In the idyllic medieval village of sernhac situated in the heart of old Provence, in september 2015 Workshop organizers Michael Valenzuela and mirjana maletic-s.vatic brought together scientists around the globe to participate in the third biannual workshop, this time on adult neurogenesis. The workshop covered diverse aspects of neurogenesis, both in animal and human, presented in this special Issue of Frontiers in Biology as a selection of articles that highlight new discoveries and challenges along the way.

In this study, the effects of doping by 3d （V, Mn, Fe, Ni） and 4f （Nd, sm, Er） ions on dielectric and infrared properties of srTiO3 （sTO） single crystals are investigated. It is well known that doping of the srTiO3 can change the dielectric properties of the sTO from an insulator to an n-type semiconductor, and even to a metallic conductor. Dielectric and infrared （IR） properties of the undoped sTO and doped sTO single crystals are analyzed using dielectric spectroscopy （80 kHz-5 MHz）, transmission （200 cm^-1-4000 cm^-1）, and reflection spectroscopy （50 cm^-1-2000 cm^-1）. It is found that doping by the 3d ions reduces the value of dielectric permittivity, but the trend of temperature dependence of the dielectric permittivity remains almost unchanged. On the other hand, dielectric spectroscopy measurements for samples doped by 4f ions show the anomalous behaviors of the dielectric permittivity at temperatures around the temperature of the structural phase transition. There are two fractures of temperature dependences of inverse dielectric permittivity εr^-1 （T）. Transmittance spectroscopy measurements show that there are differences in the shape of the spectrum in the mid-IR region between the undoped sTO and the one doped by 4f ions. The differences in the reflectance spectrum between the sTO：Nd and sTO are analyzed in detail.

Owing to their capacity for self-renewal and pluripotency, stem cells possess untold potential for revolutionizing the field of regenerative medicine through the development of novel therapeutic strategies for treating cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Central to developing these strategies is improving our understanding of biological mechanisms responsible for governing stem cell fate and self-renewal. Increasing attention is being given to the significance of metabolism, through the production of energy and generation of small molecules, as a critical regulator of stem cell functioning. Rapid advances in the field of metabolomics now allow for in-depth profiling of stem cells both in vitro and in vivo, providing a systems perspective on key metabolic and molecular pathways which influence stem cell biology. Understanding the analytical platforms and techniques that are currently used to study stem cell metabolomics, as well as how new insights can be derived from this knowledge, will accelerate new research in the field and improve future efforts to expand our understanding of the interplay between metabolism and stem cell biology.

Defining pathophenotype, a systems level consequence of a disease genotype, together with environmental and stochastic influences, is an arduous task in psychiatry. It is also an appealing goal, given growing need for appreciation of brain disorders biological complexity, aspiration for diagnostic tests development and ambition to identify novel drug targets. Here, we focus on the schizophrenia and Major Depressive Disorder and highlight recent advances in metabolomics research. As a systems biologytool, metabolomics holds a promise to take part in elucidating interactions between genes and environment, in complex behavioral traits and psychopathology risk translational research.
