Compacted clay possesses a low water permeability and has been widely used in geo-environmental facilities such as landfill cover *** studies revealed the potential applications of compacted biochar-amended clay(BAC)as an alternative landfill cover ***,the effects of biochar on the soil water retention curves(SWRCs)of clay at low suction are not *** study can help fill this knowledge gap by measuring the wetting and drying SWRCs of clay and BAC(20%biochar).Soils were compacted in instrumented soil columns and subjected to a wetting and drying cycle,and soil water content and suction were measured along with the soil *** was saturated faster when compared with *** drying,the soil water content of clay at 65 mm depth dropped to almost zero,while about 5%of water was retained in *** showed that biochar increased the soil water retention capacity of compacted clay upon *** showed that biochar-clay composite possesses a higher soil water retention capacity at a low soil suction range(<1000 kPa)compared with clay *** revealed the benefits of using compacted biochar-clay composite as a hydraulic barrier to minimize desiccation-induced cracks and potentially promote its serviceability,especially in arid and semi-arid *** composite is also a carbon sink material that can reduce landfill gas emissions and pollutant leaching.

Characterizing the optimal operation of photocatalytic degradation of BDE-209 by nano-sized TiO_2

Brominated flame retardants have been widely used in industry. There is a rapid growing public concern for their availabilities in the environment. Advanced oxidation process （AOP） is a promising and efficient technology which may be used to remove emerging chemicals such as brominated flame retardants. This study aims at investigating optimal operational conditions for the removal of BDE-209 using nano-scaled titanium（IV） oxide. The residual PBDE congeners after photocatalytical degradation of BDE-209 by TiO2 were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry （GC-MS）. It was found that the degradability of BDE-209 by TiO2 was attributed to its photocatalytic activity but not the small size of the particles. The half-life of removing BDE-209 by TiO2 was 3.05 days under visible light. Tetra- and penta-BDEs were the major degraded products of BDE-209. Optimum conditions for photocatalytical degradation of BDE-209 was found to be at pH 12 （93% ± 1%）, 5, 10, 20 mg/L （93.0% ± 1.70%, 91.6% ± 3.21%, 91.9% ± 0.952%, respectively）, respectively of humic acid and in the form of anatase/rutile TiO2 （82% ± 3%）. Hence, the efficiency of removing BDE-209 can be maximized while being cost effective at the said operating conditions.

There has long been a great concern with growing anthropogenic contaminants and their ecological and toxicological effects on living organisms and the surrounding environment for ***,a functional readout of cellular activity,can capture organismal responses to various contaminant-related stressors,acquiring direct signatures to illustrate the environmental behaviours of anthropogenic contaminants *** review entails the application of metabolomics to profile metabolic responses of environmental organisms,***(rodents,fish,crustacean and earthworms)and microorganisms(bacteria,yeast and microalgae)to different anthropogenic contaminants,including heavy metals,nanomaterials,pesticides,pharmaceutical and personal products,persistent organic pollutants,and assesses their ecotoxicological impacts with regard to literature published in the recent five ***-induced metabolism alteration and up/down-regulation of metabolic pathways are revealed in typical *** obtained insights of variations in global metabolism provide a distinct understanding of how anthropogenic contaminants exert influences on specific metabolic pathways on living *** with a novel ecotechnique of environmental metabolomics,risk assessments of anthropogenic contaminants are profoundly demonstrated.

Profiles and removal efficiency of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by two different types of sewage treatment plants in Hong Kong

