Modifiable factors mediating the effects of educational attainment on gestational diabetes mellitus: A two-step Mendelian randomization study

BACKGROUND Although there is currently a wealth of evidence to indicate that maternal educational attainment is associated with gestational diabetes mellitus(GDM),the specific modifiable risk factors that mediate the causal relationship between these two variables have yet to be *** To identify the specific modifiable risk factors that mediate the causal relationship between the level of maternal education and *** Mendelian randomization(MR)was conducted using data from genome-wide association studies of European *** initially performed a two-sample MR analysis using data on genetic variants associated with the duration of education as instruments,and subsequently adopted a two-step MR approach using metabolic and lifestyle factors as mediators to examine the mechanisms underlying the relationship between the level of maternal education and risk of developing *** addition,we calculated the proportions of total causal effects mediated by identified metabolic and lifestyle *** A genetically predicted higher educational attainment was found to be associated with a lower risk of developing GDM(OR:0.71,95%CI:0.60-0.84).Among the metabolic factors assessed,four emerged as potential mediators of the education-GDM association,which,ranked by mediated proportions,were as follows:Waist-to-hip-ratio(31.56%,95%CI:12.38%-50.70%),body mass index(19.20%,95%CI:12.03%-26.42%),high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(12.81%,95%CI:8.65%-17.05%),and apolipoprotein A-1(7.70%,95%CI:4.32%-11.05%).These findings proved to be robust to sensitivity *** Our findings indicate a causal relationship between lower levels of maternal education and the risk of developing GDM can be partly explained by adverse metabolic profiles.

Constructing hetero-structured catalyst is promising but still challenging to achieve overall water splitting for hydrogen production with high ***,we developed a sulfide-based MoS_(2)/Co_(l-x)S@C hetero-structure for highly efficient electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)and oxygen evolution reaction(OER).The carbon derived from the filter paper acts as a conducting carrier to ensure adequate exposure of the active sites guaranteed with improved catalytic *** unique hierarchical nano-sheets facilitate the charge and ion transfer by shortening the diffusion path during ***,the robust hetero-interfaces in MoS_(2)/Co_(1-x)S@C can expose rich electrochemical active sites and facilitate the charge transfer,which further cooperates synergistically toward electro-catalytic ***,the optimal MoS_(2)/Co_(1-x)S@C hetero-structures present small over-potentials toward HER(135 mV@10 ma·cm^(-2))and OER(230 mV@10 ma·cm^(-2)).The MoS_(2)/Co_(1-x)S@C electrolyzer requires an ultralow voltage of 1.6 V at the current density of 10 ma·cm^(-2)with excellent durability,outperforming the state-of-the-art *** work sheds light on the design of the hetero-structured catalysts with interfacial engineering toward large-scale water splitting.

Analysis of residual stress distribution along interface asperity of thermal barrier coating system on macro curved surface

Based on the study of the radial residual stress distribution on the macro curved interfaces of thermal barrier coating system(TBCs) for the hollow curved substrate structures,the hollow four-concentric-circle model was *** the concentric-circle model with a fine scaled sinusoidal interface was proposed to describe the stresses distribution on the rough interface of TBCs with macro curved *** influences of the geometric and thermophysical parameters were discussed by the developed *** results showed that the radial stress on the rough interface can be separated into two sections:the overall level stress from macro surface curvature and the local stress from local asperity of the *** overall level stress was determined by the thicknesses and the thermophysical parameters of each *** has been found that the ratio of local stress and overall level stress was influenced by the interface asperity,the ratio of elastic modulus and the ratio of thermal expansion coefficients of the layers beside the rough ***,the convex macro curvature of the substrate can induce tensile stress onto the *** at the sharp corners of the substrate,the small curvature radius can cause high stress which should be taken more care about the occurrence of spalling cracking at interface

Potential role of hippocampal neurogenesis in spinal cord injury induced post-trauma depression

It has been reported both in clinic and rodent models that beyond spinal cord injury directly induced symptoms, such as paralysis, neuropathic pain, bladder/bowel dysfunction, and loss of sexual function, there are a variety of secondary complications, including memory loss, cognitive decline, depression, and Alzheimer's disease. The largescale longitudinal population-based studies indicate that post-trauma depression is highly prevalent in spinal cord injury patients. Yet, few basic studies have been conducted to address the potential molecular mechanisms. One of possible factors underlying the depression is the reduction of adult hippocampal neurogenesis which may come from less physical activity, social isolation, chronic pain, and elevated neuroinflammation after spinal cord injury. However, there is no clear consensus yet. In this review, we will first summarize the alteration of hippocampal neurogenesis post-spinal cord injury. Then, we will discuss possible mechanisms underlie this important spinal cord injury consequence. Finally, we will outline the potential therapeutic options aimed at enhancing hippocampal neurogenesis to ameliorate depression.

Deciphering and integrating invariants for neural operator learning with various physical mechanisms

Neural operators have been explored as surrogate models for simulating physical systems to overcome the limitations of traditional partial differential equation(PDE) solvers. However, most existing operator learning methods assume that the data originate from a single physical mechanism, limiting their applicability and performance in more realistic scenarios. To this end, we propose the physical invariant attention neural operator(PIANO) to decipher and integrate the physical invariants for operator learning from the PDE series with various physical mechanisms. PIANO employs self-supervised learning to extract physical knowledge and attention mechanisms to integrate them into dynamic convolutional *** to existing techniques, PIANO can reduce the relative error by 13.6%–82.2% on PDE forecasting tasks across varying coefficients, forces or boundary conditions. Additionally, varied downstream tasks reveal that the PI embeddings deciphered by PIANO align well with the underlying invariants in the PDE systems, verifying the physical significance of PIANO.

