Relationship between multi-scale climate factors and performance of ecological engineering on the Loess Plateau, China

The long-term “Grain-to-Green Program” (GGP) on China’s Loess Plateau is a major global ecological engineering project which has significantly boosted vegetation renewal. Some studies have found that the rate of restoration is quite rapid during the implementation of ecological engineering, however, the influence of multi-scale climatic conditions on the performance of ecological engineering is unclear. In this study, multiple sources of remote sensing data were used to estimate the dynamics of vegetation structural and functional indicators, water-related local climatic factors, and atmospheric circulation factors. These datasets were also used to detect possible causes for vegetation restoration on the Loess Plateau over the past 20 years. The results show that widespread increases in rates of normalized difference vegetation indexes (NDVI), leaf area indexes (LAI), gross primary production (GPP), and aboveground biomass carbon (ABC) during 2000–2016 were significantly higher than before 2000. GPP was significantly correlated with rainfall and surface runoff on a monthly scale, and there were significant positive correlations between GPP and atmospheric circulation. Our results demonstrate that both vegetation structural and functional indicators rapidly increase, and ecological engineering greatly accelerated vegetation restoration after 2000. Local climatic conditions and atmospheric circulation patterns enhance vegetation growth and impact of ecological engineering.

To the Editor:As of January 27,2022,there were 363,062,293 cases and 5,645,884deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic1.The prevalent mutated strains have aggravated the global pandemic2.SARS-Co V-2 is highly mutable,and the mutations on the spike(S)protein resulted in a high transmission of COVID-19 and vaccine breakthrough infection3.For example,there is a notable decrease in neutralizing ability of BNT162b2 vaccination-elicited antibodies against the Delta and other variants4,5,and attenuation of peak viral burden and vaccine effectiveness are reduced with Delta variant6.

The spread of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)throughout the world has resulted in stressful healthcare burdens and global health crises.Developing an effective measure to protect people from infection is an urgent need.The blockage of interaction between angiotensin-converting enzyme 2(ACE2)and S protein is considered an essential target for anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-Co V-2)drugs.A full-length ACE2 protein could be a potential drug to block early entry of SARS-Co V-2 into host cells.In this study,a therapeutic strategy was developed by using extracellular vesicles(EVs)with decoy receptor ACE2 for neutralization of SARS-Co V-2.The EVs embedded with engineered ACE2(EVs-ACE2)were prepared;the EVs-ACE2 were derived from an engineered cell line with stable ACE2 expression.The potential effect of the EVs-ACE2 on anti-SARS-Co V-2 was demonstrated by both in vitro and in vivo neutralization experiments using the pseudovirus with the S protein(S-pseudovirus).EVs-ACE2 can inhibit the infection of S-pseudovirus in various cells,and importantly,the mice treated with intranasal administration of EVs-ACE2 can suppress the entry of S-pseudovirus into the mucosal epithelium.Therefore,the intranasal EVs-ACE2 could be a preventive medicine to protect from SARS-Co V-2 infection.This EVs-based strategy offers a potential route to COVID-19 drug development.

There is a close connection between epigenetic regulation,cancer metabolism,and immunology.The combination of epigenetic therapy and immunotherapy provides a promising avenue for cancer management.As an epigenetic regulator of histone acetylation,panobinostat can induce histone acetylation and inhibit tumor cell proliferation,as well as regulate aerobic glycolysis and reprogram intratumoral immune cells.JQ1 is a BRD4 inhibitor that can suppress PD-L1 expression.Herein,we proposed a chemo-free,epigenetic-based combination therapy of panobinostat/JQ1 for metastatic colorectal cancer.A novel targeted binary-drug liposome was developed based on lactoferrin-mediated binding with the LRP-1 receptor.It was found that the tumor-targeted delivery was further enhanced by in situ formation of albumin corona.The lactoferrin modification and endogenous albumin adsorption contribute a dual-targeting effect on the receptors of both LRP-1 and SPARC that were overexpressed in tumor cells and immune cells(e.g.,tumor-associated macrophages).The targeted liposomal therapy was effective to suppress the crosstalk between tumor metabolism and immune evasion via glycolysis inhibition and immune normalization.Consequently,lactic acid production was reduced and angiogenesis inhibited;TAM switched to an anti-tumor phenotype,and the anti-tumor function of the effector CD8+T cells was reinforced.The strategy provides a potential method for remodeling the tumor immune microenvironment(TIME).

