GIS-based Evaluation on the Fault Motion-Induced Coseismic Landslides

Earthquake-induced potential landslides are commonly estimated using landslide susceptibility maps. Nevertheless, the fault location is not identified and the ground motion caused by it is unavailable in the map. Thus, potential coseismic landslides for a specific fault motion-induced earthquake could not be predicted using the map. It is meaningful to incorporate the fault location and ground motion characteristics into the landslide predication model. A new method for a specific fault motion-induced coseismic landslide prediction model using GIS （Geographic Information System） is proposed herein. Location of mountain ridges, slope gradients over 45~, PVGA （Peak Vertical Ground Accelerations） exceeded o.15 g, and PHGA （Peak Horizontal Ground Accelerations） exceeded o.25 g of slope units were representing locations that initiated landslides during the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake in Taiwan. These coseismic landslide characteristics were used to identify areas where landslides occurred during Meishan fault motion-induced strong ground motions in Chiayi County in Taiwan. The strong ground motion （over 8 Gal in the database, 1 Gal = 0.0l m/s2, and 1 g = 981 GaD characteristics were evaluated by the fault length, site distance to the fault, and topography, and their attenuation relations are presented in GIS. The results of the analysis show that coseismic landslide areas could be identified promptly using GIS. The earthquake intensity and focus depthhave visible effects on ground motion. The shallower the focus depth, the larger the magnitude increase of the landslides. The GIS-based landslide predication method is valuable combining the geomorphic characteristics and ground motion attenuation relationships for a potential region landslide hazard assessment and in disaster mitigation planning.

Modeling and analysis for material removal and surface roughness in fluid jet polishing of optical glass

luid jet polishing(FJP)is a non-contact polishing technology that can fabricate free-form optical surfaces with sub-micron-level form accuracy and nano-level surface roughness,especially for hard and brittle *** surface generation model of FJP can be used to guide the determination and optimization of process parameters and is of great significance for understanding the evolution mechanism of surface ***,predictive models for the microscopic topography of polished surfaces are still *** study established a macroscopic surface profile model for predicting 3D material removal characteristics and surface texture by combining the 3D computer fluid dynamics(CFD)simulation model and single-particle erosion mechanism.A fractal theory-based erosion model has been built to calculate the material removal caused by the erosion of a single abrasive particle on the rough surface;thus,it predicts the micro-topography and surface roughness of the polished samples.A series of polishing experiments were conducted to analyze the feasibility and accuracy of the model quantitatively and study the influence mechanism of process parameters on the material removal characteristics and surface *** indicated that the models could well predict material removal and surface *** prediction accuracy of the surface roughness Ra and maximum removal depth is better than 91.6%and 90%,*** is also found that the material removal rate of FJP could reach 0.517 mm3/min,and the surface roughness convergence rate could reach 62.9%.

Assessment of Wet Season Precipitation in the Central United States by the Regional Climate Simulation of the WRFG Member in NARCCAP and Its Relationship with Large-Scale Circulation Biases

Assessment of past-climate simulations of regional climate models(RCMs)is important for understanding the reliability of RCMs when used to project future regional ***,we assess the performance and discuss possible causes of biases in a WRF-based RCM with a grid spacing of 50 km,named WRFG,from the North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program(NARCCAP)in simulating wet season precipitation over the Central United States for a period when observational data are *** RCM reproduces key features of the precipitation distribution characteristics during late spring to early summer,although it tends to underestimate the magnitude of *** dry bias is partially due to the model’s lack of skill in simulating nocturnal precipitation related to the lack of eastward propagating convective systems in the *** in reproducing large-scale circulation and environmental conditions is another contributing *** too weak simulated pressure gradient between the Rocky Mountains and the Gulf of Mexico results in weaker southerly winds in between,leading to a reduction of warm moist air transport from the Gulf to the Central Great *** simulated low-level horizontal convergence fields are less favorable for upward motion than in the NARR and hence,for the development of moist convection as ***,a careful examination of an RCM’s deficiencies and the identification of the source of errors are important when using the RCM to project precipitation changes in future climate scenarios.

A Deep Model for Partial Multi-label Image Classification with Curriculum-based Disambiguation

In this paper,we study the partial multi-label(PML)image classification problem,where each image is annotated with a candidate label set consisting of multiple relevant labels and other noisy *** PML methods typically design a disambiguation strategy to filter out noisy labels by utilizing prior knowledge with extra assumptions,which unfortunately is unavailable in many real ***,because the objective function for disambiguation is usually elaborately designed on the whole training set,it can hardly be optimized in a deep model with stochastic gradient descent(SGD)on *** this paper,for the first time,we propose a deep model for PML to enhance the representation and discrimination *** the one hand,we propose a novel curriculum-based disambiguation strategy to progressively identify ground-truth labels by incorporating the varied difficulties of different *** the other hand,consistency regularization is introduced for model training to balance fitting identified easy labels and exploiting potential relevant *** experimental results on the commonly used benchmark datasets show that the proposed method significantlyoutperforms the SOTA methods.

Experimental study of face passive failure features of a shallow shield tunnel in coastal backfill sand

Face passive failure can severely damage existing structures and underground utilities during shallow shield tunneling,especially in coastal backfill *** this work,a series of laboratory model tests were developed and conducted to investigate such failure,for tunnels located at burial depth ratios for which C/D=0.5,0.8,1,and *** pressures,the evolution of failure processes,the failure modes,and the distribution of velocity fields were examined through model tests and numerical *** support pressure in the tests first rose rapidly to the elastic limit and then gradually increased to the maximum value in all *** maximum support pressure decreased slightly in cases where C/D=0.8,1,and 1.3,but the rebound was insignificant where C/D=*** addition,the configuration of the failure mode with C/D=0.5 showed a wedge-shaped arch,which was determined by the outcropping shear *** configuration of failure modes was composed of an arch and the inverted trapezoid when C/D=0.8,1,and 1.3,in which the mode was divided into lower and upper failure zones.

The counterion-mediated hydrogen bonding(CMHB)is related to the hydrogen bonding between bound counterions and polyelectrolyte chains in polyelectrolyte systems,where the counterions can both electrostatically bind to the charged groups of polyelectrolyte chains and act as hydrogen bond donors or acceptors to form hydrogen bonds with the hydrogen bond sites associated with polyelectrolyte chains simultaneously.A large number of literatures illustrate that strong polyelectrolytes(SPs)are insensitive to pH,which severely limmits the applications of SPs as smart ***,our studies have demonstrated that the CMHB makes SPs *** perspective discusses the mechanism of pH responsiveness of SPs and the pH-tunable properties of SPs,based on the pH-controlled CMHB *** future research directions on the pH responsiveness of SPs are also discussed *** is anticipated that the study of the pH responsiveness of SPs not only will provide a new understanding of the fundamental properties of SPs,but also will greatly expand the applications of SPs in the field of smart materials.