Sewage discharge could be a major source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） in the coastal waters. Stonecutters Island and Shatin Sewage Treatment Works （SCISTW and STSTW） in Hong Kong, adopted chemically enhanced primary treatment and biological treatment, respectively. This study aimed at （1） determining the removal efficiencies of PAHs, （2） comparing the capabilities in removing PAHs, and （3） characterizing the profile of each individual PAHs, in the two sewage treatment plants （STPs）. Quantification of 16 PAHs was conducted by a Gas Chromatography. The concentrations of total PAHs decreased gradually along the treatment processes （from 301 ± 255 and 307 ± 217 ns/L to 14.9 ± 12.1 and 63.3 ± 54.1 ng/L in STSTW and SCISTW, respectively）. It was noted that STSTW was more capable in removing total PAHs than SCISTW with average total removal effidency 94.4% ± 4.12% us. 79.2% ± 7.48% （p 〈 0.05）. The removal of PAHs was probably due to sorption in particular matter, confirmed by the higher distribution coefficient of individual and total PAHs in solid samples （dewatered sludge contained 92.5% and 74.7% of total PAHs in SCISTW and STSTW, respectively） than liquid samples （final efffluent-total contained 7.53% and 25.3% of total PAHs in STSTW and SCISTW, respectively）. Despite the impressive capability of STSTW and SCISTW in removing PAHs, there was still a considerable amount of total PAHs （1.85 and 39.3 ks/year, respectively for the two STPs） being discharged into Hone Kon coastal waters, which would be an environmental concern.

An Overview of Chemical Constituents, Medicinal Properties, Clinical Trials, and Patents of Twigs of Morus alba(Ramulus Mori)

The rich chemical constituents and diverse pharmacological properties of Ramulus Mori(RM) or the twig of Morus alba with evidence supported by clinical trials and patents are reviewed. Known as Sangzhi in Chinese, RM is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat gout, arthritis, and rheumatism. Chemical constituents include flavonoids, benzofurans, alkaloids, stilbenes, chalcones, phenolic acids, and coumarins. Bioactivities of RM include antidiabetic, anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, antityrosinase, neuroprotective, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, cytoprotective, renoprotective, antihyperuricemic, analgesic, antifungal, DNA protective, anticancer, gastroprotective, cardioprotective, anti-hair aging, anti-arthritic, and antiplatelet aggregation properties. The most active compounds from RM are mulberrin, oxyresveratrol, and mulberroside A. All four clinical trials on RM are focused on the treatment of diabetes. The patents entail using RM extracts as cosmetics for skin whitening and as agents for hypoglycemia. Topics for further research on RM are suggested.

Rice is the staple food for three billion people,most of who reside predominantly in *** has been reported that rice grown in severely As contaminated areas can accumulate up to 0.48 mg kginorganic As in grains,which substantially exceeds the maximum contaminant level for arsenic in rice grains(0.15 mg kg inorganic As,GB2762-2005).The strategy of development for growing rice safely in the presence of As contamination may help to counteract the detrimental effects of *** this study,arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi(AMF)- Rhizophagus intraradices was inoculated to rice to investigate its effects on arsenic(As) uptake,grain As speciation,and rhizospheric As concentration of six rice cultivars grown in As-amended soil(60 mg As kg soil).The AMF inoculation induced either positive,neutral or negative responses in rice grown in As contaminated soil,suggesting that functional diversity may exist in AMF symbiosis when As is taken up and ***,both AMF and rice cultivars had significant effects(P < 0.05) on the following:grain yield;straw and root biomass;concentrations of As(Ⅲ),As(Ⅴ),DMA and total As,and the ratios of inorganic/organic As concentrations in rice grains;and As concentrations in the soil solution of rhizosphere on day 90 and 150;and of non-rhizosphere on day 90,120 and 150 in 60 mg As kg *** ratios of inorganic/organic As concentrations in rice grains of all cultivars were significantly reduced by AMF,that involved the transformation of inorganic As into less toxic organic form dimethylarsinic acid(DMA) in *** decreased significantly total As and inorganic As concentrations in rice grains of Handao *** correlations between As in the rhizospheric soil solution and As in rice grain at different periods were *** inferred that the As survey of soil solution can be an effective measure for evaluating As in grains.

