The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) symptoms among primary schoolchildren, and to objectively determine the influence of SDB on the intra-oral environment through the analysis of saliva. A questionnaire survey was conducted among approximately 400 children from a primary school in Hiroshima. Parents were asked to complete the questionnaire and provide their contact information if they allowed the collection of saliva samples from their children. Thirty-eight chil- dren agreed to participate in the saliva study. Habit- ual snoring and cessation of breathing during sleep were found in approximately 8% and 1% of children, respectively. The present results showed significant correlations between snoring and mouth breathing. A significant association between excessive daytime sle- epiness (EDS) and learning problems was found. Fur- thermore, among children between the ages of 7 and 12 years, those with EDS and learning problems tended to be older. SDB symptom scores were statisti- cally significant only in relation to EDS. The present study also demonstrated significantly higher levels of salivary IgA and cortisol in children with sleep-re- lated disorders. The present study determined the pre- valence and characteristics of SDB among Japanese primary schoolchildren and their effects on the oral environment. Approximately 8% of primary school- children with habitual snoring might need to be care- fully monitored for SDB symptoms and immune sta- tus to ensure proper psychological and physical deve- lopment.

An?increased?content?of?low?molecular?weight (LMW)- HA?was?found?in?human?gingiva?during?the?initial phase of?periodontitis. A?number?of?functions?have?been?described?for LMW-HA?in?inflammatory?processes.?It?is?also?demonstrated?that?LMWHA?induces?apoptosis?in?chondrocytes?and?tumor?cells,?however, effects of?LMWHA on the apoptosis?of?gingival?fibroblasts?(GFs) remain?unclear. The?purpose?of?this?study?was?to?investigate?the effects?of HA?oligosaccharides?(HAoligo) on?the apoptosis of GFs. Fabrication of Tungsten Carbide Films by Filtered Pulse Arc Deposition with Cemented Tungsten Carbide Cathodes

Tungsten carbide films (W-C films) were fabricated on silicon substrates by using the filtered pulse arc deposition (FPAD) method. Two types of cemented tungsten carbide (WC) were used as cathode, one containing Co and the other Ti, which were used as binders for forming the cathode shape. The films were fabricated by varying the pulse arc current and substrate bias voltage. The discharge, deposition and film properties were investigated under these deposition conditions. The cathode wear amount when using WC-Co (WC cathode containing Co) was found to be smaller than that measured when WC-Ti (WC cathode containing Ti) was used. The W-C film thickness was approximately 30 - 40 nm under all conditions, except when the pulse arc current was 50 A and the film thickness, was approximately 10 nm. Compared to the WC-Ti, the consumption of cathode material is suppressed in the WC-Co, indicating that the efficiency for film preparation of the latter is good. From the X-ray diffraction analysis, the crystalline phase of W-C films fabricated using WC-Co and WC-Ti were observed as W2C and WC1-x, respectively, indicating that different crystalline phases could be fabricated using different cathodes. From the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, the oxidation layer formed by air exposure was observed to exclusively exist on the W-C film surface. Moreover, almost all oxygen in the oxidation layer bonded with tungsten.

＜正＞Ship waves in shallow water are greatly different from those in deep water. In the present paper, the numerical method of ship waves by tanimoto et al. was applied to open sea with a constant water depth and a coast with straight, parallel depth contours in order to investigate characteristics of propagation and transformation of ship waves. The ship length is 82m, the breadth is 14.6m and the draft is 5.88m. The ship sails on a straight course of a constant water depth from 6.5m to 18m. The wave pattern changes by the depth Froude number as pointed out by Havelock. When the ship speed is critical or super-critical, bow waves ahead of the ship are split to several isolated waves as they propagate. Transformations due to shoaling and refraction occur when ship waves propagate on the sloping coast. When the ship sails on the straight course of 15m deep and the speed is critical, the maximum wave height exceeds to 2m at the water depth of 1.5m.

Background: Secondary alveolar bone graft has been widely used for the closure of maxillary bone defects in patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP). However, the log-term stability of grafted bone in detail remains unclear. Purpose: To evaluate the nature of longitudinal changes in the grafted bone from autogenous iliac bone in patients with CLP for more than 2 years after the surgery. Methods and Subjects: The subjects were 124 CLP patients treated with iliac bone graft in Hiroshima University Hospital from 1997 to 2007. The height and location of the bone bridge was evaluated radiographically before and after surgery. Results: 1) Bone graft was performed at a mean age of 12.5 (±4.2) years old. The canines on the cleft side were not erupted at the surgery in 60.0%. All canines erupted except for the congenital missing and impacted ones (11.3%) within 2 years after bone graft;2) The height of the bone bridge was more than 11 mm in 71.8% of all patients 1 month after surgery. In addition, the location of bone bridge in 66.1% of all patients were clinically satisfactory. However, these rates decreased time-dependently owing to bone resorption after the bone graft. Conclusions: In conclusion, it is shown that autogenous bone graft produce a sufficient bone bridge in the jaw cleft area by the long-term evaluation of the changes in height and location of bone bridge, although some amount of time-dependent bone resorption is inevitable.

风化是龙游石窟保护和向游人开放参观时所面临的主要病害和急待解决的问题。在对浙江省龙游石窟砂岩岩矿分析、泥质胶结物中黏土矿物和地表、洞室渗水分析研究的基础上,模拟石窟客观环境条件,对石窟砂岩在盐溶液中反复浸泡,进行加速风化试验。其试验研究方法是,设置NaCl,Na2SO4饱和溶液和蒸馏水作为对比试验的浸泡液,将石窟砂岩试样在浸泡液中进行反复浸泡–干燥循环试验,每次试样干燥后测定其弹性波速。试验研究表明:Na2SO4,NaCl等可溶盐的参与,大大加速砂岩的风化速度;在洞室的渗水中所含SO 42?,C l?等离子的浓度越高,加速砂岩风化速度的作用越明显;SO 24?较C l?加速砂岩风化的作用更大。
