Realizing the purification and grain refinement of Mg-Gd-Y alloy by one-step flux refining

In the conventional melt preparation of magnesium rare-earth(Mg-RE)alloys,the repeated heating/cooling process involved in grain refinement and flux refining usually prolongs the preparation period and aggravates melt *** this work,the purification and grain refinement of Mg-9Gd-3Y(GW93)alloy was simultaneously realized by one-step refining at 740℃ by using a self-developed compound *** results show that,only after holding for 10 min,the inclusion content of the alloy is reduced by 81%to 0.2.%,while the grain size is reduced by 84%to 119μm.A physical model depicting the interactions between compound flux and alloy melt was proposed based on thermodynamic calculation and microstructure *** grain refinement mechanism has been analyzed by considering the presence of Zr particle(Zr_(p))and Zr solute(Zr_(s)).In addition,the generated RECl_(3) was found to be readily absorbed by the flux,decreasing the surface tension and promoting the purification efficacy of the flux,which plays an important role in the promoted elongation of the as-cast Mg-9Gd-3Y-0.5Zr(GW93K)*** work presents a unique prospect in simplifying the melt preparation of Mg-RE alloy with a promoted quality.

Additive friction stir deposition(AFSD)is a novel structural repair and manufacturing technology has become a research hotspot at home and abroad in the past five *** this work,the microstructural evolution and mechanical performance of the Al-Mg-Si alloy plate repaired by the preheating-assisted AFSD process were *** evaluate the tool rotation speed and substrate preheating for repair quality,the AFSD technique was used to additively repair 5 mm depth blind holes on 6061 aluminum alloy *** results showed that preheat-assisted AFSD repair significantly improved joint bonding and joint strength compared to the control non-preheat substrate ***,increasing rotation speed was also beneficial to improve the metallurgical bonding of the interface and avoid volume *** preheating conditions,the UTS and elongation were positively correlated with rotation *** the process parameters of preheated substrate and tool rotation speed of 1000 r/min,defect-free specimens could be obtained accompanied by tensile fracture occurring in the substrate rather than the repaired *** UTS and elongation reached the maximum values of 164.2.Pa and 13.4%,which are equivalent to 99.4%and 140%of the heated substrate,respectively.

The elastic adhesive contact of self-affine fractal rough surfaces against a rigid flat is simulated using the finite element method. An array of nonlinear springs, of which the force-separation law obeys the Lennard–Jones potential, is introduced to account for the interfacial adhesion. For fractal rough surfaces, the interfacial interaction is generally attractive for large mean gaps, but turns repulsive as the gap continuously shrinks. The interfacial interactions at the turning point corresponding to the spontaneous contact are shown for various surfaces. For relatively smooth surfaces, the probability density distributions of repulsion and attraction are nearly symmetric. However, for rougher surfaces, the simulation results suggest a uniform distribution for attraction but a monotonously decreasing distribution with a long tail for repulsion. The pull-off force rises with increasing ratio of the work of adhesion to the equilibrium distance, whereas decreases for solids with a higher elastic modulus and a larger surface roughness. The current study will be helpful for understanding the adhesion of various types of rough solids.

The effect of Al content in molten steel on the interaction between SPHC steel(0.005-0.068 wt.%Al,and 19×10^(-4)-58×10^(-4)wt.%O)and MgO-C refractory(11.63 wt.%C)was ***-metallic inclusions in the steel were examined at various periods(0,5,15,30,45,and 60 min)as well as the MgO-C interface after 60 min of corrosion at 1600℃.The results show that when MgO-C refractory comes into contact with SPHC steel,the refractory interface consists of three layers arranged from the innermost to the outermost,including the original refractory layer,the dense MgO layer,and the iron infiltration *** carbon in the MgO-C refractories and the Al content in the molten steel undergo a reaction with the MgO in the refractories,resulting in an increase in Mg concentration in the *** Al content in the molten steel from 0.005 to 0.068 wt.%causes a spinel layer to appear at the interface,and the disappearance time of Al_(2.O_(3) inclusions in the steel decreases from 60 to 30 min,while the average MgO content in inclusions ***,controlling the Al content in the molten steel and the smelting duration can help regulate the formation of spinel inclusionsinthe steel.
