Sedimentological Studies of Alluvium Deposits along Ngovayang-Bipindi of Lokoundje River,Southwestern Cameroon

In an area of about 305 km2, Seventeen stream sediment samples were taken from alluvium on the banks and floodplain of the Lokoundjé River and its tributaries. Sand samples after being dried in an oven, are subjected to sedimentological analyses in laboratory. Amongst the analysis carried out;the particle size analysis helped to establish a precise textural description of the sediment and to understand the active mechanisms which occur during transport and particle deposition. The morphoscopy of quartz grains consists in determining the mode and duration of transport of the grains, thus allowing reconstructing the geological history of the latter. Heavy minerals are suitable to know the nature of the rock in which they come from and equal to specify their distributing province. The morphometry of pebble makes contributes for a better understanding to apprehension of the agents responsible for the transport of these materials. It appears that the alluvium of the Lokoundjé and its Bipindi tributaries are very fine to coarse. They are well segregated, classified, and homometric. It is the result of the actions of a hydrodynamic turbulent which is sometimes abrupt. From a morphoscopic point of view, using a binocular microscope, grains mainly belong to three categories based on their surface appearance: Grain unworn, the sub-dull and dull shiny. From the morphometric point of view, there is evidence of flattening and dissymmetry of pebbles which are slightly worn to form sub-spherical shapes. With regard to the study of heavy minerals, it has identified two mineralogical processions, which include a metamorphic process with the presence of Sillimanite and Andalusite. In addition, there is the presence of minerals such as green’s Hornblende, Tourmaline, and reflecting magmatic distribution. Anatomy of Eastern Niger Rift Basin with Specific References of Its Petroleum Systems

An attempt is made in this paper to present the dynamics of the Eastern Niger Rift Basin (ENRB) with references to the key features and processes of petroleum systems based on published information. The Eastern Niger Basin is a superimposed rift basin with sedimentary structures emplaced during two rifts episodes. The Cretaceous episode is characterized by large, tilted normally faulted blocks trending NW-SE, that were reactivated in the Paleogene, while the Paleogene episode is characterized by normal faulted blocks that trend NNW-SSE. The rifting resulted in different basin structures with the north section dominated by asymmetric half-grabens while the south section is dominated by full-grabens. Three source rocks each belonging to three different play fairways exist: 1) The Paleogene Sokor-1 Member source belongs to second cycle syn-rift play associated with fluvial/deltaic facies;2) Cretaceous Yogou and Donga sources from first cycle post-rift play associated with alluvial/fluvial/deltaic and marine clastic and carbonate facies;and 3) Cretaceous Yogou source from first cycle transitional play associated with mudstone and shale of transitional facies. The ENRB comprises two source-reservoir-seal assemblages: a lower assemblage of Upper Cretaceous and an Upper assemblage of the Paleogene. Except for the Yogou source which possesses a self-contained petroleum system, the rest of the source rocks release their oils into the Paleogene Sokor-1 Member reservoir sealed regionally by the Oligocene Sokor-2 Member. The Paleogene assemblage is charged from the Upper Cretaceous Yogou Formation through fractures emplaced during the rifting episodes.

Ground gravity survey was recently carried out in the Lolabe-Campo area, which constitutes the southern onshore portion of the Kribi-Campo sub-basin in South Cameroon. The obtained gravity data were processed and interpreted in order to elucidate the subsurface geology of the area in which preliminary studies highlighted the presence of an intrusive igneous body. In order to determine the nature and the characteristics of this body, spectral analysis, ideal body solution and 2.5D modelling methods were applied to the gravity data. The results suggest that the emplacement, breaking up and separation of the intrusive igneous body were the outcome of two tectonic events corresponding to an upward vertical translational tectonic movement followed by an anticlockwise rotational faulting tectonic movement. From a density contrast of 0.13 g·cmǅ, the two isolated bodies have an estimated density of 2.80 g·cmǅ which is comparatively higher than the average density of 2.67 g·cmǅ of the autochthonous rocks. These two blocks are completely surrounded by both sedimentary and metamorphic formations and are confined between the depths of 0.6 km and 3.5 km. The highly dense nature of the rocks and their location around the Atlantic Ocean led to the conclusion that the two intrusive bodies are composed principally of gabbro. The disposition and shape of the open zone resulting from the separation of the blocks are suggestive of a trap for the accumulation of hydrocarbons and mineral resources.

