Anatomical and Chemical Alterations but not Photosynthetic Dynamics and Apoplastic Transport Changes are Involved in the Brittleness Culm Mutation of Rice

Brittleness culm is an important agronomic trait that has a potential usefulness in agricultural activity as animal forage although the developmental mechanism is not clear yet. In the present study, the anatomical and chemical characteristics as well as some ecophysiological features in the brittleness culm mutation of rice （Oryza sativa L.） were investigated. Compared with the wild type （WT）, the brittleness culm mutant （bcm） exhibited higher culm vascular bundle distance and lower culm wall thickness, leaf interveinal distance and leaf thickness. Ratio of bundle sheath cell/whole bundle and areas of whole vascular bundles and bundle sheath of leaves were reduced while ratios of xylem and phloem to whole bundles were elevated in bcm. The Fourier transform infrared （FTIR） microspectroscopy analysis and further histochemical and physiological measurements revealed that the different contents and depositions of cell wall components such as pectins, lignin, suberin and cellulose all participated in the mutation of brittleness. However, the mutant presented no significant changes in leaf photosynthetic dynamics and apoplastic transport ability. These results strongly indicate that the alterations in anatomical and chemical characteristics, rather than changes in major ecophysiological features such as photosynthesis and apoplastic transport were involved in the brittleness mutation of rice.

Impact of Cross-Strait Trade Liberalization:A Computable General Equilibrium Analysis

This paper applies a computable general equilibrium model to investigate the potential economic effects of trade liberalization across the Taiwan Strait. Our simulation results reveal that cross-Strait trade liberalization will have significant positive impacts on external trade, domestic investment and real GDP for the economies in this area in general and in Taiwan in particular. Furthermore, the negative impact from the formation of a free trade arrangement between Taiwan and Chinese Mainland on Hong Kong seems to be rather small. These results suggest that cross-Strait trade liberalization is very likely to bring about a win-win situation for the economies in this area.

Drought-Stimulated Activity of Plasma Membrane Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate Oxidase and Its Catalytic Properties in Rice

The activity of plasma membrane （PM） nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate （NADPH） oxidase and its catalytic properties in rice was investigated under drought stress conditions. Drought stress led to decreased leaf relative water content （RWC） and, as a result of drought-induced oxidative stress, the activities of antioxidant enzymes increased significantly. More interestingly, the intensity of applied water stress was correlated with increased production of H2O2 and O2^- and elevated activity of PM NADPH oxidase, a key enzyme of reactive oxygen species generation in plants. Histochemical analyses also revealed increased H2O2 and O2^- production in drought-stressed leaves. Application of diphenylene iodonium （DPI）, an inhibitor of PM NADPH oxidase, did not alleviate drought-induced production of H2O2 and O2^-. Catalysis experiments indicated that the rice PM NADPH oxidase was partially fiavin-dependent. The pH and temperature optima for this enzyme were 9.8 and 40 ℃, respectively. In addition, drought stress enhanced the activity under alkaline pH and high temperature conditions. These results suggest that a complex regulatory mechanism, associated with the NADPH oxidase-H2O2 system, is involved in the response of rice to drought stress.

Cyclophosphamide-induced testosterone deficiency (CPTD) during the treatment of cancers and autoimmune disorders severelyinfluences the quality of life of patients. Currently, several guidelines recommend patients suffering from CPTD receive testosteronereplacement therapy (TRT). However, TRT has many disadvantages underscoring the requirement for alternative, nontoxictreatment strategies. We previously reported bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells-derived exosomes (BMSCs-exos) could alleviatecyclophosphamide (CP)-induced spermatogenesis dysfunction, highlighting their role in the treatment of male reproductive ***, we further investigated whether BMSCs-exos affect autophagy and testosterone synthesis in Leydig cells (LCs). Here,we examined the effects and probed the molecular mechanisms of BMSCs-exos on CPTD in vivo and in vitro by detecting theexpression levels of genes and proteins related to autophagy and testosterone synthesis. Furthermore, the testosterone concentrationin serum and cell-conditioned medium, and the photophosphorylation protein levels of adenosine monophosphate-activatedprotein kinase (AMPK) and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) were measured. Our results suggest that BMSCs-exos couldbe absorbed by LCs through the blood–testis barrier in mice, promoting autophagy in LCs and improving the CP-induced low serumtestosterone levels. BMSCs-exos inhibited cell death in CP-exposed LCs, regulated the AMPK-mTOR signaling pathway to promoteautophagy in LCs, and then improved the low testosterone synthesis ability of CP-induced LCs. Moreover, the autophagy inhibitor,3-methyladenine (3-MA), significantly reversed the therapeutic effects of BMSCs-exos. These findings suggest that BMSCs-exospromote LC autophagy by regulating the AMPK-mTOR signaling pathway, thereby ameliorating CPTD. This study provides novelevidence for the clinical improvement of CPTD using BMSCs-exos.