The trasfer risk of cadmium(Cd) accumulated in stems and leafs of fruiting vegetables,which are generally considered to be more suitable to plant on Cd-contaminated farms,is a major issue encountered with the usage of such non-edible *** 8-week pot experiment was conducted to investigate the acquisition and translocation of Cd by cucumber(Cucumis sativus L.) plant on an unsterilized Cd-contaminated(1.6 mg kg) soil in response to inoculating arbuscular mycorrhizal(AM)fungus,Funneliformis caledonium(Fc) or Glomus versiforme(Gv).Compared with the non-inoculated control,both Fc and Gv inoculations significantly increased(P<0.05) root mycorrhizal colonization rates and phosphorus(P) acquisition efficiencies,and total P acquisitions and biomasses of cucumber plants,while only Fc inoculation significantly increased(P<0.05) soil acid phosphatase activity and available P *** Fc and Gv inoculations significantly increased(P<0.05) P translocation factors from root to shoot,inducing significantly higher(P<0.05) shoot P concentrations and shoot/root biomass ratios relative to the *** contrast,both Fc and Gv inoculations significantly decreased(P<0.05) root and shoot Cd concentrations,causing significantly increased(P<0.05) P/Cd concentration ratios in both root and shoot,while only Gv inoculation significantly decreased(P<0.05) root Cd acquisition efficiency and increased(P<0.05) Cd translocation factor from root to *** addition,AM fungal inoculations also tended to decrease soil total and phytoavailable Cd concentrations via elevating plant total Cd acquisitions and soil pH,*** results demonstrated the potential application of AM fungi in the production of low-Cd vegetables,including the non-edible parts,in Cd-contaminated soils.

To the Editor:Extraovarian primary peritoneal carcinoma(EOPPC)is an uncommon malignancy with many similarities to epithelial ovarian carcinoma in histological,clinical,and etiological aspects[1].This phenomenon is explained by their common embryonal origin,in which both develop from the coelomic epithelium in the early embryological *** their similarities,the incidence of EOPPC is significantly lower than that of epithelial ovarian carcinoma(6.78 cases per million vs.120.5 cases per million)[1].

IgG4 Coronary Arteritis Presenting as a Cardiac Pseudo-Tumour

We report on an unusual case presenting with a cardiac pseudo-tumour on echocardiogram, which corresponded to a large soft tissue mural thickening around the mid-right coronary artery. There were similar but not as thick mural lesions around other parts of the coronary arteries. The so-called “pigs-in-a-blanket” sign on computed tomography (CT) scan was pathognomonic of IgG4 coronary arteritis. The IgG4 level was grossly elevated at more than 10 times the upper limit of normal. Positron emission tomography (PET)-CT scans with 18F-fluoro-deoxy-glucose (FDG) and 68Ga-Fibroblast Activation Protein Inhibitor (FAPI) were performed to assess the extent of organ involvement of the IgG4-related disease. The patient was treated with 8 injections of rituximab with good serological response. However, the coronary arteritis findings on CT scan remained unchanged.

Background:Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is associated with impaired renal function,and both diseases often occur alongside other metabolic ***,the prevalence and risk factors for impaired renal function in patients with NAFLD remain *** objective of this study was to identify the prevalence and risk factors for renal impairment in NAFLD ***:All adults aged 18-70 years with ultrasound-diagnosed NAFLD and transient elastography examination from eight Asian centers were enrolled in this prospective *** fibrosis and cirrhosis were assessed by FibroScan-aspartate aminotransferase(FAST),Agile 3+and Agile 4 *** renal function and chronic kidney disease(CKD)were defined by an estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFR)with value of<90 mL/min/1.73 m^(2) and<60 mL/min/1.73 m^(2),respectively,as estimated by the CKD-Epidemiology Collaboration(CKD-EPI)***:Among 529 included NAFLD patients,the prevalence rates of impaired renal function and CKD were 37.4%and 4.9%,*** multivariate analysis,a moderate-high risk of advanced liver fibrosis and cirrhosis according to Agile 3+and Agile 4 scores were independent risk factors for CKD(P<0.05).Furthermore,increased fasting plasma glucose(FPG)and blood pressure were significantly associated with impaired renal function after controlling for the other components of metabolic syndrome(P<0.05).Compared with patients with normoglycemia,those with prediabetes[FPG≥5.6 mmol/L or hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c)≥5.7%]were more likely to have impaired renal function(P<0.05).Conclusions:Agile 3+and Agile 4 are reliable for identifying NAFLD patients with high risk of *** glycemic control in the prediabetic stage might have a potential renoprotective role in these patients.
