Functional and structural changes in internal pudendal arteries underlie erectile dysfunction induced by androgen deprivation

Androgen deficiency is strongly associated with erectile dysfunction （ED）. Inadequate penile arterial blood flow is one of the major causes of ED. The blood flow to the corpus cavernosum is mainly derived from the internal pudendal arteries （IPAs）; however, no study has evaluated the effects of androgen deprivation on IPA＇s function. We hypothesized that castration impairs IPAs reactivity and structure, contributing to ED. In our study, Wistar male rats, 8-week-old, were castrated and studied 30 days after orchiectomy. Functional and structural properties of rat IPAs were determined using wire and pressure myograph systems, respectively. Protein expression was determined by Western blot and immunohistochemistry. Plasma testosterone levels were determined using the IMMULITE 1000 Immunoassay System. Castrated rats exhibited impaired erectile function, represented by decreased intracavernosal pressure/mean arterial pressure ratio. IPAs from castrated rats exhibited decreased phenylephrine- and electrical field stimulation （EFS）-induced contraction and decreased acetylcholine- and EFS-induced vasodilatation. IPAs from castrated rats exhibited decreased internal diameter, external diameter, thickness of the arterial wall, and cross-sectional area. Castration decreased nNoS and α-actin expression and increased collagen expression, p38 （Thr180/ryr182） phosphorylation, as well as caspase 3 cleavage. In conclusion, androgen deficiency is associated with impairment of IPA reactivity and structure and increased apoptosis signaling markers. our findings suggest that androgen deficiency-induced vascular dysfunction is an event involving hypotrophic vascular remodeling of IPAs.

Analysis of Technological Developments in the Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease through Patent Documents

Population aging and the consequent change in the profile of the age pyramid are already a reality the world over. one undeniable effect of this aging process is the significant increase in the number of people with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), which is the most common form of dementia, accounting for around 50% - 60% of all cases. AD tends to affect people in their 60 s, becoming progressively more commonplace in older age groups. It is an incurable disease, and patients can live for many years taking medication on a daily basis. This study shows that research into AD is on the rise around the world because the pharmaceutical industry and research institutions are seeking new types of drugs to treat and even cure Alzheimer’s patients. By analyzing patent documents, we map out the potential future treatments for this disease, indicating the leading countries and drugs companies that have invested most in a bid to accelerate progress towards new discoveries about the disease and the development of new drugs.

objective: Identifying in the literature the care technologies used by nurses for people with colorectal neoplasia on Nietzsche’s conceptual perspective. Method: It consists in an integrative review of the literature held in the database: Latin-American Literature and Caribbean in medical health sciences Literature Analysis and Retrieval System online, Database in Nursing, US National Library of Medicine, Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature, Scopus Info Site and Web of Science in December 2015. Results: 28 articles were selected to compose the final sample of this review, which were analyzed and categorized in management technology (86.20%), assistance technology (20.68%) and educational technology (10.34%). Studies published in the last five years have predominated (62.06%), in international territory (82.75%) and with evidence level IV (44.82%). Conclusion: Today the growth on the production about this theme has been highlighted, but there is an important discrepancy between the researches with high and low level of scientific evidence, showing the need of more studies about technologies that strengthen the experience of nursing.

Kriging Geostatistical Methods for Travel Mode Choice: A Spatial Data Analysis to Travel Demand Forecasting

This paper aims to compare the results of two techniques of Kriging (ordinary Kriging and Indicator Kriging) that are applied to estimate the Private Motorized (PM) travel mode use (car or motorcycle) in several geographical coordinates of non-sampled values of the concerning variable. The data used was from the origin/Destination and Public Transportation opinion Survey, carried out in 2007/2008 at S?o Carlos (SP, Brazil). The techniques were applied in the region with 110 sample points (households). Initially, Decision Tree was applied to estimate the probability of mode choice in surveyed households, thus determining the numeric variable to be used in ordinary Kriging. For application of Indicator Kriging it was used the variable “main travel mode” in a discrete manner, where “1” represented the use of PM travel mode and “0” characterized others travel modes. The results obtained by the two spatial estimation techniques were similar (Kriging maps and cross-validation procedure). However, the Indicator Kriging (KI) obtained the highest number of hit rates. In addition, with the KI it was possible to use the variable in its original form, avoiding error propagation. Finally, it was concluded that spatial statistics was thriving in travel demand forecasting issues, giving rise, for the both Kriging methods, to a travel mode choice surface on a confirmatory way.