Persistent greening against drying in northeast Asian semiarid grasslands:Asymmetrical responses of direct and legacy effects to intensified drought

Despite experiencing a decadal shift towards drought conditions at the end of the 2Oth century,semiarid grasslands in northeast Asia(NEA)exhibited an evident greening trend from 1982 to ***,the mechanism behind this phenomenon remains ***,we analysed the interdecadal changes in vegetation response to drought on the basis of the standardised precipitation evapotranspiration index(SPEI)and Global Inventory Modelling and mapping Studies LAI4g datasets,with an emphasis on the differences between direct and legacy effects(as measured by resilience),to explore the mechanism of persistent grassland *** revealed that during the post-drought shift period(2000-2020),the sudden decrease in the water content of the intermediate soil layer triggered an intensified vegetation response to ***,although direct effects and resilience were amplified,they exhibited asymmetric *** was stronger than direct effects,and this difference increased with increasing drought(drought recovery)*** combined effects may account for persistent greening against intensified drying in the semiarid grasslands in *** the projected exacerbation of future droughts,this study holds notable importance for comprehending the long-term change dynamics of dryland ecosystems.

With the rapid development of portable electronics and electric road vehicles,high-energy-density batteries have been becoming front-burner ***,homogeneous electrolyte cannot simultaneously meet diametrically opposed demands of high-potential cathode and low-potential anode,which are essential for high-voltage ***,homogeneous electrolyte is difficult to achieve bi-or multi-functions to meet different requirements of *** comparison,the asymmetric electrolyte with bi-or multi-layer disparate components can satisfy distinct requirements by playing different roles of each electrolyte layer and meanwhile compensates weakness of individual ***,the asymmetric electrolyte can not only suppress by-product sedimentation and continuous electrolyte decomposition at the anode while preserving active substances at the cathode for high-voltage batteries with long cyclic *** this review,we comprehensively divide asymmetric electrolytes into three categories:decoupled liquid-state electrolytes,bi-phase solid/liquid electrolytes and decoupled asymmetric solid-state *** design principles,reaction mechanism and mutual compatibility are also studied,***,we provide a comprehensive vision for the simplification of structure to reduce costs and increase device energy density,and the optimization of solvation structure at anolyte/catholyte interface to realize fast ion transport kinetics.

The shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides(LiPSs)and uncontrollable lithium dendrite growth seriously hinder the practical application of lithium-sulfur(Li-S)*** simultaneously address such issues,monodispersed Nb N quantum dots anchored on nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanorods(NbN@NHCR)are elaborately developed as efficient Li PSs immobilizer and Li stabilizer for high-performance Li-S full *** functional theory(DFT)calculations and experimental characterizations demonstrate that the sulfiphilic and lithiophilic NbN@NHCR hybrid can not only efficiently immobilize the soluble Li PSs and facilitate diffusion-conversion kinetics for alleviating the shuttling effect,but also homogenize the distribution of Li+ions and regulate uniform Li deposition for suppressing Li-dendrite *** a result,the assembled Li-S full batteries(NbN@NHCR-S||Nb N@NHCR-Li)deliver excellent long-term cycling stability with a low decay rate of 0.031%per cycle over 1000 cycles at high rate of 2 *** at a high S loading of 5.8 mg cm^(-2)and a low electrolyte/sulfur ratio of 5.2μL mg^(-1),a large areal capacity of 6.2 ma h cm^(-2)can be achieved in Li-S pouch cell at 0.1 *** study provides a new perspective via designing a dual-functional sulfiphilic and lithiophilic hybrid to address serious issues of the shuttle effect of S cathode and dendrite growth of Li anode.

A two-pronged strategy utilizing exosomes extracted from antigenpresenting cells to combat hepatitis B

Chronic hepatitis B(CHB)is consistently challenging to conquer with numerous complications and *** the effectiveness of antiviral therapies in suppressing hepatitis B virus(HBV)replication,there is an urgent need for novel and more effective treatment *** strategies predominantly emphasize immune activation but still face challenges in sufficiently eliciting T cell *** into account the targeted delivery of nanoparticles to the liver and spleen via intravenous injection,we have proposed a dual-pronged therapeutic strategy based on antigen-presenting cells(APCs)-derived ***,exosomes targeted to the spleen can activate specific immune responses,while those targeted to the liver can modulate or reverse the liver’s immunosuppressive *** immunization,exosome formulations exhibit the remarkable ability to effectively activate APCs,thereby triggering the proliferation of CD8^(+)T ***,they also play an immunoregulatory role by converting M2 macrophages into M1 *** two-pronged therapeutic strategy precisely addresses the issues of T cell dysfunction and immune suppression,both characteristic features of CHB *** combined with Aluminum(Alum)-adjuvanted vaccine,these exosome formulations not only demonstrate a high level of cellular immune response but also secrete specific antibodies comparable to those induced by Alum *** combined approach effectively enhances both cellular and humoral immunity,offering a promising avenue for the development of therapeutic hepatitis B vaccines based on exosome formulations.