This study is the first of a series of a project on the development and implementation of environmental protection policies, before, during and after the construction of the Kribi Industrial and Urban Port Complex (KIPC). The results will equip the State and scientific structures concerned with the protection of people, water resources and the environment as a whole. This includes reference data on the state of marine pollution in the region dating from the end of realization of the first phase of KIPC known as Kribi Deep-Water Harbor (KDWH). Accordingly, the aim of this work is to assess the current state of KIPC and its surrounding by quantifying the preliminary parameters of suspended matter (SM);to analyze the physical and chemical parameters, chemical pollution indicators for anions and major cations and organic pollution indicators of four water samples taken from four different sites in the project area by filtration and weighing, pH meter, turbid meter, titration, colorimetry and titrimetric methods. Reworked detrital sediments were discovered in the syn-rift to post-rift Cretaceous to Quaternary(Pleistocene)detrital deposits of the Douala coastal sub-basin in the eastern margin of the South Atlantic Ocean at West *** contribution presents the geochemical,mineralogical,and sedimentological data to constrain the origin of these reworked *** investigated samples are characterized by the high values of Plagioclase Index of Alteration(PIA,97.83–99.90),Chemical Index of Alteration(CIA,71.9–99.08),and Chemical Index of Weathering(CIW,98.67–99.90).Data gleaned from these indices suggest that the reworked sediments and their potential source rocks experienced severe *** A-CN-K plot along with the mineralogical indicates a probably post-depositional *** high light rare earth elements(LREE)/heavy rare earth elements(HREE)ratios(15.82–79.13)suggest that the reworked were mainly derived from felsic igneous *** interpretation is further confirmed by the Zr versus TiO2,TiO2/Al2O3,Th/Co versus La/Sc,and La/Th versus Th/Yb plots,which indicate felsic igneous and silicic source ***,the high variability of LREE/HREE ratios(15.82–79.13)and the positive Eu anomalies(1.10–1.32)of studied samples could indicate a little contribution of mafic source *** of the distribution of the heavy minerals(***,aluminum silicate,and rutile)revealed that these felsic and silicic source rocks are mainly granite and gneiss,probably belonging to the Nyong Group and the Western part of the Neoproterozoic Yaounde *** morphoscopic analyses of the host rocks(very angular to angular shapes)have revealed that the reworked sediments have proximal to subproximal onshore origins,probably from former sedimentary deposits,as is indicated by variation of their *** tectonic discriminant diagram indicates the Oceanic Island Arc and Active Continental Margin which are inconsistent with the geological history of the Doual

Computational and experimental study on corrosion inhibition potential of the synergistic 1:1 combination of Arabic and cashew gums on mild steel

The synergistic study of Acacia Senegal (arabic gum) and Anacardium occidentale (cashew gum) combination in corrosion inhibition of mild steel was carried out to determine the inhibition efficiency of their combination. The gums were purified using standard methods and the blend prepared using the method as described by Femi – Oyewo et al. The blend was then used for corrosion study at two temperatures (303 K and 333 K) and the corrosion rates calculated. The adsorption process was found to satisfy the Langmuir isotherm and hence the sorption study reveals that the interaction is a physical one since the free energy of adsorption (ΔG^(o) ads kJ/mol) is given as (−16.47 and −15.61) kJ/mol at temperature T = 303 K and 333K accordingly. The GCMS technique was used to characterize the blend, five chemical compounds and their area percentage [6-O-(1-L-maloyl)-alpha-,beta-D-Glcp (veracylglucan A) (22.11%), 6-Octadecanoic acid (55.76%), Methylhexadecanoate (3.97%), 1-Pentadecane carboxylic acid (10.78%) and 9, 12-Octadecadienoic acid (7.38%)] were identified and subjected to computation corrosion study, the binding energy for the constituents of the blend on Fe surface were computed using Accelrys Material Studio and the mean values were found to be −327.097 kJ/mol, −446.943 kJ/mol, −602.826 kJ/mol, −608.625 kJ/mol and −693.749 kJ/mol respectively.

Efficacy of chlorfenapyr against adult Tribolium castaneum exposed on concrete＂ effects of exposure interval, concentration and the presence of a food source after exposure

Chlorfenapyr, an insecticidal pyrrole, was applied to concrete arenas at concentrations of 1. 1, 0.825, 0.55, and 0.275 g of active ingredient [AI]/m^2. Adult Tribolium castaneum （Herbst）, the red flour beetle, were exposed for 2, 4, or 8 h at each concentration, then removed and held either with or without food （wheat flour） for 7 days. Survival was assessed when the beetles were removed fi＇om the exposure arenas and daily during the post- exposure period. In the presence of food, survival was high regardless of concentration and the day on which post-treatment survival was assessed, but survival did decrease as the exposure period increased from 4 to 8 h. When the beetles were not given food after exposure, survival at each concentration and exposure period declined during the 1-week post- exposure assessments. This pattern of decrease could be described by linear and non-linear equations. Results show the presence of food material greatly compromised effectiveness of the insecticide, and emphasize the importance of cleaning and sanitation in conjunction with insecticide treatments.

Aerosol distribution and efficacy in a commercial food warehouse

A series of field trials were conducted in a commercial food storage facility to evaluate exposure of stored-product insects to aerosol formulations of synergized pyrethrins and the insect growth regulator methoprene. When adults of Tribolium castaneum （Herbst）, the red flour beetle, and Tribolium confusum （Jacqueline DuVal）, the confused flour beetle were exposed with and without a food source to synergized pyrethrin aerosol, there was no difference in adult mortality with respect to availability of food at either 7 or 14 days after exposure （P≥0.05）. However, mortality was lower in T. confusum （40.4% and 79.3% with flour at 7 and 14 days, 38.9% and 84.8% without flour at 7 and 14 days） compared to T. castaneum （96.5% and 99.8% with flour at 7 and 14 days, 91.0% and 98.7% without flour at 7 and 14 days）. Few late-stage larvae and pupae of either species exposed to the pyrethrin aerosol emerged as adults. In tests with methoprene aerosol, adult emergence of exposed 3- and 4-week-old larvae of T. confusum was less than 2%. Only 0.3% of 4-week-old larvae of T. castaneum exposed in open and obstructed areas emerged as adults. Emergence of adults from eggs of Plodia interpunctella （Hubner）, the Indianmeal moth, embedded in culture media and exposed to the methoprene aerosol was 13.2%±3.5%. Results show that the aerosols evaluated in our study could give effective control of some of the major storedproduct insect pests in commercial food storage facilities, and may offer an alternative to fumigation.