A dual role of selenium in the growth control of seedlings of Stylosanthes humilis

The growth of seedlings of Townsville sytlo (Stylosanthes humilis H.B.K.) is inhibited by aluminium (Al) ions, their elongation being re-covered with sodium selenate at 1.0 μM. Methyl viologen and hydrogen peroxide, reactive oxy-gen species (RoS)-generating compounds, also inhibited seedling elongation and again growth was relieved by selenate. Selenate, thus, seemed to be operating as a RoS quencher, since N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an antioxidant com-pound, also stimulated largely the growth of Al-inhibited seedlings. At a higher concentra-tion (0.1 mM), however, selenate inhibited seed-ling growth and elongation was recovered by NAC. Ethylene production by selenate plus NAC-treated seedlings was very higher and thus the gaseous hormone was not responsible for the seedling growth inhibition caused by sele-nate. Hence, it seems that at high levels sele-nate operates as a RoS-generating compound whose effects were counteracted by NAC. It can be deduced that, at low concentration, sele-nates behave as a RoS quencher and at high level as a RoS-promoting species.

＜正＞objective Neurons in the cat auditory cortex（AC;Ulanovsky et al.,2003） and in the rat inferior culliculus（IC;Perez-Gonzalez et al.,2005,Malmierca et al.,2009）,show a reduced response to a repeated stimulus（deviant）,and briefly resume firing if a novel stimulus（oddball） is presented,i.e.,they show stimulus-specific adaptation（SSA）.To date,no study demonstrated high levels of SSA in the medial geniculate body（MGB） as those found in the AC and *** that the MGB receives its inputs from both the AC and IC it is unclear why MGB does not exhibit similar levels of SSA. Thus,our main goal is to examine if neurons in the MGB show a similar type of SSA as neurons in the AC and in the IC. Methods We recorded single unit extracellular responses,in the MGB of urethane anaesthetized rats,using a similar stimulation paradigm as the one used in the AC and IC *** included the three main subdivisions of the *** our data demonstrate that a high percentage of neurons in the MGB adapt to the standard stimulus but not to the oddball *** of the neurons in the dorsal and medial subdivisions exhibited extreme levels of SSA,firing almost entirely to the oddball tone,and behaving as surprise *** neurons maintained a high degree of SSA even at very extreme conditions,e.g.,at the combination of a frequency contrast as small as 0.14 octaves and an ISI as long as 2000 *** SSA neurons were mainly onset responders with short latency,but some neurons with tonic and also long latency responses showed high levels of *** We provide evidence for a very rapid and sensitive to the stimuli statistics type of adaptation,that may be mediated by diverse neuronal *** results taken together with those from the AC and the IC,demonstrate the ubiquity of this type of adaptation in neurons from the midbrain level up to the *** hypothesize that SSA may be shaped in a bottom-up process.

Mapping of the Use of Waste as Raw Materials for Biogas Production

Anthropic methane emissions can largely be prevented or minimized using technologies that are already available. one such technology is anaerobic digestion (AD), which is used commercially around the world, especially in Europe and the United States, where some challenging targets have been set to diversify the energy mix with more renewable energy. This foresight study was designed to identify which technological solutions out of the many options available for biogas production are attracting most interest, for which purpose patent documents and scientific publications were analyzed. The aim is to identify which raw materials are most attractive for AD and biogas production. It was found that the raw materials that have attracted most research and patenting activity are sludge, sewage, and wastewater, livestock waste, and agriculture waste, which together account for 62% of all the patents filed and 74% of all the scientific publications. The countries most engaged in producing biogas from AD plants are China, Germany, and the United States. We also identified a rising trend in the use of biogas around the world, and a steady increase in the number of patents filed on the subject, especially in Japan and South Korea. This growth is driven, amongst other things, by strategic governmental actions, global environmental pacts, and the realization on the part of industry that anaerobic digestion can be used as an efficient method for treating waste and effluents.