Application of Algorithm CARDBK in Document Clustering

In the K-means clustering algorithm, each data point is uniquely placed into one category. The clustering quality is heavily dependent on the initial cluster centroid. Different initializations can yield varied results; local adjustment cannot save the clustering result from poor local optima. If there is an anomaly in a cluster, it will seriously affect the cluster mean value. The K-means clustering algorithm is only suitable for clusters with convex shapes. We therefore propose a novel clustering algorithm CARDBK—＂centroid all rank distance（CARD）＂ which means that all centroids are sorted by distance value from one point and ＂BK＂ are the initials of ＂batch K-means＂—in which one point not only modifies a cluster centroid nearest to this point but also modifies multiple clusters centroids adjacent to this point, and the degree of influence of a point on a cluster centroid depends on the distance value between this point and the other nearer cluster centroids. Experimental results showed that our CARDBK algorithm outperformed other algorithms when tested on a number of different data sets based on the following performance indexes： entropy, purity, F1 value, Rand index and normalized mutual information（NMI）. Our algorithm manifested to be more stable, linearly scalable and faster.

The efficiency and toxicity of dodecafluoro-2-methylpentan-3-one in suppressing lithium-ion battery fire

Currently,the effective and clean suppression of lithium-ion battery(LIB)fires remains a challenge.The present work investigates the use of various inhibitor doses(Xin)of dodecafluoro-2-methylpentan-3-one(C_(6) F_(12)O)in 300 Ah LIBs,and systematically examines the thermal and toxic hazards of the extinguished batteries via real scale combustion and gas analysis.The inhibitor is shown to be completely effective.The inhibition mechanism involves a combination of chemical inhibition and physical cooling.While the chemical inhibition effect tends to saturate with increasing Xin,the physical cooling remains effective at higher inhibitor doses.However,extinguishing the battery fire with a high Xin of C_(6)F_(12)O is found to incur serious toxicity problems.These results are expected to provide a guideline for the design of inhibitor doses for the suppression of LIB fires.

103 GHz germanium-on-silicon photodiode enabled by an optimized U-shaped electrode

High-performance germanium photodiodes are crucial components in silicon photonic integrated circuits for large-capacity data communication.However,the bandwidths of most germanium photodiodes are limited by the intractable resistance–capacitance parasitic effect.Here,we introduce a unique U-shaped electrode to alleviate this issue,reducing the parasitic effect by 36%without compromising any other performance.Experimentally,a large bandwidth of 103 GHz,an optical responsivity of 0.95 A/W at 1550 nm,and a dark current as low as 1.3 nA are achieved,leading to a record high specific detectivity.This is the first breakthrough to 100 GHz bandwidth among all vertical germanium photodiodes,to the best of our knowledge.Open eye diagrams of 120 Gb/s on-off keying and 200 Gb/s four-level pulse amplitude signals are well received.This work provides a promising solution for chip-based ultra-fast photodetection.

Fuzzy impedance control of an electro-hydraulic actuator with an extended disturbance observer

In this paper,we deal with both velocity control and force control of a single-rod electro-hydraulic actuator subject to external disturbances and parameter uncertainties.In some implementations,both velocity control and force control are required.Impedance control and an extended disturbance observer are combined to solve this issue.Impedance control is applied to regulate the dynamic relationship between the velocity and output force of the actuator,which can help avoid impact and keep a proper contact force on the environment or workpieces.Parameters of impedance rules are regulated by a fuzzy algorithm.An extended disturbance observer is employed to account for external disturbances and parameter uncertainties to achieve an accurate velocity tracking.A detailed model of load force dynamics is presented for the development of the extended disturbance observer.The stability of the whole system is analyzed.Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed control strategy has not only a high velocity tracking performance,but also a good force adjustment performance,and that it should be widely applied in construction and assembly.

COVID-19,the Pandemic of the Century and Its Impact on Cardiovascular Diseases

COVID-19 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)infection likely ranks among the deadliest diseases in human history.As with other coronaviruses,SARS-CoV-2 infection damages not only the lungs but also the heart and many other organs that express angiotensin-converting enzyme 2(ACE2),a receptor for SARS-CoV-2.COVID-19 has upended lives worldwide.Dietary behaviors have been altered such that they favor metabolic and cardiovascular complications,while patients have avoided hospital visits because of limited resources and the fear of infection,thereby increasing out-hospital mortality due to delayed diagnosis and treatment.Clinical observations show that sex,age,and race all influence the risk for SARS-CoV-2 infection,as do hypertension,obesity,and pre-existing cardiovascular conditions.Many hospitalized COVID-19 patients suffer cardiac injury,acute coronary syndromes,or cardiac arrhythmia.SARS-CoV-2 infection may lead to cardiomyocyte apoptosis and necrosis,endothelial cell damage and dysfunction,oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species production,vasoconstriction,fibrotic and thrombotic protein expression,vascular permeability and microvascular dysfunction,heart inflammatory cell accumulation and activation,and a cytokine storm.Current data indicate that COVID-19 patients with cardiovascular diseases should not discontinue many existing cardiovascular therapies such as ACE inhibitors,angiotensin receptor blockers,steroids,aspirin,statins,and PCSK9 inhibitors.This review aims to furnish a framework relating to COVID-19 and cardiovascular pathophysiology.