Cross-Strait Trade Relationship and the Changing Role of Hong Kong

This paper applies a computable general equilibrium model to investigate Hong Kong’s changing role during the evolution of the trade relationship across the Taiwan Strait since the 2000s,by examining several important events during the ***,we estimate the effects of WTO accession for China's Mainland and Taiwan in 2001,the formation of CEPA between China's Mainland and Hong Kong in 2004,as well as the initiation of ECFA between China's Mainland and Taiwan in *** possible impact of a free trade agreement between Taiwan and Hong Kong is also *** simulation results indicate that Hong Kong has benefited significantly from the accession to the WTO by China's Mainland and *** Kong could also gain from regional trade agreements with either China's Mainland or *** for the initiation of ECFA,its negative impact on Hong Kong seems to be negligibly small.

Dear Editor,Pre-harvest sprouting(PHS)is a major challenge to cereal crop production in areas with frequent rainfall at harvest time and has significant effects on grain yield and end-use quality(Lang et al.,2021).PHS is quantified by the dormancy/germination ratio of seeds and is largely regulated by two opposing phytohormones,abscisic acid(ABA)and gibberellin(GA)(Tai et al.,2021).ABA induces dormancy and suppresses PHS,whereas GA exerts the opposite effects(Finkelstein et al.,2008).Because of the complexity of the genome,only a few genes involved in regulation of PHS have been identified in wheat,and the underlying molecular regulatory mechanisms of PHS remain largely unknown in this species.

Accurate methods for identifying pelvic lymph node metastasis(LNM)of prostate cancer(PCa)prior to surgery are still *** aimed to investigate the predictive value of peripheral monocyte count(PMC)for LNM of PCa in this *** hundred and ninety-eight patients from three centers were divided into a training set(n=125)and a validation set(n=173).In the training set,the independent predictors of LNM were analyzed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses,and the optimal cutoff value was calculated by the receiver operating characteristic(ROC)*** sensitivity and specificity of the optimal cutoff were authenticated in the validation ***,a nomogram based on the PMC was constructed for predicting *** analyses of the training cohort demonstrated that clinical T stage,preoperative Gleason score,and PMC were independent risk factors for *** subsequent ROC analysis showed that the optimal cutoff value of PMC for diagnosing LNM was 0.405×10^(9)l^(−1)with a sensitivity of 60.0%and a specificity of 67.8%.In the validation set,the optimal cutoff value showed significantly higher sensitivity than that of conventional magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)(0.619 vs 0.238,P<0.001).The nomogram involving PMC,free prostate-specific antigen(fPSA),clinical T stage,preoperative Gleason score,and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio(MLR)was generated,which showed a robust predictive capacity for predicting LNM before the *** results indicated that PMC as a single agent,or combined with other clinical parameters,showed a robust predictive capacity for LNM in *** can be employed as a complementary factor for the decision of whether to conduct pelvic lymph node dissection.

PM (Plasma membrane) redox system is a electron transfer chain in the plasma membrane. It includeselectron donor oxidases, electron vectors and electron acceptor reductases etc., through which electron istranslocated from donor to its acceptor. Previous studies have indicated that NADH and NADPH of cytoplasmare the natural electron donors, and ferric chelate, ferricyanide, oxygen, ascorbate free radical have beenproposed as the natural electron acceptors. Since 1978, when Novak and Ivankina confirmed that in the leavesof Elodea and Vallisnerin, H extrusion caused by NADH was due to electron transfer from NADH to oxygen,numerous studies have been conducted in the PM redox system of many plants, such as wheat, maize, ***, whether there is redox system in the PM of reed remains unknown.
