Hazard and risk assessment procedures of different types of rockfall were analyzed to compare their outcomes when they are applied to the same case *** numerous methodologies are available in literature,rockfall hazard and risk analyses are often limited to standard estimations,affected by a margin of uncertainty,especially when relevant engineering projects are about to be *** on the design purpose,different types of approaches can be chosen among the qualitative and quantitative ones available in literature,which allow different levels of *** of the main criticisms related to rockfall events is the risk affecting linear structures,such as road or railways,due both to their strategic relevance for trade and communications and to the great entity of the exposed value(traffic units)traveling along *** this perspective,a comparison between the qualitative method known as Evolving Rockfall Hazard Assessment(EHRA),the semi-quantitative modified Rockfall Hazard Rating System(RHRS)and the quantitative Rockfall Risk Management(RoMa)approach is herein commented according to a practical application to a case *** is the case of the rockfall threat along slopes crossed by a strategic road connecting two of the most known spots of eastern Sicily(Italy),at the Taormina tourist *** were retrieved from both recent literature and technical surveys on *** results highlight how the approaches are affected by a different level of detail and uncertainty,arising also by some necessary assumption that must be taken into account,especially when mitigation measures or territory planning have to be *** results can be also taken into account for similar studies worldwide,in order to choose the most suitable procedure based on the design *** is indeed crucial in the perspective of the optimization of time and economic resources in the territorial planning practice.

With the advent of the patient-centered health care concept, thoracic surgeons of the modern era are called to minimize at most the overall invasiveness of their performances, while increasing safety and effectiveness as much as possible. This need has driven an outstanding development of minimallyinvasive surgical approaches, which are now the standard to perform a broad spectrum of thoracic operations. A recent and fascinating evolution in this field is represented by the increasing interest toward the use of so-called ＂nonintubated＂ anesthesia protocol, which are expected to provide a further improvement in postsurgical outcomes （1-8）.

Lower limb injures are frequently observed in passenger car traffic *** studies of the injuries focus on long bone fractures by using either cadaver component tests or simulations of the long bone kinematics,which lack in-depth study on the fractures in stress *** paper aims to investigate lower limb impact biomechanics in real-world car to pedestrian accidents and to predict fractures of long bones in term of stress parameter for femur,tibia,and *** the above purposes,a 3D finite element(FE) model of human body lower limb(HBM-LL) is developed based on human *** model consists of the pelvis,femur,tibia,fibula,patella,foot bones,primary tendons,knee joint capsule,meniscus,and *** FE model is validated by comparing the results from a lateral impact between simulations and tests with cadaver lower limb *** real-world accidents are selected from an in-depth accident database with detailed information about the accident scene,car impact speed,damage to the car,and pedestrian ***-body system(MBS) models are used to reconstruct the kinematics of the pedestrians in the two accidents and the impact conditions are calculated for initial impact velocity and orientations of the car and pedestrian during the *** FE model is used to perform injury reconstructions and predict the fractures by using physical parameters,such as von Mises stress of long *** calculated failure level of the long bones is correlated with the injury outcomes observed from the two accident *** reconstruction result shows that the HBM-LL FE model has acceptable biofidelity and can be applied to predict the risk of long bone *** study provides an efficient methodology to investigate the long bone fracture suffered from vehicle traffic collisions.

The existing research of steering efficiency mainly focuses on the mechanism efficiency of steering system, aiming at designing and optimizing the mechanism of steering system. In the development of assist steering system especially the evaluation of its comfort, the steering efficiency of driver physiological output usually are not considered, because this physiological output is difficult to measure or to estimate, and the objective evaluation of steering comfort therefore cannot be conducted with movement efficiency perspective. In order to take a further step to the objective evaluation of steering comfort, an estimating method for the steering efficiency of the driver was developed based on the research of the relationship between the steering force and muscle activity. First, the steering forces in the steering wheel plane and the electromyography （EMG） signals of the primary muscles were measured. These primary muscles are the muscles in shoulder and upper ann which mainly produced the steering torque, and their functions in steering maneuver were identified previously. Next, based on the multiple regressions of the steering force and EMG signals, both the effective steering force and the total force capacity of driver in steering maneuver were calculated. Finally, the steering efficiency of driver was estimated by means of the estimated effective force and the total force capacity, which represented the information of driver physiological output of the primary muscles. This research develops a novel estimating method for driver steering efficiency of driver physiological output, including the estimation of both steering force and the force capacity of primary muscles with EMG signals, and will benefit to evaluate the steering comfort with an objective perspective.

Optimization of causative factors using logistic regression and artificial neural network models for landslide susceptibility assessment in Ujung Loe Watershed, South Sulawesi Indonesia

Landslide susceptibility maps(LSMs) play a vital role in assisting land use planning and risk mitigation. This study aims to optimize causative factors using logistic regression(LR) and an artificial neural network(ANN) to produce a LSM. The LSM is produced with 11 causative factors and then optimized using forward-stepwise LR(FSLR), ANN, and their combination(FSLR-ANN) until eight causative factors were found for each method. The ANN method produced superior validation results compared with LR. The ROC values for the training data set ranges between 0.8 and 0.9. On the other hand, validation with the percentage of landslide fall into LSM class high and very high, ANN method was higher(92.59%) than LR(82.12%). FSLR-ANN with nine causative factors gave the best validation results with respect to area under curve(AUC) values, and validation with the percentage of landslide fall into LSM class high and very high. In conclusion, ANN was found to be better than LR when producing LSMs. The best Optimization was combination of FSLR-ANN with nine causative factors and AUC success rate 0.847, predictive rate 0.844 and validation with landslide fall into high and very high class with 91.30%. It is an encouraging preliminary model towards a systematic introduction of FSLR-ANN model for optimization causative factors in landslide susceptibility assessment in the mountainous area of Ujung Loe Watershed.

The 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake was a significant seismic event that caused extensive damage across the region, characterized by a strong shake, subsequent tsunami, fires, liquefaction, and landslides. An emergency survey was conducted by our team from January 6 to January 8, 2024, focusing primarily on the impact of the earthquake on road bridges. This preliminary report includes ground motion records from the most affected areas and their response spectra, providing insights into the earthquake's intensity and characteristics. Among the key findings, substantial damage was reported to the long-span bridges connecting Noto Island to the mainland,specifically the Noto Island Ohashi Bridge and the Naka-Noto Agriculture Bridge(Twin Bridge Noto). These bridges are crucial as they serve as the sole access points to Noto Island. Additionally, the survey recorded damage to several other structures, including the Okogawa Bridges, Ouchigata Bridge, and a collapsed old wooden bridge.
