Regulation and function of endoplasmic reticulum autophagy in neurodegenerative diseases

The endoplasmic reticulum,a key cellular organelle,regulates a wide variety of cellular activities.Endoplasmic reticulum autophagy,one of the quality control systems of the endoplasmic reticulum,plays a pivotal role in maintaining endoplasmic reticulum homeostasis by controlling endoplasmic reticulum turnover,remodeling,and proteostasis.In this review,we briefly describe the endoplasmic reticulum quality control system,and subsequently focus on the role of endoplasmic reticulum autophagy,emphasizing the spatial and temporal mechanisms underlying the regulation of endoplasmic reticulum autophagy according to cellular requirements.We also summarize the evidence relating to how defective or abnormal endoplasmic reticulum autophagy contributes to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases.In summary,this review highlights the mechanisms associated with the regulation of endoplasmic reticulum autophagy and how they influence the pathophysiology of degenerative nerve disorders.This review would help researchers to understand the roles and regulatory mechanisms of endoplasmic reticulum-phagy in neurodegenerative disorders.

Unmanned Ship Identification Based on Improved YOLOv8s Algorithm

Aiming at defects such as low contrast in infrared ship images,uneven distribution of ship size,and lack of texture details,which will lead to unmanned ship leakage misdetection and slow detection,this paper proposes an infrared ship detection model based on the improved YOLOv8 algorithm(R_YOLO).The algorithm incorporates the Efficient Multi-Scale Attention mechanism(EMA),the efficient Reparameterized Generalized-feature extraction module(CSPStage),the small target detection header,the Repulsion Loss function,and the context aggregation block(CABlock),which are designed to improve the model’s ability to detect targets at multiple scales and the speed of model inference.The algorithm is validated in detail on two vessel datasets.The comprehensive experimental results demonstrate that,in the infrared dataset,the YOLOv8s algorithm exhibits improvements in various performance metrics.Specifically,compared to the baseline algorithm,there is a 3.1%increase in mean average precision at a threshold of 0.5(mAP(0.5)),a 5.4%increase in recall rate,and a 2.2%increase in mAP(0.5:0.95).Simultaneously,while less than 5 times parameters,the mAP(0.5)and frames per second(FPS)exhibit an increase of 1.7%and more than 3 times,respectively,compared to the CAA_YOLO algorithm.Finally,the evaluation indexes on the visible light data set have shown an average improvement of 4.5%.

Enhanced thermoelectric and mechanical properties of Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 alloy with dispersed yttrium oxide ceramic nanoparticles

Reducing thermal conductivity while avoiding adverse interfacial reactions during sintering is crucial for improving the thermoelectric performance of Bi2Te3-based composites.Inert ceramic nanoparticles are good candidates for achieving this goal.In this study,we designed and prepared a series of p-type Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3nanocomposites decorated with Y2O3ceramic nanoparticles via ball-milling dispersion and spark-plasma sintering.Owing to the chemical stability of the ceramics,no traces of atomic doping or interfacial reactions were observed.Transport measurements revealed that the Y2O3nanoparticles distributed along the grain boundaries acted as energy-dependent carrier-filtering centers to improve the scattering parameter and Seebeck coefficient,contributing to the elevated power factor even with a decreased electrical conductivity.Moreover,the incorporated Y2O3nanoparticles and various defect structures they induced effectively strengthened the phonon scattering and suppressed the lattice thermal conductivity.Consequently,a peak figure of merit（ZT） of 1.23 at 313 K was achieved for 0.4%Y2O3/Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3,which is 13% higher than that of the matrix.In addition,the Vickers hardness of the composite material was 35% higher than that of the matrix.This study demonstrates the effectiveness of ceramic nanoparticles in synergistic ally improving the thermoelectric and mechanical properties,which may be further extended to other thermoelectric systems.

