Old astrocyte specifically induced substance （OASIS） is an endoplasmic reticulum （ER） stress transducer specifically expressed in astrocytes and osteoblasts. OASIS regulates the differentiation of neural precursor cells into astrocytes in the central nervous system. This study aimed to elucidate the involvement of ER stress responses stimulated via OASIS in astrogliosis following spinal cord injury. In a mouse model of spinal cord contusion injury, OASIS mRNA and protein expression were evaluated at days 7 and 14. A significant increase in OASIS mRNA on day 7 and an increase in protein on days 7 and 14 was observed in injured spinal cords. Immunostaining on day 7 revealed co-localization of OASIS and astrocytes in the periphery of the injury site. Furthermore, anti-OASIS small interfering RNA （siRNA） was injected at the injury sites on day 5 to elucidate the function of OASIS. Treatment with anti-OASIS siRNA caused a significant decrease in OASIS mRNA on day 7 and protein on days 7 and 14, and was associated with the inhibition of astrogliosis and hindlimb motor function recovery. Results of our study show that OASIS expression synchronizes with astrogliosis and is functionally associated with astrogliosis after spinal cord injury.

Smudge is black granules that scatter on tinplate sheet; it was formed during the process of plating and storing, and seriously affected the function and appearance of tinplate sheet. Reflowing and cathodic dichromate treatment (CDC) are two major phases in which smudge is produced. In this paper, the appearance and component of smudge was analyzed by means of whiteness meter, SEM and EDS quantitatively. Factors of CDC conditions was studied. Results of tests showed that whiteness measurement is convenient to evaluation of the degree of smudge and the effects of CDC on it , quantitatively.

Dry machining has become a key issue to significantly reduce the wastes of used lubricants and cleaning agents and to improve the environmental consciousness for medical and food applications of special tooling. Since the tools and metallic works are in direct contact in dry, severe adhesive wear and oxidation are thought to occur even at the presence of hard protective coatings. Self-lubrication mechanism with use of lubricous oxide films is found to be effective for dry machining. Through the chlorine ion implantation to tools, titanium base oxides are in-situ formed on the tool surface. This oxide deforms elasto-plastically so that both friction coefficient and wear volume are reduced even in the high-speed cutting.

The presence of matrix metalloproteinase-2 （MMP-2） in dentin has been reported, but its distribution and activity level in mature human coronal dentin are not well understood. The purpose of this study was to determine the MMP-2 distribution and relative activity in demineralized dentin. Crowns of twenty eight human molars were sectioned into inner （ID）, middle （MD）, and outer dentin （OD） regions and demineralized. MMP-2 was extracted with 0.33 mol·L-1 EDTA/2 mol·L-1 guanidine-HCl, pH 7.4, and MMP-2 concentration was estimated with enzyme-linked immunoabsorbant assay （ELISA）. Further characterization was accomplished by Western blotting analysis and gelatin zymography. The mean concentrations of MMP-2 per mg dentin protein in the dentin regions were significantly different （P=0.043）： 0.9 ng （ID）, 0.4 ng （MD）, and 2.2 ng （OD）, respectively. The pattern of MMP-2 concentration was OD〉ID〉MD. Western blotting analysis detected -66 and -72 kDa immunopositive proteins corresponding to pro- and mature MMP-2, respectively, in the ID and MD, and a -66 kDa protein in the OD. Gelatinolytic activity consistent with MMP-2 was detected in all regions. Interestingly, the pattern of levels of Western blot immunodetection and gelatinolytic activity was MD〉ID〉OD. The eoneentration of MMP-2 in human coronal dentin was highest in the region of dentin that contains the dentinoenamel junction and least in the middle region of dentin. However, levels of Western blot immunodetection and gelatinolytic activity did not correlate with the estimated regional concentrations of MMP-2, potentially indicating region specific protein interactions.

A novel method combining dual wavelength fluorescent ratiometry with scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) is proposed and developed to measure the concentration and distribution of protons in the vicinity of biological samples. This method involves immersing mitochondria in a pH-sensitive fluorescent dye solution instead of injecting the dye into the surface of the mitochondrial membrane. It uses a dual emission pH-sensitive dye and SNOM with a thermally pulled and metal-coated optical fiber probe to improve the spatial resolution. The time dependence of the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) under acid addition and the response of mitochondria to nutritional supplementation were studied by using this method. Activation of mitochondria and a distance-dependent delay in the FIR response were observed. The results confirmed that mitochondrial activity could be observed by using this method.

The mass concentration and size distribution of aerosols in Tokaimura were investigated using a high-volume and a low-volume Andersen sampler. A difference was found using the two samplers： the concentration of total aerosols determined with the high-volume sampler is smaller than that of the low-volume sampler by 70-90% throughout the year. Compared to the high-volume sampler, low-volume sampler gave lower concentration for aerosols 〉7 μm, higher concentration for aerosols of 3.3-7.0 μm and 〈 1.1 μm, though similar results for aerosols of 1.1-3.3 μm. The low-volume sampler was found to have better separation efficiency and higher accuracy.

AIM: To evaluate the usefulness of three-dimensional computed tomography (3DCT) in laparoscopic surgery for colorectal ***: Seventy-two patients with colorectal cancer who underwent curative operation at our hospital were enrolled in this study. They were classified into two groups by operative procedures. Sixteen patients underwent laparoscopic surgery, laparoscopic group (LG),while 56 patients underwent conventional open surgery,open group (OG). At our institution, contrast-enhanced CT is routinely performed as part of intra-abdominal screening and the 3D images of the major regional vessels are described. We have previously described about the preoperative visualization of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) by 3DCT. This time we newly acquired 3D images of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA)/superior mesenteric vein (SMV), ileocecal artery(ICA), middle colic artery (MCA), and inferior mesenteric vein (IMV). We have compared our two study groups with regard to five items, including clinical anastomotic leakage. We have discussed here the role of 3DCT in laparoscopic surgery for colorectal ***: The mean length of the incision inLG was4.625±0.89 cm, which was significantly shorter than that in OG (P＜0.001). The association between ICA and SMV and SMA was described in the right-sided colectomy. The preoperative imaging of IMA and IMV was created in the rectosigmoidectomy. There was no significant difference in anastomotic leakage between the two groups, but no patients in LG experienced anastomotic ***: Most of the patients are satisfied with the shorter incisional length following laparoscopic surgery. Preoperative visualization of the major regional vessels may be helpful for the secure treatment of the anastomosis in laparoscopic surgery for colorectal carcinoma.
