of CEAS-like small intestinal ulcerative lesions and normal urinary prostaglandin metabolite levels.

Efficacy and safety of over-the-scope clip: Including complications after endoscopic submucosal dissection

AIM: To retrospectively review the results of over-thescope clip (OTSC) use in our hospital and to examine the feasibility of using the OTSC to treat perforations after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). METHODS: We enrolled 23 patients who presented with gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, fistulae and perforations and were treated with OTSCs (Ovesco Endoscopy GmbH, Tuebingen, Germany) between November 2011 and September 2012. Maximum lesion size was defined as lesion diameter. The number of OTSCs to be used per patient was not decided until the lesion was completely closed. We used a twin grasper (Ovesco Endoscopy GmbH, Tuebingen, Germany) as a grasping device for all the patients. A 9 mm OTSC was chosen for use in the esophagus and colon, and a 10 mm device was used for the stomach, duodenum and rectum. The overall success rate and complications were evaluated, with a particular emphasis on patients who had undergone ESD due to adenocarcinoma. In technical successful cases we included not only complete closing by using OTSCs, but also partial closing where complete closure with OTSCs is almost difficult. In overall clinical successful cases we included only complete closing by using only OTSCs perfectly. All the OTSCs were placed by 2 experienced endoscopists. The sites closed after ESD included not only the perforation site but also all defective ulcers ***: A total of 23 patients [mean age 77 years (range 64-98 years)] underwent OTSC placement during the study period. The indications for OTSC placement were GI bleeding (n = 9), perforation (n = 10), fistula (n = 4) and the prevention of post-ESD duodenal artificial ulcer perforation (n = 1). One patient had a perforation caused by a glycerin enema, after which a fistula formed. Lesion closure using the OTSC alone was successful in 19 out of 23 patients, and overall success rate was 82.6%. AIM: To examine the effects of pancreatic rest, stimulation and rest/stimulation on the natural course of recovery after acute pancreatitis. METHODS: Acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis(AP) was induced in male rats by intraductal infusion of 40 μl/100 g body weight of 3% sodium taurocholate. All rats took food ad libitum. At 24 h after induction of AP, rats were divided into four groups: control(AP-C), pancreas rest(AP-R), stimulation(AP-S), and rest/stimulation(AP-R/S). Rats in the AP-C, AP-R and AP-S groups received oral administration of 2 ml/kg body weight saline, cholecystokinin(CCK)-1 receptor antagonist, and endogenous CCK release stimulant, respectively, twice daily for 10 d, while those in the AP-R/S group received twice daily CCK-1 receptor antagonist for the first 5 d followed by twice daily CCK release stimulant for 5 d. Rats without any treatment were used as control group(Control). Biochemical andhistological changes in the pancreas, and secretory function were evaluated on day 12 at 24 h after the last treatment. RESULTS: Feeding ad libitum(AP-C) delayed biochemical, histological and functional recovery from AP. In AP-C rats, bombesin-stimulated pancreatic secretory function and HOMA-β-cell score were significantly lower than those in other groups of rats. In AP-R rats, protein per DNA ratio and pancreatic exocrine secretory function were significantly low compared with those in Control rats. In AP-S and AP-R/S rats, the above parameters recovered to the Control levels. Bombesinstimulated pancreatic exocrine response in AP-R/S rats was higher than in AP-S rats and almost returned to control levels. In the pancreas of AP-C rats, destruction of pancreatic acini, marked infiltration of inflammatory cells, and strong expression of α-smooth muscle actin, tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β were seen. Pancreatic rest reversed these histological alterations, but not atrophy of pancreatic acini and mild infiltration of inflammatory cells. In AP-S and AP-R/S