Nano polystyrene microplastics could accumulate in Nile tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus):Negatively impacts on the intestinal and liver health through water exposure

Microplastics(MPs)have become a significant concern for their potential toxicity.However,the correlation between the size of plastic particles and their toxicity remains inconclusive.Here,we investigate the toxic effects of different sizes(80 nm,800 nm,8μm and 80μm)polystyrene MPs(PS-MPs)on the model organism Nile tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus).The results of bioluminescent imaging indicate that the 80 nm PS-MPs are more likely to invade the body.H&E staining shows severe damage on the intestinal villi and distinct hepatic steatosis in the 80 nm group.Ed U labeling shows that the proliferation activity of intestinal and liver cells reduces significantly in the 80 nm group.The gut microbiome analysis shows a severe imbalance of gut microbiota homeostasis in the 80 nm group.The analysis of liver transcriptomics and metabolomics shows that the liver lipid metabolism is disordered in the 80 nm group.In conclusion,this study confirms that the 80 nm PS-MPs are more likely to induce intestinal and liver toxicity.All the above lay the foundation for further study on the pathological damage of MPs to other organisms.

Mutual aid instead of mutual restraint:interactive probing for topological charge and phase of a vortex beam of large aberrations

An imperfect propagation environment or optical system would introduce wavefront aberrations to vortex beams.The phase aberrations and orbital angular momentum in a vortex beam are proved to be mutually restrictive in parameter measurement.Aberrations make traditional topological charge(TC)probing methods ineffective while the phase singularity makes phase retrieval difficult due to the aliasing between the wrapped phase jump and the vortex phase jump.An interactive probing method is proposed to make measurements of the aberrated phase and orbital angular momentum in a vortex beam assist rather than hinder each other.The phase unwrapping is liberated from the phase singularity by an annular shearing interference technique while the TC value is determined by a Moirétechnique immune to aberrations.Simulation and experimental results proving the method effective are presented.It is of great significance to judge the characteristics of vortex beams passing through nonideal environments and optical systems.

Clinical Value of the Quantitative Flow Ratio to Predict Long-term Target Vessel Failure in Patients with In-stent Restenosis after Drug-coated Balloon Angioplasty

Objective The study sought to investigate the clinical predictive value of quantitative flow ratio(QFR)for the long-term target vessel failure(TVF)outcome in patients with in-stent restenosis(ISR)by using drug-coated balloon(DCB)treatment after a long-term follow-up.Methods This was a retrospective study.A total of 186 patients who underwent DCB angioplasty for ISR in two hospitals from March 2014 to September 2019 were enrolled.The QFR of the entire target vessel was measured offline.The primary endpoint was TVF,including target vessel-cardiac death(TV-CD),target vessel-myocardial infarction(TV-MI),and clinically driven-target vessel revascularization(CD-TVR).Results The follow-up time was 3.09±1.53 years,and 50 patients had TVF.The QFR immediately after percutaneous coronary intervention(PCI)was significantly lower in the TVF group than in the no-TVF group.Multivariable Cox regression analysis indicated that the QFR immediately after PCI was an excellent predictor for TVF after the long-term follow-up[hazard ratio(HR):5.15×10−5(6.13×10−8−0.043);P<0.01].Receiver-operating characteristic(ROC)curve analysis demonstrated that the optimal cut-off value of the QFR immediately after PCI for predicting the long-term TVF was 0.925(area under the curve:0.886,95%confidence interval:0.834–0.938;sensitivity:83.40%,specificity:88.00;P<0.01).In addition,QFR≤0.925 post-PCI was strongly correlated with the TVF,including TV-MI and CD-TVR(P<0.01).Conclusion The QFR immediately after PCI showed a high predictive value of TVF after a long-term follow-up in ISR patients who underwent DCB angioplasty.A lower QFR immediately after PCI was associated with a worse TVF outcome.

An improved bound on accelerated light dark matter

Light(sub-GeV)dark matter has gained increasing interest in terms of direct detection.Accelerated dark matter is a promising candidate that can generate detectable nuclear recoil energy within the sub-GeV range.Because of the large kinetic energy,its interactions with the nucleus are predominantly governed by inelastic scattering,including quasi-elastic and deep inelastic scattering.In this work,we calculated the inelastic effects in dark matter-Earth scattering mediated by a vector particle.Our analysis revealed that the impact of inelastic scattering relies on the mediator mass and the kinetic energy spectrum of dark matter.The results exhibited considerable disparity:the upper bounds of the exclusion limit for the spin-independent cross-section between accelerated dark matter and nuclei via a heavy mediator differ by several tens of times when inelastic scattering is considered.

Construction of plum-branch-like CoSe2@N-Doped carbon/carbon fiber with dual protective mechanisms for enhanced lithium storage

Cobalt selenide（CoSe2） emerges as a highly promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries（LIBs） owing to its high theoretical capacity and cost-effectiveness. Despite these merits, its practical utilization faces challenges stemming from substantial volume fluctuations and limited electronic conductivity. To tackle these issues, a plumbranch-like structure of CoSe2@N-doped carbon that embedded in one-dimensional N-doped carbon fibers（CoSe2@NC/CFs）, is successfully synthesized through an in-situ confinement method. Well-defined CoSe2@NC nanoparticles, featuring diameters between 20～30 nm, are uniformly dispersed on both the inner and outer surfaces of the carbon fibers. The distinctive architecture of CoSe2@NC/CFs ensures an increased number of active sites, elevated electronic conductivity, alleviated volume expansion, and accelerated reaction kinetics.Consequently, the CoSe2@NC/CFs exhibits remarkable cycling performance and exceptional rate capability.Operating at a current density of 1000 mA g-1, the CoSe2@NC/CFs anode sustains a capacity of 664 mA h g-1with no obvious capacity decay over 500 cycles. Even at a high current density of 5000 mA g-1, it maintains a capacity of 445 mA h g-1with a mere 0.02 % capacity decay per cycle. This study introduces a novel approach to anode material design, showcasing significant advancements in lithium-ion battery technology.

Development and validation of a machine learning-based early prediction model for massive intraoperative bleeding in patients with primary hepatic malignancies

BACKGROUND Surgical resection remains the primary treatment for hepatic malignancies,and intraoperative bleeding is associated with a significantly increased risk of death.Therefore,accurate prediction of intraoperative bleeding risk in patients with hepatic malignancies is essential to preventing bleeding in advance and providing safer and more effective treatment.AIM To develop a predictive model for intraoperative bleeding in primary hepatic malignancy patients for improving surgical planning and outcomes.METHODS The retrospective analysis enrolled patients diagnosed with primary hepatic malignancies who underwent surgery at the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department of the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University between 2010 and 2020.Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify potential risk factors for intraoperative bleeding.A prediction model was developed using Python programming language,and its accuracy was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve analysis.RESULTS Among 406 primary liver cancer patients,16.0%(65/406)suffered massive intraoperative bleeding.Logistic regression analysis identified four variables as associated with intraoperative bleeding in these patients:ascites[odds ratio(OR):22.839;P<0.05],history of alcohol consumption(OR:2.950;P<0.015),TNM staging(OR:2.441;P<0.001),and albumin-bilirubin score(OR:2.361;P<0.001).These variables were used to construct the prediction model.The 406 patients were randomly assigned to a training set(70%)and a prediction set(30%).The area under the ROC curve values for the model’s ability to predict intraoperative bleeding were 0.844 in the training set and 0.80 in the prediction set.CONCLUSION The developed and validated model predicts significant intraoperative blood loss in primary hepatic malignancies using four preoperative clinical factors by considering four preoperative clinical factors:ascites,history of alcohol consumption,TNM staging,and albumin-bilirubin score.Consequently,this model holds promise for enhancing individ

Boron nitride silicone rubber composite foam with low dielectric and high thermal conductivity

Silicone rubber(SR)is widely used in the field of electronic packaging because of its low dielectric properties.In this work,the porosity of the SR was improved,and the dielectric constant of the SR foam was reduced by adding expanded microspheres(EM).Then,the thermal conductivity of the system was improved by combining the modified boron nitride(f-BN).The results showed that after the f-BN was added,the dielectric constant and dielectric loss were much lower than those of pure SR.Micron-sized modified boron nitride(f-mBN)improved the dielectric and thermal conductivity of the SR foam better than that of nano-sized modified boron nitride(f-nBN),but f-nBN improved the volume resistivity,tensile strength,and thermal stability of the SR better than f-mBN.When the mass ratio of f-mBN and fnBN is 2:1,the thermal conductivity of the SR foam reaches the maximum value of 0.808 W·m^(-1)·K^(-1),which is 6.5 times that before the addition.The heat release rate and fire growth index are the lowest,and the improvement in flame retardancy is mainly attributed to the high thermal stability and physical barrier of f-BN.
